Along with the new battery charging tech coming from NZ, the world is only one notch away from widespread use of electrics. Fantastic job on the conversion, and I hope to have something similar in the future!
I know this is a long time coming and you may not even read your comments any more but I have had an idea for a long time about adding a 7200 watt belt driven generator head and placing it in with the motor to recharge the car as it drives through pulleys and belt drives but not sure of the particulars as to how you could make that work but what i was thinking is about something that would be drivven by a gear off of the end of the shaft that comes out of the oposing end of the electric motor.
18 amps on the new charger. This really has me stoked, my uncle is a mechanic. If I can build one for under $10 000 I might just get a loan and do it. New question: Have you kept track of your battery health since you made it. When do you expect to need new batteries?
I usually never let my flooded lead battery pack go below 50% charge...people with EV's seem to differ with opinions relating to the longevity of the battery pack versus depth of discharge. Your thoughts? I would imagine also you get better range in warmer weather?
Hey grt vids, quick q: im about to start converting a porsche 924.The prob is batteries, im thinking of using a forklift motor and only really have access to car lead acid batts, not the gell deep cycle ones used by golf carts. Your experience with the diff batteries?? cheers from the uk
Why'd you fill the center of the trunk with batteries instead of putting them to the sides? It just seems like you could've made more efficient use of trunk space, and had room to fit larger items in it.
Great Video Gav - Can you explain why you used the electric motor that you did? I know that there is DC and AC electric motors all with different power abilities. Could you please elaborate more on your electric motor?
Awesome vid Gav! I have been considering building an EV myself and your videos may have pushed it over the top.
I suggest a follow-up video that discusses problems you encountered over time, odometer readings, accumulative savings, etc. and perhaps your "satisfaction index."
About the motors that generate more energy that comes out that you put in do exist. Its called an overunity device. An ausi inventer was on the news. Check these youtube clips:

another model from the same company:

They have patented the technology and searching for investers. Their website explains how the engine works.
No, Even if he would invent a generator with absolutly no losses whats so ever - he would still gain absolutly nothing. Accutally he would still loose somewhat due to the extra weight he would carry around. You cant create energy. Basic nature law.
2 dollars per charge!! Awsome. In holland we pay 1,67 euro per 1 liter of gas. In US dollars and standards thats 2.6 dollars per liter, so thats 9.82 dollars per gallon.
Everyone in Holland is sick and tired of these prices. Now maybe you will understand why I wanna build one of these.
I'm using twelve 85 A/h batteries in series to create 144 volts. While this seems to do the trick for our little town, for anyone else I'd recommend larger batteries for extra range.
I have a generator that is 180 lbs and puts out 100 amps at 48 volts. Runs on Diesel. I'm planning to do a trailer/generator for my S-10 Blazer conversion.
You should make a reaction video showing how people react when you tell them it's electric. Maybe drive circles around gas stations just to see what people say.
Ooooh cool! A Bently Turbo R! You lucky bugger! :)
For the next car I'd just rip everything out of the Tredia and swap it over. I'd use a lighter car with better aerodynamics and less "Brickodynamics" and I'd definitely use long range Lithium batteries. LiFePO4 lithium batts are almost the same price as lead batteries mile-for-dollar now!
Have fun with it, are you going to sell it or keep it if you should happen to convert another car Gav?
If so you should get a Skyline GTR, Supra, or something fast I'm working on a 1989 Bentley Turbo R right now I got enough money selling the engine and trans to pay for the motors and controler and most of my Lithium Ion batteries.

a long distance you can stop to gas station and find a plug in there if you use one charger installed in the car and charge it :)

What are the possibilities for larger chargers? How much biggger than the small 3.5a are we talking?
Purifiedinfire 1 year ago
Only 3 thumbs down? Come people finish me off. Then burn the solar panels. stick to coal buring and fosil fuels.

You can not create energy? what the hell does a solar panel do?
edstar83 3 years ago
Solar panels CONVERT energy. DUH !!
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, merely converted.
marcuskeeler 2 years ago
Once you buy the solar panels the engergy "CONVERTED" is FREE!!!! thats my point. DUH
edstar83 2 years ago
@edstar83 energy converted by solar panels would be minuscule and expensive

@edstar83 converst energy.

Do you have any problems with insurance companies, refusing to insure the vehicle? How do you go around that?
jota4u 3 years ago
Yeah a little, I had to phone around but I got full insurance in the end at $480 NZ a year (around $300 US).
cant7think7clearly 3 years ago
@cant7think7clearly How does that compare to your insurance rate on a gas car?
I know I pay about $2000 a year for full insurance in Canada, but I'm young. I'm wondering if insurance dropped alot.

All for simplicity mate. The next EV will be more refined that's for certain.

You end putting more energy in the generator then the generator would generate? That depends on what type of generator you would use dont you think?
