What exactly do you mean by the "second tone" here? Is this piece in the soft chromatic scale?

@shautora It refers to the Gregorian modes. The second tone is the dorian mode while the first is the Ionian or major.

Things wouldn't have change much 400 or so years ago sitting over the water and gazing in the reflection listening to John Bull echoing over the stillness of the night and calmness on the water.......
