  • ce morceau n'a aucune influence ni variation provenant de la musique basque mais plutot méditerraneene

  • Beautiful sound young man!

  • sweeet!

  • Having recently discovered my heritage to be both Celtic and Basque, I stubbled onto this video of Ferdinand Binnendijk playing this piece so magnificently, that naturally after hearing it, I want to start playing the mandolin as I already play a number of other instruments. So, thank you Ferdinand and thank you Victor Kioulaphides. Bravo! It is absolutely wonderful and you both inspire me. :D

  • There's no basque region in France but a colony. Freedom!!

  • Het blijft mooi, Jan! Veel groeten, Alex.

  • Check the new link at the end of the description, to see and hear Ferdinand perform recently

  • Sounds incredible. I love how that hallway makes it have a slight echo & drifting quality in the sound. It's like the music is telling a story with the tones and wavelengths. Great video & playing & awesome recording quality!!

  • Euskal Herritik, oso ondo! :)

  • Graag gedaan. What really matters, however, is the absolutely WONDERFUL way that Ferdinand plays this piece.

Also, in reply to some earlier posts, this, and all my works for unaccompanied mandolin are available as free downloads through my website (accessible through Google, of course)

  • @victorkioulaphides

You're absolutely right about Ferdinand and it's really great that you make these works available for free. thanks again.

  • Yes, for the sake of full disclosure: I am Greek myself, and in fact this piece was composed during a stay at our country home on the Corinthian Gulf; that said, the theme on which I based these variations is in fact Basque, from the Biarritz region.

  • @victorkioulaphides

Thanks Victor, for setting us straight about that!

  • this is greek

  • @TheCrypt3 Sorry, although the composer is Greek, he did use a Basque melody to create this.

  • @splog its also celtic

  • @SirNikolausKlaus You're a musicologist?

  • Beautiful

  • very similar to a portuguese guitar and portuguese fado

  • this is amazing!, is there any sheet music or a tab of this online?

  • absolutely beautiful playing Ferdinand. may I ask - are they gut strings?

  • and where do we get the sheet music Victor?! beautiful job.

  • Bravo Ferdinand! Bravo Victor!

  • @eckarteckart

    Vielen Dank, Eckart!

  • This interpretation allies good technique with heart and feeling congratulations from a basque musician.

  • It's a mandolin...jajajaja ;-)

    This kids all right!

    Euskadi

  • What is the name of the instrument he is playing?? Is it a Bazuki (like what the Grecos use??)

    ANYBODY?

  • It's a mandolin. The bouzouki / buzuki is Greek.

  • Hauntingly beautiful

  • bravissimo...Emanuele

  • it`s nice! eskerrik asko to splog!

    -/Sukhumi-Georgia/-

  • Wow I'm Basque, you are amazing.

    Ezkerrik Asko!

  • Marvelous... I wish I'd taken up the mandolin when I was his age. The piece has kind of a 17th century sound to me (but what do I know). Hooray for the Basques, from a distant Celtic cousin!

  • Another Hooray from another distant Celtic cousin! =)

  • @RockyMcPiper I'd say more like brothers ; )

  • Amazing song; amazing talent...

hail the basque people and its culture!

  • That was fantastic!!

  • this is beautiful. i never knew the bask people had such beautiful music

  • This kid is really good. He should feel pleased with himself. I hope he doesn't stop practising :)

  • What a talent. Well done! Amazing!

  • That was quite amazing. I've been dabbling in mandolin recently, and if anyone can direct me towards the sheet music for that kind of stuff, I'd appreciate it.

  • Loved this. Someone played me some Basque music to me this morning on the piano but I can't remember the name of the composer. I find the tonality very interesting.

  • Creates quite a mood. Beautiful music played by a talented young virtuoso. The stark white walls and red brick floor add ambiance. As do the glass window panes and the view of the sculpture outside. For some reason it brings to mind RUssia or someplace in Eastern Europe.

  • he's a master.. a talent wich would back in days have given him much fame ? today its just like oh he can play :/ sad

  • no its not sad. commercialized art is not art: this is Art itself.

  • che piacere

  • whom is this beautiful boy??? he is so beautiful!! and georgeous

  • Does anyone know this song's tittle?

What i like about the child is that he taps into the heart and soul of the basque spirit, when playing.

  • hmm.. i dont know what is the name of the song or what kind of music is it, all i know is that it relaxes me soo much...

  • bravo!!!!! greetings from Moscow.

I'll visit a Basqueland in august

  • bravo!

  • where do i get a mando like that, little brother?

  • very well played, thank you for posting

  • the Basque version. beautiful this probably was played in court

  • cool

  • brilliant!

  • A Bouzouki has 8 strings same as Mandolin, but I think it is tuned differently in Greece...

  • its not bouzouki

  • Great performance and a wonderful set of variations.

  • Wonderful! My roommate makes those musical instruments. Bazukie is it?

  • No a bazuka is a very big gun. This here, my friend, is a mandoline :-)

  • Not a bazukA! A bazukIE! I know this has a mandolin body, but I can not see how many strings. It could have a bazukie stringing. A bazukie has 3 strings, or 6 if the strings are arranged as doubles of the original 3. There are many sises of the bazukie, and many of them look like a mandolin. I' came from the Mediterranean, changed by the Irish, then changed many times over as it traveled to the east.

  • Yes, I was joking. I'm sorry. Still: the correct name for the instrument you mean is bOUzouki.

  • (blush) yeah, I guess I do suck at spelling.

  • That's music! Super.

    Martje

  • BRavo Gratefull!! exelent song and playing! i want this mandoline!!!

  • Wonderful, thanks for sharing mr. splog!

  • Bravo, Ferdinand! Wonderful playing!

    And Victor - that's a terrific piece!

    Mark

  • Indeed, Ferdinand is an AMAZING player! He has fantastic facility, astounding accuracy, and a very "mature" musical sense for such a young musician. His teacher has every reason to be VERY proud of him. I look forward to hearing more of Ferdinand's fine playing in the years to come.

  • Thank you for sharing this.

  • OSO ONA! MUY BUENO! VERY GOOD!

  • Amazing. I wish I had started to play sooner. it is as though this boy was born with a mandolin in his hands. He makes it look so easy. Bravo!

  • Superb playing - a joy to watch
