@onlyjoetee :) Stay tight, never bob on your toes, the right cross and don't worry about the left- stay tight because his right hook/jab is the greatest ever...
@joshvn715 , If his left is weak then why would he be smashing left hooks on james toney in his fight? Maybe you got the wrong perception cause clearly he's not even trying to really spar here.
You can see the FLAWS of what was a seemingly PERFECT Roy Jones boxing style.
It is however FUNDAMENTALLY flawed because his left is weak and if you bring a tight RIGHT CROSS straight down his "pipe" use your LEFT to shield HIS right hook Reaction.. then you can GET leverage INSIDE and batter away at him
IF USING Roy Jones' stance- you have to be very wary and defensive and that's why he is wide open if extend his left. His left is weak and he never developed a fundamental defense.
@STILLDETOX whaaaaaat? type in roy jones left hook ;) do you know how many people roy jones beat with his left hand? including winning the first hopkins bout with ONLY his left hand? watch how many people get knocked out by devastating left hooks in the video~true he never developed a fundamental defense~that's because he was fast enough strong enough and talented enough to cruise through complete domination for decades and unbeatable without it~opponents he'd destroy caught him on his way out~
@taifsknyse I agree with most of your points, but IMO he had a very good defence early on. In those olympic videos he catches punches very well, moves his head well, shows good lateral movement, fights well off the ropes, etc. (He even jabs well). IMO, when he hired Coach Merc, he hired a yes man who didn't coach him and let him get lazy and sloppy. Have you ever heard Merc say anything in Roy's corner other than 'pour some water on his head'? Peace.
@Allrightteam and peace to you also ...i think my original comment may have been in response to Josh here...and i must agree with you as well concerning Coach Merc...however i think Josh here is right to say "fundamental defense" as even in those old fights he has too much speed for us to see anyone force him to use a fundamental defense ~even though it looks pretty solid as you mention IMO it can't be called "tight" fundamental defense really....
@STILLDETOX opponents who caught him on his way out he would have destroyed in his prime WITHOUT fundamental defense...all due respect to fundamental textbook defense though...i agree it would have kept him undefeated...
@joshvn715 So is it bad to fight like Roy. From what I see it's flawed but works. You have to have great footwork, counter punching ability and superior relexes. (conditioning aswell) I believe if Roy had focused on his defense a bit more he would have had an even better career. But with such ELUSIVENESS he never had to.
Lastly with all of these flaws why did it take so long to stop him because I'm sure if he did not go to heavy w8 he would still be relevent. His style is only for Prime.
@richieray04 Roy was Roy JONES JR. one of if NOT THE finest fighter ever in boxing. He ranked besides Ali and Sugar Ray. However none of those great were so pummeled and wrecked as RJ was in final days.
Roy became a shell of his former and finally, he was the LAST to know how far he had fallen. Roy Jones unlike Ali or other greats still HAD the body... but the lack of fundamental defense is evident.
He did not need elusiveness to be top flight, but his recklessness made him look like a UNTRAINED bum.
He kept wanting to pounce like panther and land haymaker shots but, you CAN'T PREPARE for such things consistently because it is only a matter of time before you EAT A HAYMAKER. Roy did.
@richie Exactly with his elusiveness and power Roy neglected defense and how truly vulnerable he was in his traditional stance.
The only opponent Roy had was time, it was a matter of a time not before he lost but a matter of time until someone would batter his brains in. It was flawed and yes it worked but without a doubt- Jones style is incredibly dangerous only the best athletes even a have a chance to become champion with the style.
@joshvn715 Definitly, However roy jones evasiveness was second to none, his head, body movement and foot work were the real problem. He was so ELUSIVE that it made his style PERFECT except when his athleticism could no longer support it. And because he was not FUNDAMENTAL, it made him all the more UNPREDICTABLE and harder to fight
@siphersniper You wonder what could have been with Roy? The greatest of a generation so shamefully battered into a helpless shell. Because of this what was once could have been a debate of the greatest makes you wonder if he is a top 10 ever.
Was his success based on skill and strength? Or total recklessness and luck?
I actually used to think he could outpoint Evander and beat back Tyson :D Or maybe, in the end, Atlas said- he was in it for the payday???(poor effort vs qk punching Calzaghe)
@joshvn715 Hagler is a top 5 all time. Hagler had it all..Offence, Defense, orthodox, southpaw, power good speed, tuff chin. Could box, could brawl, stamina to go 15 rounds. The best of the new school boxers is Nonito Donaire.
@joshvn715 Bernard Hopkins throws a pretty good straight and it wasn't there for him, in his prime Jone's freakish athleticism carry's all the way to the all time greats!
@banofee999 Roy should have been undefeated but that left can only fire it can't defend. So when you attack Roy's left, he extends or even drops that big right arm.... he will get caught because his left is this weak hanging arm that can only fire.
Go right, he is crafty, fast, and you are open to that LEFT CROSS HOOK. Attack left, he never protects with the left, he kinda leans left and gets hammered from his right
See Glen Johnson, Tarver was bad but Johnson was devastating.
@joshvn715 Spot on man, when he aged more and lost that half step of speed ( athleticism ) his incorrect fundamentals left him open. A good example is B Hop, perfect fundamentals so he doesn't have to make it up in speed. It's why he's soo dam good!!!
@joshvn715 easier said then done everybody has so called wholes that people say they can exploit but the fact is that no human being could do it in his prime he was to talented..when your in there its different the greats dont have fundamental styles the rEASON ROY IS LOOSING NOW ISENT BECAUSE OF HIS STYLE ITS COUS HE IS OLD ,IN HIS prime roy is the best ever (hang em up roy you are my idle )
@chachiSOG Hey Roy was my favorite and thats precisely why it was so hard to watch him fall and fall again. Again in his prime he is unbeatable but the argument is why the lesser talent Bernard lasts and is world champion- while the phenomenal Roy can't last a round with the young guys today.
I love Roy Jones, the bravado, showmanship, athleticism but his fundamentals are lacking. That left was useless.
Try to fight like Roy Jones is you dare, better stick with Bernard textbook.
@gameboy010203 To put it simply Roy Jones goofy footed stance is for loading up the right as he would for the rest of his successful career. But once the cat like reflexes fade and his power is no longer feared Roy was done. Ask pretty much anyone other than dimwitted Jeff Lacy today.
No fighter has fallen as immediately and stunningly fast as Roy from legend to bum in a heartbeat because at his old age with that stance it is a headshot away from KO each time.
@johnosandra this guy "joshvn715 had a good observation. Look hes a legend. It is easy to explain in words to beat roy but look at alll the fighters that failed to beat him in his prime.
@johnosandra ? Anyways... Watch Virgil Hill and then Glen Johnson, the worst thing to do is dance, bob versus Jones- he use the left purely as honing device to gauge to how he will "land his perfect right hand". Roy sole objective is to land the devastating right and he spends the fight- slowly setting it up to slow you down and end it.
@johnosandra However Roy Jones feet, stance and low hands make it impossible to throw the left jab upstairs- he uses the left hand to push off. But stay grounded inside and you will get your chance at the perfect shot.
Still kudos to Jones athleticism and panther quickness to avoid perfect counter combos to funny style. And unlike Bernard Hopkins, or even a Shane or even most legendary fighters. Jones suffered greatly when he lost the athletic edge and power, and fell devastatingly
@moneyright22 almost too easy for me to say but easier for Johnson and Calzaghe to prove.
Roy Jones was the best boxer in the 90s and one of the greatest all time but he had similar problem of incredible athletes such as a Pacquaio, he was not fundamental and unlike Pac- Roy was very careful and patient let his hands go because he was in a bad position to get punished.
Jones regularly could throw less than 15 punches in are round or even less than 10.
@joshvn715 johnson, tarver, and calzaghe gets credit for those wins, no doubt. Roy was at the end of his rope. Like with any boxer who has fought father, time played a role in those wins. Neither one of those fighters would have touch Roy in the 90's. Those fighters greatest wins in their career was against an old fighter. WHo has Tarver beat? Johnson? AND Calzaghe?
