  • Thank you for watching. I just added another Mabuhay Singers song: "Pa-ilub." Daghang salamat!

  • We were discussin' the lyrics of this song in a Cebuano forum months ago. The song is very haunting, sad, full of melancholy but yet filled with romance...

It seemed to suggest a suitor who lost all faith in life itself and somethin hinted obliquely at suicide, "wa'ay bili ning kinabuhi" life is useless... "sa langit manghayhay" in heaven to hang (around)... hints seem to be all around...

oh boy, but I just love the chorus here... thanks toiletholder! =)

  • It's funny because my mom laughs when she hears the title to this song because it can mean "I will sigh in heaven" or "I will hang (like clothes) in heaven." I'm glad that there are at least a few people around to discuss these songs. I didn't think that anyone knew of these songs apart from Matud Nila. This to me is a much more passionate song than those and there are many more songs like it lost to obscurity. I wonder why the same songs are always at the front of the "best of" Visayan line-up.

  • Yes, the title can be misleading in contemporary usage - laundry. But when one delves into the lyrics, it is nothing but sadness, resignation to loneliness, overall loss of carpe diem, loss of the will to live... manghayhay could also be to "hang around" a neighbourhood like heaven. The only way to do that is "to leave this life", one way or another.

  • The stereotypical songs that everyone hears are Matud Nila, Usahay, Ay Kalisud and Walay Angay. It seems to people who compile "best of..." albums are only aware of these songs. Why, when there are songs like this that are very beautiful but never make it to Filipino awareness of Kundiman? The song "ihilak" popularized by Victor Wood has an older version. Tthe melody is different but the lyrics are the same. I like that version a lot more. It's also on "alimukon" by the Mabuhay Singers.

  • I dunno either. Could it be the packagin for those songs? Yea, could be. Like, one of my fave songs (rare) is "Bisan Ang Kalibutan Magdumili" (Even if the World Forbids). sung by another pal here in utube. Another is "Hain Ang Utlanan".

I noted that Visayans tend to call their classic songs Haranas (or at least the older Cebuanos did). The word harana existed in our language for over a hundred years, methinks.

  • I just recently bought a very good version of Kalibutan Nagdumili by Grace Nono. It has actual guitar arrangements. It's very classy.

  • All rounder pala ang Mabuhay Singers. Thanks for this beautiful song.
