I can only hope my voice not only holds up but improves the way hers has. The voice may no longer have the youthful gleam, but it more than compensates in dramatic impulse and communication of the text. Freni may have been somewhat of the "park and bark" physical acting school, but her voice has more pure acting in it than any younger diva around can muster. Bravo, Mirella. May you thrill us forever!
IT IS A PITY THAT BEING SO WONDERFUL ARTIST WITH SUCH AN AMAZING VOICE AT THIS AGE....SHE NEVER WAS A GOOD ACTRESS.....IN THAT SENSE VERY MUCH LIKE JOAN SUTHERLAND....I PREFER LISTEN TO THEM THAN WATCHING THEM ....!!!!!1111111
Absolutely mesmerizing, the condition of the voice as well as the gripping interpretation.Has anyone noticed that Tchaikovsky, where the French text goes "au champ d'honneur", quotes Chopin's well known "Military Polonaise"? I am sure this is no coincidence, it is no plagiarism, only a beautiful piece of inspiration from a great predecessor.
I admire the woman now more than ever before......her ability at 68 has not diminished....her interpretation and line are all there yet......marvelous!!!
Amazing! Her voice sounds heavier and more aged, but that's only because we know she had that perfectly pristine and bright lyric voice. With such technique and wonderful voice, with a more dramatic sound, she sings just as well as the best younger singers. Brava!
I agree with all of you. She´s simply wonderful. When she teaches she always emphasizes in working with a light sound no matter how dramatic the role is. And adds that it the only way to build up a long career as hers is to work this way.
I think she's not singing anymore and is devoted to teaching but this video shows clearly that she could be still singing at a very high level even not taking on count her age.
What she does at 68, singers in today's world not only can't do, but couldn't do at 28. This is the result of solid technique, specifically avoiding certain roles, and not letting anyone tell her otherwise. She's a model of artistry for all of us.
she's even said to have stood up to Karajan when he was encouraging her to take on heavier roles. her technique is the BEST of her generation, maybe of any. She and Pavarotti shared the same teacher and I think their long careers attest to that solid technical foundation. Not always the best actors, but certainly by far they are marvels to behold. Brava Mirella!
Actually, it was more commonly said (back in the 70s and 80s) that she was ruining her voice by taking on Aida and Elisabetta under his behest. Before now I was inclined to believe that she was singing roles unsuited to her, but this kind of vocal longevity doesn't come from making mistakes. I love and respect her a hundred times more after seeing this video. (And I already thought she was pretty great.)
That would have been magnificent for any soprano in her prime but at 68 its just shocking. She even manages to get into second gear and run a little at the end, God bless this nonina! lol

unforgivable mistake. She´s not just a wonderful artist and singer but also a wonderful person, very humble and down to earth.
