Mr. Newborn moved home to Memphis in the twilight of his life. He slowly walked into the Peabody Hotel lobby bar very late one night, and sat down at the piano. Even though he was highly intoxicated, sure genius came out of those fingers. He was truly special.
Drummer is Kenny Dennis and bass player, not sure, but may be Al McKibbon. Anyone else care to venture a guess as to the bassist? I am sure of the drummer. He was married to Nancy Wilson and they had a son together. Very hip, this video with OB Jr., another one I dig.
@vova47 Thank you for clearing that up, I thought so! Happy New Year to you and thanks for posting this great video of important music. I met Phineas via Hamp Hawes. Nice man and great artist. One of a kind.
@ocnoreen Glad to be of help. And a very Happy New Year to you as well! I never met Phineas but heard him in New York on several occasions. One night, after his own gig, he turned up at Bradley's, as many musicians used to do. Walter Davis Jr. was playing there and he was really burning on his late set. Suddenly,he saw Phineas and asked him to come up and play one.Well, I will never forget his solo rendition of "Out of This World" because it was just that. He brought the house down...
@vova47 Thanks, Yes I heard him play that night in L.A. and hung with him as well. He and Hamp were great friends, both with Contemporary Records. I was blessed to know and hear the giants of this great music we call jazz. Phineas set a new standard! He was blessed with colossal talent.
