there are actually a couple of things wrong here. one being that the piles are hollow for this buildings foundation, and it appears that they excavated and piled it earth to one side of the building causing a major pressure bulb issue.
Look at the building's foundation, that's absolutely ridiculous, it only goes down like 15 feet, completely stupid. That probably means the other buildings were built the same. That is what you get when a country with little expertise gets rich too fast. Things get done quick and wrong, and this happens.

I know these are just crappy apartment blocks, and that China has some serious issues atm. BUT Chinese architecture (old AND new) is some of the most amazing in the world.

The pile caps are hollow and their dimensions seem extremely suspect. If you look at the 3rd pile from the left at 0:16, it seems to be sitting undeneath a basement window, no structural intergrity there. The lateral pressure from so much earth would have had a dam effect, without any resistance. Putting up a 13 storey building without pile caps or lateral ground resistance, shows balls.
anytime you get Govt involved expect disasters on a large scale. Losers get govt jobs, because they are uncomfortable fending for themselves that freedom demands.
In Dec 09 a 32-story condo tower on South Padre Island in Texas had to be imploded after being topped out because of a foundation failure. So we screw up to lol.

The fact that the building was intact and did not break apart shows that it is structurally sound. Though the engineer probably did not get his calculations right on the site it was built upon. I think the soil was was not condensed enough?

The pile caps are hollow and their dimensions seem extremely suspect. If you look at the 3rd pile from the left at 0:16, it seems to be sitting undeneath a basement window, no structural intergrity there. The lateral pressure from so much earth would have had a dam effect, without any resistance. Putting up a 13 storey building without pile caps or lateral ground resistance, shows balls.

Must have been some of that Chinese drywall lol This had nothing to do with engineering. The other buildings are intact. This has everything to do with an uneducated excavation company that dug a 4.6 meter for a garage and made a 10 meter pile on the opposite side. Not realizing the lateral pressure they created was in-excess of 3000 tons which broke the pilings. I believe the Chinese Government was involved with this, so I wonder who will get whacked with the liabilities? All I can say is WOW!

The fact that the building was intact and did not break apart shows that it is structurally sound. Though the engineer probably did not get his calculations right on the site it was built upon. I think the soil was was not condensed enough?

I would say the engineer overestimated the soil resistance of the hill the building was built on. From the traces at right it seems the building slid down the hill before tipping over.
