This movie is one of the most clever movies I have ever seen. It is extremely well-written and thought provoking. It is long, but never dull. Every scene is pertinent to the story.

This movie was so one-sided and insulting to intelligent people. James Stewart is actually a perfect example of a stooge lawyer. A simple country lawyer who yells more at the prosecution and the judge just putting up with it.
@robert13camus Agreed. And to add insult to injury the defendant got off for an unnecessary killing. It's every murderer's dream defense: dissociative reaction, temporary reason of insanity and irresistible impulse..I'd say any defense lawyer who uses these lame excuses should be thrown in jail themselves or just stay retired and go fishing as James Stewart in this case... lamest and the most stupid courtroom drama ever..total waste of time!
Great film but the "best"? Perhaps you should see "Judgement at Nuremberg"; "Inherit the Wind"; "Witness for the Prosecution";"To Kill a Mocking Bird" etc etc etc
I've seen them (and much, much more...) and, with all due respect, I stick to my opinion. Why?
Because (among many other things), unlike films such those you point out, "Anatomy of a Murder" is about common facts (a quite vulgar passional crime) and common people (all anonymous citizens, from the murderer to the Judge).
In other words, "Anatomy of a Murder" is about what I, as a lawyer, must deal with every day in my office. Please, don't forget I wrote 'in my opinion as a lawyer'!
In fact, 99,9% of all cases a lawyer must work on in his life are about common facts and common people. And, to my knowlegde, there's nothing harder to put on film with a 'minimum' of quality as such facts and such people...
solid, absorbing, and unlike a lot of courtroom flicks, grimly realistic....which is what makes it a great, great film.....I've felt that way about it since I first saw it in 1982.....and I only realized two years ago that that was the REAL Joseph WELCH portraying the judge...a man of great courage
i love this movie...i don't know if it's because i live in Marquette or not...but it is based on a true murder and i love seeing everywhere that i go to now as it was in the past its like going into a time machine. this movie was expertly crafted and it brought a lot of tourism to the U.P

I agree... although other courtroom drama's address loftier themes, ... this is "real" and really shows how courtroom drama goes down.
Best of all time... absolutely.
