All the free software that Google gives is a strategy to keep users loyal and close to search and ads. Apps is support for search and ads. And if some App becomes profitable by itself, then hey, welcome the extra cash.

The guy downing google spreadsheet obviously doesn't get the concept that having a spreadsheet online (that doesn't require an monopolized OS like Windows) has a huge value do to the fact that people have been looking for a way to get out of the vendor lock-in that Microsoft has on the market.

Google is your friend like everybody says, and it is true they actually are because they actually innovate new things that benefit man instead of the company.
