Having recently discovered my heritage to be both Celtic and Basque, I stubbled onto this video of Ferdinand Binnendijk playing this piece so magnificently, that naturally after hearing it, I want to start playing the mandolin as I already play a number of other instruments. So, thank you Ferdinand and thank you Victor Kioulaphides. Bravo! It is absolutely wonderful and you both inspire me. :D
Sounds incredible. I love how that hallway makes it have a slight echo & drifting quality in the sound. It's like the music is telling a story with the tones and wavelengths. Great video & playing & awesome recording quality!!
Graag gedaan. What really matters, however, is the absolutely WONDERFUL way that Ferdinand plays this piece.
Also, in reply to some earlier posts, this, and all my works for unaccompanied mandolin are available as free downloads through my website (accessible through Google, of course)
Yes, for the sake of full disclosure: I am Greek myself, and in fact this piece was composed during a stay at our country home on the Corinthian Gulf; that said, the theme on which I based these variations is in fact Basque, from the Biarritz region.
Marvelous... I wish I'd taken up the mandolin when I was his age. The piece has kind of a 17th century sound to me (but what do I know). Hooray for the Basques, from a distant Celtic cousin!
That was quite amazing. I've been dabbling in mandolin recently, and if anyone can direct me towards the sheet music for that kind of stuff, I'd appreciate it.
Loved this. Someone played me some Basque music to me this morning on the piano but I can't remember the name of the composer. I find the tonality very interesting.
Creates quite a mood. Beautiful music played by a talented young virtuoso. The stark white walls and red brick floor add ambiance. As do the glass window panes and the view of the sculpture outside. For some reason it brings to mind RUssia or someplace in Eastern Europe.
Not a bazukA! A bazukIE! I know this has a mandolin body, but I can not see how many strings. It could have a bazukie stringing. A bazukie has 3 strings, or 6 if the strings are arranged as doubles of the original 3. There are many sises of the bazukie, and many of them look like a mandolin. I' came from the Mediterranean, changed by the Irish, then changed many times over as it traveled to the east.
Indeed, Ferdinand is an AMAZING player! He has fantastic facility, astounding accuracy, and a very "mature" musical sense for such a young musician. His teacher has every reason to be VERY proud of him. I look forward to hearing more of Ferdinand's fine playing in the years to come.
ce morceau n'a aucune influence ni variation provenant de la musique basque mais plutot méditerraneene

Yes, I was joking. I'm sorry. Still: the correct name for the instrument you mean is bOUzouki.
