I think if your spear would have been dry wood and had a stone point lol and real fleching it might have done a little better but i think its awsome that you made all of it with a stone tool i had fun watching ps. Sorry you had to die at the end
you know back in the huntin' days, those atlatls were the 50.cals of the arrow family. A well made one with the right woods could punch through a car door. Ive seen it.
@WisdomOfTheHeart123 check out the atlatl forum on paleoplanet. I dont know a whole bunch about atlatls. Ask on there. Im sure someone wil have an answer to your question. I would think it would help.
@5tonyvvvv Thanks. It was just a quicky atlatl and video. It would be interesting to try it with a point on it. Im not very atlatl savy so I have a lot to learn still. I do know the ancients used atlatls in the high desert of Oregon. They have found atlatl weights and larger points with the large post -ice age animals that used to live there.
Sorry might not be on the right person ...I taught Ive seen you on paleoplanet I remember seeing your young boy diggin some pretty hefty holes ...sorry if I have the wrong person ...still real cool vid thanks for sharing
@brutallindigo Yup. That would be me. The pithouse is put on hold for now. The reality of finding enough cedar planks makes it pretty unreachable of a goal. I still would like to finish it and side it with some sheet metal. Not very primitive but at this point, Im afraid that is what will have to happen.
@gotrocksinhead Ahh! too bad I would with the metal sheets why not (use what ya got ) ...Its nice too see you out and about with your kids ....you seem to be an awesome dad . ;-)
@brutallindigo We probably will use the metal sheets eventually. We got pretty burned out in the digging process. Thats a LOT of dirt to move and we have had nonstop rain. Id still like to use cedar as I find it here and there. Mabey just slowly replace the metal as I can.
For straightening the dart, can u use steam?
zekeyo37 3 months ago
@zekeyo37 Just heat or steam if you think the wood might split or crack.

Does anyone know if it helps to spiral the fletching. As this is done with normal arrows to impart spin and enhance accuracy?

Cool video, that's a nice bushcraft atlatl and dart! Got to try that type of fletching.

@southtexasatlatl Thank you. The fletching worked pretty good but I have some other ideas on hopefully better ways to fletch it.
