My first response to the Amaechi coming out story was "Who the hell is John Amaechi."

It says a lot about the state of American athletics when even a player with a fairly obscure player with a career that was not exactly notable faces controversy for coming out after he retired.

It also shows just how much athletes are capable of doing away from their sport. I hope John inspires a lot of other people.

This just shows that we all have a long way to go towards creating true equality.
