I think this is one of the most beautiful, humbling pieces ever written and that Ms. Upshaw has a wonderful voice. Such feeling and depth. Very moving. I also think the video is distracting and off topic for the piece, but I understand the sentiment.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing this work as well as Colina's The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Three Cabinets of Wonder with Anastasia Khitruk (violin) on 29 Nov. 2011 at Cadogan Hall in London at 19.30 - I'll be there!
So are we sopposed to buy the CD to support Ms. Upshaw and the rest, or send money to whichever nation currently has starving children? Ruined the sustained impact of the piece and a filmed performance, that's what ya did. Now go have a snack.
One of my favorite composers. Regarding this video, however, I believe the music speaks for itself and does not need horrible images running along with it.
@kox300... Shut the fuck up you unworthy of life... people like you shouldn't even exist in this world.. Wait sorry I said people your a fcking monster-- what a waste of life
This was actually based on the heartbreaking messages scratched on the deadly walls of Auschwitz by those waiting to die. Every note burns with their despair.
Those poor starving kids.... It really makes me mad when people completely overindulge. Some people could be very comfortable after donating a big portion of their money. There's no justifiable reason not to, there are millions of people and animals who live and die like those children.
The juxtaposition of these images with this music makes for a very powerful experience and sends a message to all of us, as citizens of this planet, to think about how we treat our fellow citizens.
Useless current events as a euphemism for dying children is certainly the product of a cold, cold heart. I found the video and music extraordinarily emotional - very sad and moving.
Górecki said, " I do not choose my listeners. What I mean is, I never write for my listeners. I think about my audience, but I am not writing for them. I have something to tell them, but the audience must also put a certain effort into it. But I never wrote for an audience and never will write for because you have to give the listener something and he has to make an effort in order to understand certain things."
ROONTUNES - I also watched the BBC4 doc. I thought I had seen most of the Auschwitz footage there was to see over the years. I couldn't have been more wrong. I couldn't keep myself together and just wept. It was some of the most harrowing footage I've seen. Like you, I found Dawn Upshaw mesmerising. Couldn't switch the film off. I agree with Richard ASK, should be compulsory viewing in schools, but we all know it won't be. The film is not for the faint-hearted

The text is based on a Silesian folk song, sung by mother seeking her son, which was killed in the war: "He lies there in a grave and I do not know where, but I ask everywhere and everyone, maybe poor kid lies somewhere in the pit instead of laying in his own hearth-bed. Hey, tweet for him there, ye birds of God, when his mamma cannot find him, and you, flowers of God, blossom all around, let my son lie happy. And you, bad people, why have you killed my son?"
Lezy on tam w grobie, a jo nie wiem kandy, choc sie opytuja miedzy ludzmi wsandy. Moze nieborocek lezy kaj w dołecku. a mógłby se lygać na swoim przypiecku. Ej, ćwierkeycie mu tam, wy ptosecki boze, kiedy mamulicka znalezć go nie moze. A ty, boze kwiecie, kwitnijze w około, niech sie synockowi choć lezy wesoło.
Tekst oparty jest na ludowej pieśni ze Śląska Opolskiego "Kajze mi sie podzioł mój synocek miły" : Kajze mi sie podzioł mój synocek miły? Pewnie go w powstaniu złe wrogi zabiły.
Why do you wanna post pictures of starving children to this clip. There is a place for that as well but maybe not in the middle of a this piece of music.
@desperatefight This pictures relates to the words she is singing. This is a song about a mother, whose son has been murderd. It is a song of sorrow. The video shows, that there are children dying all the time all over the world. This song has no ending.
PS
You can always close your eyes if you do not like the images!
@toopooe You are just so right, you know. Maybe the video would have been even better if the pictures had more gore. Or even better, it could have videos of people actually dieing in car accidents and jumping off building or being shot to death. I am so glad you stood up for this video. You are just soooo right.
@jacero10 That is a song of sorrow. Of course, the author could put there images of rainbows, beaches, sun, laughter, friendship, love. But, would you have any idea, what is she singing about? It is really hard for me to understand what is she speaking and I actually do speak polish. I know, the music is a hint. But it is the most abstract art. You can't guess what is the meaning of it.
You can always pretend, that this things don't happen. Live your imaginary world.
Henryk Mikołaj Górecki died today but in hospital in Katowice (Upper Silesia, south of Poland, 300 km from Warsaw).. he was born in Silesia, he was professor of art in Music Academy of Katowice and he also died here...
My Mother Earth was brutally raped and murdered and now we are left fighting for parts of her bruised body like vultures after a kill. I am not a vulture. I am Human. I mourn for my Mother.
The rich (quasi free, wealthy and healthy) suffer metaphysically and beautifully the physical suffering of the poor (oppressed, tortured, starving) in art (music, film, paintings...).
This symphony had been already 16 years old when Down Upshaw discovered it for the world. It became a great success. Only in Canada 160 000 CDs were sold and over 2 million around the world. This part is based on XIX century unknown folk song and its text. Althugh it is hardly understandable for the contemporary Pole, Down's performance is great and full of pain. This video illustrates what the text is all about. Sorrow and pain of a mother who lost her son and does not know where his bod lies.

@TheFlyfish40 Thank you for letting us know.Perhaps he would not mind using this music in order to help to stop another horror. AS LONG AS the two horrible situations are NOT COMPARED. Their cause is absolutely different: The primitive African world, together with its hostile climate, is something that should permanently concern. But the world is putting much more effort and money in the defamation of Israel. As the hatred to the Jews has never disappeared.
@CLUBHADES This song is about mother who lost son during Silesian Uprising. That was a popular song from Opole voivoeship (sing in characteristical dialect).
I suppose that "lament" (sorrow song) is uniwersal and is not linked to any specific period of time and place. Peace.
The guy who made this video is a fucking racist.. Black people.. suffering from hunger and shit.. What is that? Obviously I feel sorry for them.. But what about other people who suffering? What about people suffering mentally? What about handicapped people? What about people who have lost their whole family's? I mean.. okay.. African people.. dying.. But they haven't seen any other world.. I do feel sorry for them.. But they haven't seen other things then that..
@Zapust this video, I do believe, comes from a DVD that has images from a variety of horrendously suffering peoples, including the Holocaust, from which the texts used by Gorecki are derived. This particular section (excerpted from one of three movements) has images of African starvation, but there are many more. Not so expressly the groups you seem concerned with most, if I recall correctly, but how can one sum up all suffering in one work of art?
@bleemblargo Well okay.. But I start to see Africans starving as racism.. Every single video on youtube with like.. Song that are about sorrow shit and sad music.. And even Linkin Park - What I've done.. It's black people suffering.. Like the only thing they do is suffer..start using other clips as well! What about North Korea? Poor ass people in China and Japan? Animals suffering from the global warming? Auschwitz?
What a lovely heavenly voice! She gives all of herself in this touching piece. Yes, let these images very much disturb us, so that we won't forget them and this music might reach it's goal:
getting our *sses move and DO our part in helping wherever and however we can since they are all our responsibility, all children in all world at all times
thanks for this wonderfull music, honoring the most vulnerable
Pako, hi ! Beautiful and grotesque. Perhaps the complainers feel a little guilty and uncomfortable because they know this is going on but they do nothing about it. One such comment states that the video is about hunger in Africa, Is Tiananmen Square in Africa?/ What was Lech Walesa doing in Africa? The song is about a mother's loss of her son unnecessarily, it happens everywhere, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leon, Ethiopia, North Korea and China. etc. Thanks for the 10 mins.
Jesus christ. How people manage to complain about free shit just baffles me. This guy uploaded a video, for free, that you watch, for free, and he makes some changes pursuant to his personal interpretation of the video, and you comment TWICE in to tell him how KITSCH it is in CAPITALS.
Do you even know what kitsch is? Because I promise you, images of things that have happened and which tie into the themes of this symphony reasonably well aren't it.
You are so right- some people are selfish ingrates, U appreciate listening to an unfamiliar artist and work for Free and then deciding whether I want to purchase it. it.

@chrisk5269 Fuck god. Fuck god. Fuck god. Fuck her. She's a bitch. She's a lesbian bitch with AIDS. It's her fault there's loads of faggot Christians in the world raping all the children and ruining all the families. God is the most evil woman ever. I fucked God in her tight pussy and she screamed for more. I came in God's hair and mouth. I shat on the Ten Commandments and I raped Jesus Christ's bleeding corpse. I fucked Mary and Joseph and made Saint John lick my asshole. All of this happened.
Oops. I meant to type "of courfe, Goode Sire. I hayve much Refpect for ye're old Religion and the great deal of good it is doing the world. Efpecially the way God cured the homofexuals and buggeritef of living by giving them the AIDF, and all of oure Lorde's other great actionf."
an evolution, charles darwin was right, there will only be 1 dominant human specie left in the end, the cleverest or the strongest or the fastest or all 3 combines - your guess folks
As far as common sense and evidence shows there were only two species of Human and those died out millions of years ago because they were unable to adapt to climate changes.
Today there is only one Human species. Go lean some history
i hope there is a place where we will all end up and look down and see what we become.. this planet is slowly turning into a toxic grave which mankind created..if we could take away the oceans, wate etc,.the earth would look like a rotten apple..the super powers of this world make me sick..just look at some of these examples of what mankind does to mankind.. bow your head in shame..

This movement should also be 17 + minutes long. Here it is only 10:06, so who ever posted this, "shorted" the piece by seven minutes as well as depriving you, the listener, of the full benefit of the entire lyrics.
@cflorezgroup I'm so so sorry for that but i could'n upload the entire movement cause Youtube doesn't allow videos longer than 10 minutes. So i put the movement in two parts (This is the second) and even thought to cut it on a "good place" but the first part was deleted and prohibited because of the images... Sorry
@cflorezgroup I suppose the did that because the lyrics talked about a mother who lost his child and her pain and her search to find his body... Is a universal story, it happened not only in Poland
@cflorezgroup What amazes me about this is that you are watching and listening to a video the music for which is the epitome of soul-moving, uplifting and beautiful, music which plunges to the depths of the human soul and shows us every facet of ourselves at once, and the only thing you can do is complain. Does that not speak volumes about you? Do you have no soul? Do you have nothing inside you? Are you eight? How can you sit here and insult the person who is showing you this?
@shadowitself it's a silesian dialect and the singer is American so actually only some words, phrases are intelligible but it doesn't matter... she sings so beautifully
@jijileila either U'r Silesian or linguistic specialist, if U'r able to recognized it as silesian
according the music context - as U said -doesn't matter, nevertheless I find it's annoying when people hear any 'odd' language and recognized it as Polish immediately
@cflorezgroup It's almost as though there are many different things in the world, and that they work together conjunctively. It's almost as though someone from Poland can express the sadness of something happening in Africa. This should not be possible! THIS CAN NOT BE POSSIBLE!
@hoiszhdfoifh22 Gorecki DID NOT write this piece for the sadness that happens in Africa... maybe you should do your research on Gorecki and find out it was the atrocities that happened in Poland. And yes, some Eastern European countries DID go through many of the same terrible things that Africans are going through - starvation, displacement, mass killings etc etc etc. It doesn't matter if you are in the heat of Africa, or freezing in Poland, starving and having your family killed is the same.
beautiful music..some interesting comments too.you can argue this point and that point but the bottom line is we have the tech to stop disease poverty, all of it! but it won't happen.i think the human race is borederline insane anywayit kills its brother mother father sister children at the drop of a hat, irradiating our own planet.did u know that our species is now the equal of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs?thats the devastation we've wrought on our planet.
The original text (that is sung here) is in polish. It was taken from inscriptions on the walls of the baraks of the concentration camp Auschwits. The final part is a prayer from a young girl to the Holy virgin Mary
@FrankRebers No, you're thinking of the second movement, its lyrics are a message that was written on the wall of a prison in Zakopane (not Auschwitz) by a young girl imprisoned by the Nazis.
This is the third movement, its lyrics are a folk song about a mother who believes her son has been killed in the Silesian uprisings.
Realmente transmite usted maestro Gorecky una verdadera sensación del sentirlo con esta obra magnanima q usted emprende con vuelos al futuro inmediato-..... bendiciones donde quiera q estes.,

The genocide we see in Africa is not of our doing, We never have CAUSED a war. We finish them. We are a defensive country. We have never attacked someone who hasnt attacked us or our allies. Whenever we offer help to Africa, the food we send them, the money we send them, anything that we send them. They let it be, let it rot. They dont use it. They dont want our help. Why bother? If they push us away then let them face their genocide. They're obviously asking for it.
There is corruption in USA but it does not cause genocide in the scale that we can see in Africa. We have to unite and strongly expose everybody link to this genocide
Excuse me?? Maybe corruption in USA doesn't cause problems in USA... but what about the millions of people that have died because of the wars that USA have cause...
Pako...The Viet Nam and Iran war kill million or inocents but that mean that we are going to let the Genocide in Ruanda, Zimbawe, and the rest of the African countries out of our attention...

Schtofenbach 1 year ago
@TheFlyfish40 WRONG. He wrote it for the Children of the Holocaust. NOT JUST JEWISH. Gay, Gypsie, Slavic and many others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CLUBHADES 1 year ago

Zapust 1 year ago
@Zapust this video, I do believe, comes from a DVD that has images from a variety of horrendously suffering peoples, including the Holocaust, from which the texts used by Gorecki are derived. This particular section (excerpted from one of three movements) has images of African starvation, but there are many more. Not so expressly the groups you seem concerned with most, if I recall correctly, but how can one sum up all suffering in one work of art?
bleemblargo 1 year ago
@bleemblargo Well okay.. But I start to see Africans starving as racism.. Every single video on youtube with like.. Song that are about sorrow shit and sad music.. And even Linkin Park - What I've done.. It's black people suffering.. Like the only thing they do is suffer..start using other clips as well! What about North Korea? Poor ass people in China and Japan? Animals suffering from the global warming? Auschwitz?

getting our *sses move and DO our part in helping wherever and however we can since they are all our responsibility, all children in all world at all times
thanks for this wonderfull music, honoring the most vulnerable

Third part of the lyrics
Oh, sing for him
God's little song-birds
Since his mother
Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers
May you blossom all around
So that my son
May sleep happily
(Folk song in the dialect of the Opole region)

Second part of the lyrics
He lies in his grave
and I know not where
Though I keep asking people
Everywhere
Perhaps the poor child
Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
lying in his warm bed
cflorezgroup 2 years ago
Third Movement
Where has he gone
My dearest son?
Perhaps during the uprising
The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
My son?

The weird thing about this video is she's singing in Polish, The sub-titles are in Spanish, anf they're showing videos of hunger in Africa!
cflorezgroup 2 years ago 5
@cflorezgroup I suppose the did that because the lyrics talked about a mother who lost his child and her pain and her search to find his body... Is a universal story, it happened not only in Poland

juliusblack666 2 years ago
@cflorezgroup What amazes me about this is that you are watching and listening to a video the music for which is the epitome of soul-moving, uplifting and beautiful, music which plunges to the depths of the human soul and shows us every facet of ourselves at once, and the only thing you can do is complain. Does that not speak volumes about you? Do you have no soul? Do you have nothing inside you? Are you eight? How can you sit here and insult the person who is showing you this?

@jijileila either U'r Silesian or linguistic specialist, if U'r able to recognized it as silesian

@cflorezgroup It's almost as though there are many different things in the world, and that they work together conjunctively. It's almost as though someone from Poland can express the sadness of something happening in Africa. This should not be possible! THIS CAN NOT BE POSSIBLE!
hoiszhdfoifh22 10 months ago
@hoiszhdfoifh22 Gorecki DID NOT write this piece for the sadness that happens in Africa... maybe you should do your research on Gorecki and find out it was the atrocities that happened in Poland. And yes, some Eastern European countries DID go through many of the same terrible things that Africans are going through - starvation, displacement, mass killings etc etc etc. It doesn't matter if you are in the heat of Africa, or freezing in Poland, starving and having your family killed is the same.

navinkc5 2 years ago
The original text (that is sung here) is in polish. It was taken from inscriptions on the walls of the baraks of the concentration camp Auschwits. The final part is a prayer from a young girl to the Holy virgin Mary
FrankRebers 2 years ago
@FrankRebers No, you're thinking of the second movement, its lyrics are a message that was written on the wall of a prison in Zakopane (not Auschwitz) by a young girl imprisoned by the Nazis.
This is the third movement, its lyrics are a folk song about a mother who believes her son has been killed in the Silesian uprisings.
