For those interested in finding out more about this incredible musician, I recommend obtaining a copy of a book my father co-authored with Baby Dodds, called "The Baby Dodds Story." It is still in print and available from Amazon.com, among other places.
@lsdvine Hahaha there's cymbals in this. I think you're probably a troll, but if not, just know that you just called nearly every influential drummer of the last century "pussies who can't invent good rhythms." This means John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Benny Greb, Brian Blade, Elvin Jones...so um, yeah...you're clearly wrong.
@funkytomtom Maybe, but they are in the background.....im just provoking drummers because i personally think that cymbals are highly over-used..... please give me a definition of a troll as u use it! And evry influential drummer has lead to the over-use of the drum kit in modern music, wheres the nice drums, sogo, cuica, dumbek etc....
This dude is the inventer of the floor bass or "kick drum". He revolutionized the drum set man. Travis Barker would be banging on pots and pans without Baby Dodds.
@andyamorris Baby Dodds was Krupa's drum hero while he was living in Chicago in the 20's, ever since the drummer Dave Tough took Krupa to see King Oliver's band in 1923, for which Dodds was the drummer! Or so I've read
The Blackwell reference is right on the money!! The spirit of New Orleans on the drums is one continuous heartbeat that has gone on for hundreds of years.
Baby was also a big influence on Art Blakey(As were Chick Webb and Big Sid Catlett)
'If it weren't for Baby Dodds, you would never have heard of Gene Krupa. Baby Dodds taught Gene Krupa, which was why I was so pissed when I went to see the movie The Gene Krupa Story because Baby Dodds was not even mentioned. It was the worst movie ever made.'
This is superb, but I've always felt that it had more to do with the New York avant-garde of the 1940s (which is where & when it was recorded in 1946 by Rudi Blesh) than anything that ever happened in New Orleans. When Baby Dodds was working with Bunk Johnson at the Stuyvesant Casino in NY, Bunk used to get very annoyed if Dodds was ever asked to play a drum solo. It's a wonderful record, nevertheless; thanks for posting it to You Tube.
I had these recordings once on tape, lost them, so good you found them somewhere. These must have been Colin Bowden's first lesson into jazz drumming. great stuff!
Played with no Hi hat, I believe.

This reminds me of a lame joke nobody gets.
An Englishman went on a guided expedition through Africa and day and night for weeks all he heard everywhere he went was drumming.
Constant drumming until it drove him crazy and he finally asked, "Can't you guys hear that drumming, why isn't it bother you?"
That's when one of the African guides said, "At least its not the base solo."

Sheesh...I played the drums for years as a kid
and I think this is full of flair.
Hey who cares who's better.
RAYGUNNE 3 years ago 11
great stuff. chick webb is way better. and krupa just never missed one little beat or chance to add flair, which is why he'll always be king.
of course, i'm from chicago, not new orleans, so that biases me. lol.
