Van fan here. This guy is just insane! I was worried in the last playoffs that Van would have to face him and the ever dangerous Wings in the playoffs, but Datsyuk would figure into any opposing team's nightmares. Amazing skills!

Crosby is probably the best player in the NHL, but I would argue Datsyuk is the most underrated player in the NHL. Takeaways, face-offs, and world class two-way forward play are extremely important in the game today. Points simply don't mean everything. Crosby is amazing, but I'd take Datsyuk as a close second.
@Nubbiee No doubt this year Crosby took over the league big time, but in 2nd was Datsyuk before his injury he was on pace for over 105pts which is just insane regarding his defense is better than Crosby. Also, please don't try to compare Crosby two way game to Datsyuk hes got a ways to go but might be there one day. Datsyuk controls the game, he can speed it up or slow it down his vision allows him to do this. Theres a reason Gretz said Datsyuk has the best vision in the NHL. Watch TSN top 10.
@Nubbiee you do realize when Datsyuk came into the league he was put on the 4th line because Detroit was so deep right ? he played 4th line minutes almost up until '04 then played 3rd line minutes till '05. Crosby came in and was a 2nd line center then took over the top line. You also have to take into effect that in Russia its a totally different game, coming over to the NHL from Russia in the first couple years isn't going to be easy, everything is slower there. I would still take Dats tho.

the only reason he hasnt had a 40 plus goal season yet is cause the wings are so loaded with talent they dont need one guy to have 100 points, they have 4-5 guys with 50+ and they have lidstrom, if pavel played on a team where he was the only offensive force hed be a 100 point guy every season, he had 87, 87, 97,97, and 70 but was hurt alot of last year, this year look for him to be around 100 again
@MrShacky96 You do realize how deep the Red Wings were in those years right ? He played on the 4th line mostly with players that were at the end of their careers. It was pretty much his early glimpse of the NHL, and didn't have minutes like he does now.

@evilfishtank00 I agree with you n that's what most of the people who argue that datsyuk isn't as good or better as the stamkos, crosbys, and ovechkins is that they don't realize the energy he expends playing both ends of the ice, penalty killing, and the plays he makes to set up his teammates rather than taking the goals. If you know hockey you would know with his puck handling, quickness, and shot he could easily put up 70 goals and 120 plus points if he wanted too

@MrShacky96 Those are playoff stats you're looking at. He actually had 35, 51 and 68 respectively in those years. Like Eatsoup1 said, the Red Wings were easily the strongest team in the NHL at that time, so Datsyuk was seeing limited minutes. Datsyuk was also a 171st draft pick. Him and Zetterberg were easily the best picks ever considering their spot in the draft. I don't know many other 171st or 210nd draft picks that play nearly as well as either of them.
@jjereee Kovalev is the best dangler/stick handler in the game ? He does a dangle every 40 games, Datsyuk does it every single game. Kovalev is nothing but a lazy player and isn't happy unless hes the captain. Have you not watched any game hes played for Ottawa ? hes invisible, so how is he the best dangler / stick handler, he should surely make at least one highlight, or be nominated for a goal of the year candidate like Datsyuk is every year.

steven stamkos had a good year. i guarantee he wont have the year he did last year, and just because you get the most points or goals doesn't mean your the best player in the league. i bet datsyuk has 5x more takeaways and better in the plus minus category
Now, your right about Ovy and Crosby always having the puck, because they can't complete a play without them touching it to get an assist or goal hence why 100+ points a season and such offensive numbers. Just watch all their plays, they usually have it then pass it, and get it back then pass/shoot. Datsyuk doesnt do that, because hes playing a two way game, and he shoots less and plays a lot less minutes. Make Datsyuk a winger and let him go on offense and then watch him put up way more points.

Datsyuk may not be the strongest, fastest, or has the best shot. But his vision, ability to read the ice, and his CRAFTINESS is what makes him so hard to cover and one of the best players in the league. he is just so god damn tricky with with puck

@QUINTANBASKETBALL Towes has done nothing to show why hes worthy of the Selke, he wasn't even a finalist last year. Towes is right now a mediocre player that has some defensive capablilties. Datsyuk is on way higher level of game than Towes will touch as long as Datsyuk plays in the NHL, Towes takeaways last year were below 50, Datsyuk had over 130, and had more blocked shots and the list goes on. Production wise, Towes better up his numbers because he never broke the 80 point mark lol.

Crosby has been injured for a few weeks now but the amazing thing is he is sitll top 5 in points. This year pavel has played 38 games and has 41 points. Crosby has played 41 games and has 66 points and is a plus 20. Pavel is a plus 13. The stats dont lie. Pavel is a great player, but crosby has become a better player. Not to mention crosby plays with 3rd liners

Also Crosby was the center for the first line while you can look at Detroit's lines back then filled with Yzerman,Fedorov,Larionov etc. All star players who got a lot more time. So starting at the third or fourth line net's him a lot less time on ice.
Also they get like 14-17 minutes game time still compared to Crosby's 20-23 minutes.

Crosby is probably the best player in the NHL, but I would argue Datsyuk is the most underrated player in the NHL. Takeaways, face-offs, and world class two-way forward play are extremely important in the game today. Points simply don't mean everything. Crosby is amazing, but I'd take Datsyuk as a close second.

@Nubbiee No doubt this year Crosby took over the league big time, but in 2nd was Datsyuk before his injury he was on pace for over 105pts which is just insane regarding his defense is better than Crosby. Also, please don't try to compare Crosby two way game to Datsyuk hes got a ways to go but might be there one day. Datsyuk controls the game, he can speed it up or slow it down his vision allows him to do this. Theres a reason Gretz said Datsyuk has the best vision in the NHL. Watch TSN top 10.

@Nubbiee you do realize when Datsyuk came into the league he was put on the 4th line because Detroit was so deep right ? he played 4th line minutes almost up until '04 then played 3rd line minutes till '05. Crosby came in and was a 2nd line center then took over the top line. You also have to take into effect that in Russia its a totally different game, coming over to the NHL from Russia in the first couple years isn't going to be easy, everything is slower there. I would still take Dats tho.

the only reason he hasnt had a 40 plus goal season yet is cause the wings are so loaded with talent they dont need one guy to have 100 points, they have 4-5 guys with 50+ and they have lidstrom, if pavel played on a team where he was the only offensive force hed be a 100 point guy every season, he had 87, 87, 97,97, and 70 but was hurt alot of last year, this year look for him to be around 100 again

@MrShacky96 You do realize how deep the Red Wings were in those years right ? He played on the 4th line mostly with players that were at the end of their careers. It was pretty much his early glimpse of the NHL, and didn't have minutes like he does now.

@evilfishtank00 I agree with you n that's what most of the people who argue that datsyuk isn't as good or better as the stamkos, crosbys, and ovechkins is that they don't realize the energy he expends playing both ends of the ice, penalty killing, and the plays he makes to set up his teammates rather than taking the goals. If you know hockey you would know with his puck handling, quickness, and shot he could easily put up 70 goals and 120 plus points if he wanted too

@MrShacky96 Those are playoff stats you're looking at. He actually had 35, 51 and 68 respectively in those years. Like Eatsoup1 said, the Red Wings were easily the strongest team in the NHL at that time, so Datsyuk was seeing limited minutes. Datsyuk was also a 171st draft pick. Him and Zetterberg were easily the best picks ever considering their spot in the draft. I don't know many other 171st or 210nd draft picks that play nearly as well as either of them.

@jjereee Kovalev is the best dangler/stick handler in the game ? He does a dangle every 40 games, Datsyuk does it every single game. Kovalev is nothing but a lazy player and isn't happy unless hes the captain. Have you not watched any game hes played for Ottawa ? hes invisible, so how is he the best dangler / stick handler, he should surely make at least one highlight, or be nominated for a goal of the year candidate like Datsyuk is every year.

Datsyuk had 97 points as his highest total, but hes a two way player, he plays both parts of the game, Offense and Defense. He doesn't wait up ice for the breakaway pass like Ovy and Crosby, and doesn't shoot over 400 shots a year like them either. As for playoffs, how many points did Crosby have in the 11 games they played ? LOL. Datsyuk dangles are better than anyone in the NHL.

Now, your right about Ovy and Crosby always having the puck, because they can't complete a play without them touching it to get an assist or goal hence why 100+ points a season and such offensive numbers. Just watch all their plays, they usually have it then pass it, and get it back then pass/shoot. Datsyuk doesnt do that, because hes playing a two way game, and he shoots less and plays a lot less minutes. Make Datsyuk a winger and let him go on offense and then watch him put up way more points.

realistic ? how could the best hockey player in the NHL only be one dimensional ? Ovy doesn't play a two way game. The only reason Crosby and Ovy get soo much media is because there pure goal scorers and have been Rivals before they the NHL, because they played against eachother in Juniors. When Ovy gets into the Penalty kill then I will look at him differently not to mention Ovy takes over 500 shots a year, 50 goals with 500+ shot attempts, sure your goin to score lol

@QUINTANBASKETBALL Towes has done nothing to show why hes worthy of the Selke, he wasn't even a finalist last year. Towes is right now a mediocre player that has some defensive capablilties. Datsyuk is on way higher level of game than Towes will touch as long as Datsyuk plays in the NHL, Towes takeaways last year were below 50, Datsyuk had over 130, and had more blocked shots and the list goes on. Production wise, Towes better up his numbers because he never broke the 80 point mark lol.

Hes not like Ovie and Cindy where the whole team counts on him. If he wanted, theres no doubt he could. i don't care what team your a fan of you respect the greats. Lemieux, Kovalev, Yzerman, Roy, et...you respect them. Cindy & Ovie get a lot of points sure, but Dats is definatly the best all round player there is.

Crosby has been injured for a few weeks now but the amazing thing is he is sitll top 5 in points. This year pavel has played 38 games and has 41 points. Crosby has played 41 games and has 66 points and is a plus 20. Pavel is a plus 13. The stats dont lie. Pavel is a great player, but crosby has become a better player. Not to mention crosby plays with 3rd liners

Crosby's first year in the nhl at the age of 19, he recorded 102 points. Also Crosby was the center for the first line while you can look at Detroit's lines back then filled with Yzerman,Fedorov,Larionov etc. All star players who got a lot more time. So starting at the third or fourth line net's him a lot less time on ice.
Also they get like 14-17 minutes game time still compared to Crosby's 20-23 minutes.

While crosby plays 20-23 minutes with 3rd line players BUT still manages to put up more points and a higher plus minus than datsyuk. 14-17 minutes with all star players is just the same as playing 20-23 minutes with 3rd line players. Crosby makes players around him better. Datsyuk is good, but not that good.

@Nubbiee It's true Datsyuk didn't start as good as Crosby but I'd say he's easily on par with him, not on offense but as a two way player. It's only a question of preference, I'd pick Datsyuk for the all-around but for pure offense I'd pick Crosby but like Brett Hull said: Crosby? please...

@Demandred02 Crosby has proven him self to be an incredible 2 way player. Watch him play and then tell me different. Who cares what brett hull says. Crosby is almost half way to brett hull's point production in his first 6 years. If you line up every GM and ask them Crosby or datsyuk 100 percent of the time the GM goes with crosby. He is 23 and dominates the NHL. Datsyuk is 31 and is losing his game. And again, you want to talk about defense? Pavel + 14 crosby +20. And he plays more minutes.

@Nubbiee People have to remember that Datsyuk didn't his career as a 1st line center on a shitty team like Crosby. Datsyuk got to the NHL late on a stalked Wings team that was dominating the NHL. There's no way they would have put him ahead of certain no.19 who was pretty good at the time. Also, Datsyuk was drafted at 20 not 18. He was unknown unlike Crosby who weas the poster boy since he was 15. Datsyuk has a better allround game, it's a fact. It's more than +/-.

He leads the season by a long MILE in takeaways every year, and he's also one of the best face off men in the NHL. @SovereignVoid the points do matter. think what made gretsky so good? yes he saw the ice better than anyone, which datsyuk does very well, but the reason gretsky is the "great one" is because he got 200 pionts a season. so who do you want on your team. crosby, who will bring you 50 goals and 100+ points or datsyuk, who will bring you 30+ goals and 80-100 pionts while dazzling the croud. you go with crosby cause he will get you more points . 50 is more than 30 no matter what way the come.

@gred2877 look how crosby does against datsyuk and zetterberg. he got what 2 maybe 3 points against them in both playoff series? crosby is in the east, there are three maybe four good teams in the east, the west has much more competition than the east. plus its not hard to get points when your team is on the power play every time he steps on the ice. look at the take aways. take aways lead to goals, even if pav doesnt get the assist. youre too simple minded to look paste the points.

Stop trying to make excuses as to why Datsyuk's point production is NOTHING compared to the likes of Crosby, Ovy, Malkin. Those three players are MILES ahead of Datsyuk. All three of them are even better at puckhandling, Datsyuk's best atttribute.... The only area that Datsyuk even compares to Crosby or Ovy is defense.

@tbwj21 if you seriously think that any of those 3 have the same puck protection skills as Datsyuk your sadly delusional. and the reason Datsyuk does not put up the points those guys do is because the Red Wings play a team first enviroment, they had at least 10 players with 10 or more goals last season, not many teams can say that. Datsyuk is the embodyment of "Team First" look at all the times hes passed an otherwise solid shot to someone else.

@tbwj21 Crosby is better than Datsyuk on offense, though not by much, however on the Defensive end of the ice, Datsyuk is miles ahead of Crosby, making Datsyuk the most well rounded player in the league. Datsyuk has been in the running for the Hart Trophy, Crosby has won it. Datsyuk has won the Selke Trophy, Crosby hasnt even been in the running.

@tbwj21 wow that's is just so incredibly inaccurate. Dats is not as natural a goal scorer as crosby, ovie or malkin which is why he's not a hart finalist, tho he is a point per game player. But he is by FAR the best puckhandler in the nhl. He's also one of the best defensive forwards and the best at takeaways. Dats stickhandling is the absolute best in the league, if only there were more clips of all his stickhandling that didnt lead to goals (best ever? puckhandler not saying player).
