I don't agree on the passport comment. The American currency has become so weak compared to the past decades that they can hardly be put next to the British pound sterling or the euro nowadays.

I mean, I'm Belgian and London for example is like a 100 leeches on my body sucking me dry. If it's expensive for me already I doubt Americans could find it (very) affordable. It's not about the passport, it's about the price.

You are correct, but that is a relatively new development. More than a year ago it was next to nothing to travel to Europe (at least) but in my personal experience with living in the US for 10 years now (and I am from Bulgaria), most US citizens are not even intending on getting a passport. Provided that it takes a single trip to the Post Office to do that - still they hesitate. Just an observation though...
