I never cared much for the gameplay of the games, but the environment and the sound design I always thought was superb. It really set itself apart from the standard sidescroller fair that existed if you ask me.

this whole thing is played without passion. each note is the same. this is especially obvious in the piano. it's literally as though you just opened the midi in fruity loops and assigned each instrument a new sound. makes it very boring.

Friends, you are not alone. Just being in the open water and not concretely knowing what is there scared me, an on almost every Ecco music chart here on Youtube, someone has posted how scary they found Ecco as a kid. It's scary, but in that mysterious manner that you admire it and want to keep playing.

Yes i think alot of people found it a bit scary. although scary aint the right word for it. Eerie/mysterious is better. Being a dolphin, in the sea, with a background of islands, thats somehow a very ' mysterious ' yet scary/eerie setting.....

Also the music helped with that.
