ZED!, Brain! Pulling the focus always looks so fucking nice indeed. However my opinion is that, if you use it so many times it can easily lost its magical power.
I should mention that i adore to pull focus as well in a shot. =)
I know exactly that sort of feeling when you delete a nice shot during editing. But sometimes you should do that.
Man I have adobe premiere and After effects. Did you use After effects to get the colors that way. You guys rock by the way, you can check out my vids, there not near as good but hopefully I will get where you guys are soon
They both have pros and cons. If you don't mind the size, the XL2 is going to give you a better and higher-resolution image, especially for shooting in 16:9.

that's distortion from a wide-angle lens, combined with a vignette (any program can do that).

Well, if you have money we recommend the Sony PMW-Ex1.
If you want just DV not HDv the DVX100 is a good choice, its cheap now.

xl2, or xha1 for high def, which can do also sd, but for a few more you get have the hdv option
