Of course the riderless horses did well - less weight is a huge advantage, and they continue to run with their herd... it doesn't count for any ind of record keeping or purse money, though.
The riderless horses pose a tremendous danger to all of the other horses on the course because they're unpredictable. When the fence finally turns the first riderless horse around 5:08, it nearly creates a massive pile-up. Excellent riding saved the day there, though.
It wasn't the same riderless horse all along... there were 2 one at the start of the race that stopped and went around a hedge. The other one was near the end of the race and continued on to third.... cool how the horses just kepp going despite no rider. Who says they dont love it!
and the horse still running very well riderless proves that they don't force the horses to run. if the horses didn't wanna run, it certainly wouldn't have run
wow i have never seen this- is it like, France's version of the Grand National? i like the variety of fences- not big, stiff or particularly scary, but fun to watch. The Grand National is still the best though :)
Dang steeplechase is one brutal sport. You don't just have to win, you have to stay on! When the first and second horse opened up on the field, I was just thinking, "And then there was two."
thanks for this video! does anyone have a tape of the complete race,or extensive highlights of Fred Winter and Mandarin's win in the 1962 Gd Steeple de Paris? Also tapes of Katko,HyeresIII,Jay Trump,Captain Christy etc. etc. and any other archive footage of French jump racing you could put on YouTube.thanks

I spent too much of my time watching the riderless horse, LOL.
It got a 3rd, but ran around at least one hedge. It also stopped once, too, though.
