  • is the aural piece baroque or classical? To me it is more classical, but the boy's answer was baroque. I am all confused. Anyone?

  • @giantusa Never mind. judge eliminated classical as a choice, I did not pay attention to how judge framed the question. My bad.

  • such a shit piano.

  • The examiner reminds me of Joja Wendt. It would be good to see other grade exams and/or ones one different instruments. Also, do you have to play from memory for a grade 5 sax exam?

  • Is that scales too fast?

  • O_o i didn't know i had to play my scales that fast

  • half a minute for sight reading....ur kidding me right

  • so cool

  • WOW ITS JACK DEE!

  • Oh my, I wish I can play like his scale -.- But my examiner was nice, he makes me comfortable during exam last year ^_^ I have me grade 4 exam soon. Wish me all the best. p/s This video freaked me out -____-

  • Eeekkkk!!!!! I have my grade 4 exam in 5 days and I'm freaking out!!! This kid is good!!! I'm about as good as him at playing the pieces and the main part of the aural tests but I suck at sight reading and my scales are SO not as polished as his!!!!!! 😢😢😢😢

  • @19967a

faster at higher grade. But in this grade, I think it's suffice. :P

  • do we have to play the scales THAT fast? :O

  • @19967a no!! abrsm website show their required minimum speeds

  • Yikes, hope my piano examiner doesn't stare at me like that. o3o

    Oh, the pressure... T^T

Don't think I'd be able to smile like the kid, either. -w-

Grade eight exam in two more days~ >0<

  • trinity is better

  • Ok I'm really dead :/

  • very good

  • are you allowed the sheet music for the pieces????

  • Comment removed

  • I'm preparing for my Grade 5 exam at the moment. I believe I can play the pieces to a high standard and the scales/arpeggios to a decent standard. Also, I think I can do some of the aural tests as well. But does it matter if my sight reading isn't that good? Will I still manage to achieve a pass/merit?

  • @Matchmad Pass should be easy if you relax yourself. Prepare and do more exercise on sight-reading to get a merit or higher result.

  • @BrianCuber Thank you for the advice!

  • Grade 7 I was actually gonna faint.

  • can anyone tell me what the first piece was called? thanks in advance!

  • His scales were excellent, and he had quick responses. However i could hear 1 mistake in the scales and arpeggios section. In his pieces he really "felt" the music, and his position on the piano was good! His sight reading, from what i could hear was good. His aural was "okay" however the singing part wasn't the best of parts. A definite pass! Well done, you are really talented at playing the piano! I felt like i was listening to a professional pianist.

  • @markyjkl its like an education.

  • i'm having my practical grade 5 tomorrow. wish me luck! =/

  • Damn, my scales are terrible compared to this... :/

  • Grade 7th exam later.. and my scales suck T.T and my sight-reading relies on luck aissh...

But he could improve on his singing.

  • Dang!I got my Grade 5 Piano exams this Wednesday!:(

Kinda scared right now..especially for the sight-reading!

  • I'm f**cked. Got my exam in December and I'm no where near this. >.<

  • Lmao this guy's scales are so good .

  • Jesus Christ help me! I might as well give up piano!

  • Looks like a Hogwarts student

  • which year is the sylabus

  • the way this guy plays makes me nervous for my exams T.T

  • EXAM using STEINWAY?

  • so it the answer actually baroque?

  • Did he pass and when did he pass with? And I swear he wasn't actually given 30 seconds practice for the sight Reading bit ?

  • @xcrimsonxstarsx LOL.. they give ABOUT half a minute.. so not really exactly 30 secs.. depends on your examiner >o<

  • what grade was Horovitz? or Kissin? or Chopin? or Mozart?

  • do we have play this fast for the grade 5 exam ? :O

  • @MakeupAddict55 no, it has a crotchets per minute mark above te scales in teh grade book indicating the timing.

  • Your guys' exams are a little different than ours

  • Does anybody know the title of the first piece ?

  • this exam is scary!

  • Scales? Those finger turns are impossible. I'd trip over. And i do. Frequently. This kid is gooooooooood though.

  • HOLY SHIT! I'm scared of my grade five exam!!!

  • ahhhhh asldjkhaldjf my gr 10 exam's in 5 days , so nervous!!!

  • @cuulgrrl Good luck. Don't envy you.

  • :O omg I'm so scared to take my exam tomorrow :OAaaaaaaah.

  • @Leesan1980 Mines tday

  • almosts gave me a heart attack!!

  • dude you are amazing!!! totally impressed!!

  • they r suppose to b evry 4 isnt evry 3 until like grade 3-4

  • guys wernt the scales done wrongly cos he was doing them evry 3 u knw what i mean right?

  • You can use books if you need to but like me one I know a piece I never need to look at a book again. It's up to the person. I thought these scales were too fast.

  • he dont have a book!

Are you aloud books in grade 5???

  • is this guy secretly filming exams???

  • is this rcm?

  • does he ask the stool question every time?

  • Scales too fast for Grade 5

  • Scales OMG!! Hes good!

  • cute boy

  • Today I knew I passed with Distinction :) :) :)

  • wow his contrary motion was really good. how come they only do three octaves for the other scales?

  • OMG!!! IM IN G2 AND G5 LOOKS SOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD!!!!!!!SHIIIIIIT!!!

  • Examiners look so cool when they sight read a piece -.- LOL

  • The examinner was not looking at his fingerings at all ,is this normal?

  • @crazymusicer yep, it's normal, i don't think they really care. It's how legato you're able to play them.

  • @crazymusicer Its normal lol. Its about how legato and how musical it sounds.

  • OMG

  • Omg I just watched the Grade 1 one, and then hearing his D major scale. SHOCKING

  • His scales were confident, prompt, and all-round consistent but im not sure if he should have accented the last note each time. I think the best part was his pieces. Especially the first two. I felt bad for him during the aural exam. its really frustrating to have a maturing voice and I have that same problem too. His performance overall was amazing and he almost certainly got distinction. I wonder what scores he got though.

  • I've done it THIS MORNING!! The examinator was really nice, she smiled often and she made me feel less nervous. Hope I will pass!!!

  • why has Jack Nicholson started examing pianop students?

  • Woaaaah! Amazing scales! My scales are terrible in comparison. O.o Right... off back to the piano to practise those scales... D:

  • this is giving me butterflies in my belly... im gunna have my 5th grade exam and i still suck at scales and stuff :/

  • Wow the boy's scales are good......I still get stuck in some keys...

  • seems so different to grade 1...

    makes me feel loads better

  • That kid has got a brown nose.....

  • i hate the scales and sight reading it is like the hardest thing :(

  • This is so fake! Exams are not like that! They never ask you that many scales and you never get everything right!!!

  • @59rmoore They do when you get to grade 5.

  • @59rmoore

wtf dude, i just did my grade 4 and got everything right and a high distinction!

They asked exactly the same amount in the grade 4 as they did in this one.

  • i just had my exam TODAY only two scales where KINDA okay and 1 was horrible arpeggios where okay contray motion not so good the guy was decent enough but his expression is indescribable you can't be sure if he's pissed or he's actually enjoying what you're playing.

  • Exams are SCARY. I hate when you practice and practice and PRACTICE and you get it wrong at the exam.

  • Exams are SCARY. I hate when you practice and practice and PRACTICE and you get it wrong at the exam

  • ...If only I could be this amazing at scales.

  • love how the boy leans in at the end of every piece/ scale :-)

  • so a real piano exam is only 12 minutes?!

  • Where is his book?

  • This is very helpful as it demonstrated a real piano exam. However, my piano teacher trained me for some harder aural pieces and sight-reading pieces. The sight-reading looks easy, and the aural sounds simple. I am in the choir so I have no trouble singing on pitch (what with all the intensive training) but they mentioned the aural rubrics weren't finalized... I want to know what to expect. Is the aural really going to be so simple?

  • I'm felt nervous for the kid while watching this video, that's how intense it is

  • @MikeNvS same for me too. :l

  • must one play like this to pass :( im really bad at the piano.

  • @viveeann one must play like this to get distinction. Don't worry

  • Is it always harmonic minor or something at Grade 5?

  • he's really good. hahahaa POO i hope i do well.

  • this was very helpful for me, because i will be starting exams very soon this year and this gave me a clear idea of what its like!

  • this was really helpful!

  • The guy sounds sooooooooo scary:')

  • Uh, what's all this talk about the Steinway? People, this is a PIANO exam, not a Steinway grand piano exam. If you can't play on an ordinary upright piano or if it seriously affects your performance then you can't say you can play the piano.

On the other hand, if you can play SO well that only a Steinway-class piano is good enough to really do you justice, then why are you concerned about a grade 5 piano exam?

  • @aditsu lol chill their just sayin steinway is good

  • Really good :) whats the second piece called?

  • I hate these situations! It seems rather a medical examination than an artistic test.

  • @liszt80 i hate doing exams and performances even in front of my mum, who is my teacher! :/ i get really stressed! :/

  • Must say I would be pleased to play on a steinway!

My last exam was on an upright Yamaha :)

  • Arpeggios should be 3 octaves :)

  • This kid can play well, but can't sing nor clap a rhythm.

I don't understand what he said about why that piece was from the baroque period. Anyway, the aural tests are my greatest concern for the exam (I plan to take it this year)

  • "give the knob a twirl..."

  • @williamhhay

thas going down try the other way....

  • id like to know what he did get. im taking grade 5 soon and am worried about the aural tests :s

  • I do wonder if most exams actually run as perfect as the one shown on here? surely this young boy must have got full marks! he seems to be a grade 8 player taking a grade 5 exam!

  • @joparkeruk I have to agree with you there. If this young lad was one of my pupils, I would probably be entering him for Grade 8, NOT Grade 5!

  • Wonderful video, lovely young pianist. Wish to made my exam on a Steinway LOL
