I bought the video and love it. Can't wait to get the chance to make my own leather bound book. My interest is in fishing books with actual fishing flies included in the front cover binding. Bound in leather of course. Wish me luck.
hi janette i really want to buy these dvds as a boxed set im a kiwi living here in nz and dont want to go through amazon? is there an easier way i can purchase these? does whitcoulls stock them? are they ever listed on trademe? thanks for your help looking forward to hearing from you
I have made short videos featuring Peter Goodwin especially for YouTube on Paring Knives, Glue, Paper Repair and the Brittle Book Syndrome which is really the cause of the demise of the trade of bookbinding for you to enjoy! These do not feature in the DVD's.
I was privileged to be able to film Peter. He is the last of his craft as no more will ever be trained.
Thank you so much. It is nice to be appreciated. It is important to have a record of these soon to be lost crafts!
" It is important to have a record of these soon to be lost crafts!"
It certainly is!
If we don't learn from our mistakes, and soon,
we may find ourselves trying to re-invent these skills in the near future, and records such as yours may be as precious as the guarded manuscripts hidden during the Dark Ages!
Imaginefree69: I am unsure how this is treated in other countries but here in the US there are college courses and apprenticeships still widely available. So I would hardly call this a dying art or soon to be lost craft. As for trying to reinvent it, you do realize that the art of bookbinding is well recorded in ....a......books >:)
Is it possible if anyone could upload instructions on how to apply a hollow on the backing of the book before it is covered in leather, please? I would appreciate it.
It is almost impossible to learn booking from a book. I tried for years unsuccessfully
and then I met Peter Goodwin. I knew immediately I had to film him for posterity. Hollows are tricky as no spine has the same dimensions. Each has to be made to fit individually. The best DVD demonstration of this is in 'Restoring the Family Bible' where I have filmed it in detail. It is quite complicated. I have been so privileged to learn from a master bookbinder but I can share my good fortune with you.
If only he would take a 14 yr old girl in as his apprentice... I'm afraid he would get tired of my ramblings of magic and sorcery...

Very difficult to learn how to bind books from a book. I tried as there were no courses where I lived hence the DVD series!
I challenge you to make a springback ledger using a book. A master binder can do this in 3 hours start to finish.
Still it is encouraging to learn that the USA has professional bookbinding courses taught by master craftsman still available.
Would it were so in the rest of the world.

Beautiful.
Well done, Janette!
I would like to have seen a bit more of Peter's skills.
I do realize that this is more or less an advertisement,
but a few more shots of the various processes
would be engaging AND an added inducement to buy the DVD..
I don't mean to crab your work, however-
this is a lovely video.
I'm just greedy for more!

I will definitely peruse your other videos.
Thanks again.
