I 1st heard of her from doing background vocals on a rap song by Eric B & Rakim, Paid in Full !!! Yes, I sd rap. We do have other tastes and appreciate good music, regardless of the genre. Incredibly soothing & relaxing. Sexxxxy as hell too

Ofra had a voice of satin, wrapped in the veil of a tiger. those that are responsible for her death, may they die a thousand times. It was no accident. We the people were robbed of beauty of the eyes and ears. She was one of if not the greatest talent to even rise out of the Middle East.
@allowayfreestate ...I can't say, but I don't believe she had HIV and the Flu usually doesn't kill so fast. As well as, why would her doctor say she was going to be fine when it was apparent she was dying....very odd. her sister gives an interview here on youtube, just search ofra haza dies...
@siamesecatful *Buzzer* Wrong! Jewish is a race as well as a religion. When the Ethiopian Jews claimed the right of return, it was DNA that proved their Jewishness not their faith. Secondly, I don't know where you have been living but have you not heard of atheist-Jews before? Go to the temple and ask the Rabbi what a Jew is please.
@siamesecatful Just like the Jews who migrated to Europe and mixed with European DNA so did the Jews that ventured around the Middle East including Yemen. Her lineage surely contains Arab DNA but she is descended from Jews and that's what makes her Jewish through her mothers line.
I am american I don't know what she is saying but I have been in love with her voice since it was sampled on a hip hop song in the 80's. Her voice is hypnotic and soothing.
she became famous in europe with de dance version of im nin alu and also a hit in PORTUGAL. she came to sing in lisbon in coliseu dos recreios ( if I could find the video...) I missed my fucking english test to go to see her and I have some photos. I remember very well it was around 1995 and se invited who wanted from the public to dance with her on stage ! my godness ! and i stupid very shy i didn't go... later in 2000 i knew from a magazine in the carnival taht she died i couln't believe...
I discovered Ofra for myself in 1985 ( I guess i was a little slow finding her) and she has remained among my favorite vocalists/artists since then. As a person, she was what i think more people should strive to be and what I strive to be. Loving, fair, conscientious and considerate, desiring peace. And as an artist, she was all that anyone can ever hope for: Talented, skilled, gifted and heard. If we could just learn from her to set aside our arguments and hate and be brothers and sisters. :-)
I agree with ricochet217. This Christian loves the voice of this beautiful singer whom God took from us too soon. First learned of her with the movie Prince of Egypt. Talent is a gift from the Almighty and when it's enjoyed (even in a language one doesn't speak), it's a response to the God-spark in all of us. Those who hate, sadly not only don't get it, but cheat themselves of so much.
@mrpoet212 its this kind of digusting racism and narrow mindedness that keeps people at war. Why cant you simply enjoy a wonderful talent like Ofra Haza without bringing your ugly hate into the picture. Im sad for you, but mostly just digusted
ein ...üübbelst.....geiles...lied...ich weiss nich, ich kenn das seit 20 Jahren...ich lieb das immer noch......da fühl ich mich iwie ..eingewickelt/geborgen
One of the most beautiful voices ever...I didn't understand the lyrics because I don't speak Hebrew or Arabic but her singing transcended all language and cultures (unless one just wants to hate). Such a tragic death. May her memory be eternal.
Music is one of the only beauties we have in life that is for free, whether we hear it on the radio or sing to ourselves. I love this song even if I don't understand what the words mean.
Thank you so much for uploading this. My vinyl copy of this is so worn out (Globe Style 1985, published 1985 Hed-Arzi Ltd, copyright 1985 Ace Records Ltd) I can't remember how long ago it was since I heard this without crackles!!! Many thanks again for the upload, Warm Regards, Ivor
@mrpoet212 well said akhi. i may not be arabian myself, but i hold arabian ancestry, and its something i take a pride in. im the decendants of yemeni's myself, of the greater yemen, mullahs and merchants from the town of najran, my ancestral home. in india you will find thousands of decendants of ancient yemeni's.
what do american jews have in common with these middle eastern jews? nothing. these people are culturally, ethnically, linguistically, culinary, and racially ARAB!
i remember my parents telling me they first heard her when they were in france and that the french were like "who knows what she's saying but her voice is incredible" LOL!
I first heard this album by Ofra Haza in about 1985 or so in of all places, Austin Texas! Ever since then I have loved Ofra's voice, listening to her always makes me happy even though I can't understand what she's singing! This particular album is one of my favorite albums by anyone, ever, first had it in vinyl, than casette I think than finally CD. Thank you so much for bringing us this video!
i always remember the first time i rediscovered the original of im nin alu and noticed the big change done to the '88 played in full remix. the timing, im nin alu's time signature shifts often, it's 12/8 at some phrases and then it's 14/8 on a couple of phrases. on the '88 version all phrasings and lyrics are fitted for 4/4
The 1978 version is by the theatre workshop of the neighborhood Ofra grew up in. The band included 7 members including Ofra. It was a live version as I recall.
The 1984 version is the first studio version recorded by Ofra as a solo artist.

es hermoso este tema como pueden desactivar las puntuaciones para este video es una de las grandes cantantes yemeni israeli que ah habido en este mundo ofra haza no todos puedne cantar como ella
This song IS in Hebrew, not "Yemenite" (there is no such language), but it she is pronouncing the Hebrew correctly unlike most modern Israelis. Even today Jews from Yemen pray exactly this way and read the Torah this way. It is simply Hebrew done the right way. Most Jews over the many centuries of exile have lost the ablity to pronounce Hebrew correctly.
@cjacja21 I am Muslim, and i've always liked this artist, and i did not hit anything the foreign policy of humanity, the art, it means that something is left of humanity
@cjacja21 Religion shouldn't be a factor in liking Ofra Haza. In any case she is singing to the God of Israel and therefore her singing foreruns the Christian God.
The song is in hebrew. Some of the lyrics are in a yemenite dialect which was spoken by Jews who lived in Yemen Centuries ago. This dialect is still used today by some people.
Her parents were expelled from Yemen before her birth and set out on foot through the Arabian desert, eventually being airlifted to Israel. This stunning dress in the video took eight hours to put on. It was used on the first record released in the U.S. (which used this for the cover photo).
@holdencaulfield79 Just FYI - Jews lived in Yemen up to the 1950's when they were forced to leave the country they had lived in for generations upon generations for their own safety. Israel airlifted them in an operation called Operation Magic Carpet ("Mivtsa Marvad HaKsamim"), though there are a very small few who chose to stay behind. The Yemenite Jewish culture is indeed old and rich.
I made a bellydance to this ^^

As far as I know there are many jews in Yemen for nowadays and Ofra was jewish too. It's only a minority but nothing less than the largest in Yemen.

It's Hebrew wiyh Jewish Yemenite exent. The writet of the lyrics is Rabi Shalom Shabzi who's still burried in Yemen

I'm willing to use wave software to show you that it is the sample they used.
What makes you think it is not? I can hear that it is, and my ears don't generally let me down, I'm a music producer.

Thank you for posting, this is the version Eric B and Rakim used to sample for "Paid in Full" where I first heard it.
I adore this original version, I don't understand the words but it's so beautiful that it gives me goosebumps anyway.
Rest in Peace Ofra - beautiful

what language is?
zeroabura 1 year ago
The song is in hebrew. Some of the lyrics are in a yemenite dialect which was spoken by Jews who lived in Yemen Centuries ago. This dialect is still used today by some people.

Her parents were expelled from Yemen before her birth and set out on foot through the Arabian desert, eventually being airlifted to Israel. This stunning dress in the video took eight hours to put on. It was used on the first record released in the U.S. (which used this for the cover photo).

@notvalidcharacters I didn't know any of that. Thank you for sharing.

@holdencaulfield79 . FY! Yemenite dialect Hebrew language. It is related to our Somali language such Nin Alu has 'ayn "H" and qaf. . Er.
taano71 1 year ago
@holdencaulfield79 Just FYI - Jews lived in Yemen up to the 1950's when they were forced to leave the country they had lived in for generations upon generations for their own safety. Israel airlifted them in an operation called Operation Magic Carpet ("Mivtsa Marvad HaKsamim"), though there are a very small few who chose to stay behind. The Yemenite Jewish culture is indeed old and rich.
