@hyperboreean while i commend you for not just copying from a wiki page. It seems to depend more on the manufacture as to what they are classified as. The other reason I call it more of a sport touring bike is after sitting on them as compared to my 6r or a 10r it's substantial more upright sitting

Dont try to be a badass man. Get a bike that fits you. I can easily ride a 1000, even a 1300 but I dont for one GREAT reason. I cant handle that kind of power yet. Going out and buying a Busa because of the power is only going to get you hurt or killed, especially if you cant handle that much power.

@SaltLife750 Amen!! I ride an 08 ZX10R. My jacket alone weighs a ton. It is two ply thick leather. I also ride with and RXQ Arai helmet, gloves and boots. I've been down, thank God for the gear. You would really have to be insane to ride a sportbike, let alone a hyperbike without gear.

@SaltLife750 I don't understand why people don't wear gear. It looks cooler that way. The Busa may not be a GP bike, but it is UnGodly fast on the highway. It would be CRAZY not to wear gear on that monster. I agree I love my ZX10R, I'd never get a Busa. R1 is next!!!

@hyperboreean technically it is. it's not considered a super sport, neither is the zx-14 the insurance companies consider them sport touring bikes.

The manufacturers described them as open-class sport motorcycles. By them I mean the Super Blackbird, Busa and ZX-12. The term hyperbike was used to distinguish these machines from earlier fast bikes (ZZ-R1100, GSX-R1100).
With the end of the Speed-Wars a new, less threatening term was needed.
Sport-touring does not adequately describe hyperbikes (see VFR800, FJR, Pan).
FYI
Super-Sport=600cc class
Superbike=1000cc
Cruiser= low&slow crap & different style

@hyperboreean while i commend you for not just copying from a wiki page. It seems to depend more on the manufacture as to what they are classified as. This isn't the first time I've seen this method to classify sport bikes, however in my experience it seems more of a guide line rather than a rule. The other reason I call it more of a sport touring bike is after sitting on them as compared to my 6r or a 10r it's substantial more upright sitting

The classifications aren't mine. To whit, Supersport World Championship and Superbike World Championship (SBK).
Re. the sport-touring nature of the (formerly known as) hyperbikes, I agree. By today's standards they aren't very sporty (i.e., track optimized, race replica-like).
You have to keep in mind though that when the CBR1100XX and GSX1300R appeared ther term sport-bike wasn't far-fetched. IMHO, ZX-12R is an even better example.
