i dont find this impressive at all. cliff burton listed geddy as an influence but he could slay geddy when it comes to bass and hes been dead for 25 years. flame me i fucking dare yas
@lisaandarron Cliff Burton better than Geddy? Please. Cliff couldn't even do a decent solo without adding some cheesy effect to make him sound like he was doing something "special".
you obviously know fuck all about bass if you think cliff used effects to get his sound. he used a wah pedal and a distortion pedal. cliff burton rules all!
@lisaandarron LOL... You're opinion is obviously obscured by Metallica-colored glasses. Nothing wrong with that, every band needs it's loyal following. As for me? I have been playing the bass guitar for nearly 30 years and have had to learn more songs than I care to remember. I would venture to say that I could learn an entire Burton-era Metallica song in the time that it would take me to learn an average Rush song. And yes, wah and distortion pedals are, by definition, effects.
@lisaandarron LOL, you remind me of my cousin who was an avid AC/DC fan. He tried to convince me that Phil Rudd was the best drummer in the world. Sure, give me Lemmy's email address and I'll tell him that distortion on a bass guitar is cheesy.
as I said...not slapping the way it is "understood" neither plucking....as you can hear there are some little slaps he does with his left hand as he frets the notes as he describes "attacks" the bass with his right hand hard plucking/pulling/ hammering....one of a kind this Geddo!
@2MrTwoCents2 Sure The Ox came first ( Rotosunds, Trebly tone, Tapping technique)...the Geddman is a kind of mixture between Ox, Bruce and Squire mostly...all blended and then came with his own thing...I like him more than the other 3 separatelly....for some reason his musicality/tone/ghostly notes on da Bass Guitar turns me on deeper than the other gentleman...great players on their own , but for me the Geddo is da Man!!...Have a happy 2012 and we will see what the Clockwork Angels brings on!!
pnadolski0216 you are fucking awesome, thats the way i feel about rush too. fuck those 4 dislikes there just jealous they cant do nothing like that. thats weird why did four cock suckers view this, they probly listen to techno, like fags they are.
he often uses the finger-picking technique with a very aggressive touch. In the 80' with his wal he became to play some parts of his basslines with the popping technique.the bass solo at the begining of the song 'The electric body' is an example..
@SgtZaqq that's because geddy was originally a guitarist. he tired buying his first guitar of Alex, and this is how the band started. since was initially a guitarist, and slapping is not a guitar technique, he probably never learned to slap.
@SnowyCamel so why he isn't playing with a pick? Geddy style finger plucking is not a guitar technique too. And of course the real reason why Geddy doesn't slap is the fact rock bassists usually don't use slapping.
@SgtZaqq sorry, perhaps i didn't make myself clear enough. when i say that he started of as a guitarist i meant a CLASSICAL guitarist (like me). classical guitarists hardly ever use picks. this is probably why Geddy doesn't. hope this makes my earlier comment clearer.
@SgtZaqq I'm really glad he's never gotten into the whole slapping thing. It's so overdone nowadays that it's almost comical. Geddy's hard plucking style gives him a really unique sound anyway.
I saw Rush during the UK tour, front row at Sheffield arena! This solo made me get goosebumps! Exchanging eye contact and smiles with Geddy throughout the entire set, greatest night of my life, the show was spectacular!!!
What the hell is going on in the background??? I saw them do this live in Hershey and I still don't understand what the hell is goin' on. Something about hammers bobbing their heads ???????
@MXyosniz Actually the definition of solo is singular play. Three instruments playing at full volume do not a solo make. What is going on in this video is the JAM, which is an extended jazz like section.
i've never witnessed him cut loose like that! he gave quebec a treat. i mean i've seen little flish flashes here and there over the years, and only on the internet and definitley nothing recent. he's never done that for houston.
All this talk of who the best bassplayer is. Stupid. It's all subjective. But I can tell you one thing for a fact: Geddy is MY favorite bassist, no matter what the rest of you think. Entwhistle, Flea, Jaco, Squire, JPJ, all good, but I'd rather see and hear Geddy play, thank you very much. (Also, MarloweDK has to be on that list LOL)
he's great at Bass but I like Les Claypool better mainly because of the style of music but I'm sure Geddy lee is better since Claypool was idolized by him
@bassmachine666 Actually I think John Enwhistle was the best bass player in Rock history, but Geddy is the best living bass player and a close second to Entwhistle.
That thumbs down rating MUST be an abberation...Some infinitesimal glitch in the tubes of the internet....Or, is there really some lone jack-off out there who just can't grasp and appreciate musicality on a complex level ?? I respect and accept a difference of opinion, but I'm sorry - thumbing this down is an automatic FAIL...
@DaemonicNimrod Or it can be someone making a mistake. It happens from time to time, you know.
I still don't know why Youtube didn't add a confirmation window on the dislike button. A pop-up like "Do you want to dislike this video?" shouldn't be that difficult to implement.
Sure. Someone making a mistake. Happens from time to time. "Oooops..Damn!! I meant to hit the button marked thumbs up, but I made a mistake"......Yes, I'm sure that's what happened in this case. Unintended human error. The person who mistakenly thumbed this down also mistakenly overlooked the word "Like" too.
I think the title of this song came when they wrote the instrumentals, then geddy said "Neil, dont you have lyrics for me?" and neil said "nah, just leave that thing alone."
This is a great vid, man, thanks for capturing this. Love watching Geddy play the bass, he could go on like that for a half hour and I'd never get tired of hearing it.
Rush is my favorite band but as much as I like Geddy's bass solo here I think even he would be the first to tell us all he is no match when compared to John Entwistle. See for yourselves, check out Entwistle's bass solo. Wow! Drums: Peart! No argument. Guitar, I think even Clapton said he was no match for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Many greats there as well. It's sorta like trying to split hairs. God bless.
he can play guitar with the bass, he can play drums with the bass, he can sing with the bass, he knew how to play bass before learning how to play bass.
My faviroute bassist of all time. i have a huge respect for basists from jaco to flea and all inbetween like wooton, hamm, sting, turner, claypool and every other bassist on the planet from me to you but i find geddy's bass lines are amazing and fresh
Put this on a loop and play that in my mind for the rest of my life. His faces crack me up. I love all three of them to death but there's no doubt that Geddy is my favorite.
@chokfm ??????? really? I'm a HUGE Geddy Lee fan and have been for years. He's truly talented and has tasteful licks but Best? I'd have to say that there are any number of youngsters these days that can truly play circles around him.
@faithandpractice its videos like this that prove you wrong there. I am one of the youngsters (to blow my own trumpet..) that could maybe be as good as geddy, but when he throws out stuff like this, you just feel back to square one.
@bathroomDesignsIdeas Really? You think that it's videos like this that prove me wrong? With respect I'd have to disagree. Geddy is great BUT this there isn't anything "special" about this piece. I'm a guitar player and could pull off that piece (certainly not some of his other stuff though). Yea as a band Rush is one of my all time favorite bands but Geddy can hang with..... say...... Victor Wooten. That's a whole different deal there.
@Theutubedudeyo "No youngsters these days can make ANYTHING NEARLY as musically appealing playing the bass like Geddy can" as he tips his hand revealing his lack of knowledge about music. Musical appeal is a personal matter. You and I agree that Geddy soars when it comes to musical appeal but there are some that may simply "prefer" something else. Does that make them wrong? No. Then there is the mater of technicality. That's more objective. There are more technically "advanced" players.
that was fucking sweet.

I'm a guitar player and could pull off that piece (certainly not some of his other stuff though). Yea as a band Rush is one of my all time favorite bands but Geddy can hang with..... say...... Victor Wooten. That's a whole different deal there.

@faithandpractice
This is him making badass bass music, not him trying to be better than anyone.
Geddy at full potential will kick ANY little youngsters ass. Simple as that.
No youngsters these days can make ANYTHING NEARLY as musically appealing playing the bass like Geddy can.
