The obvious response from Ignatieff should have been (something along the lines of) "Mr. Layton, I was crossing the country to speak to ordinary Canadians to hear from them first hand what they want from their government. In addition to representing their interests in the House of Commons, a good MP goes out to listen to their constituents so that they know what's important to them". Baffling that Ignatieff's strategists/speech writer didn't see this one coming from Layton.
I was quite surprised by Ignatieff's performance in this debate -- outside of this moment, he didn't perform too badly, but it all sounded horribly scripted. Much of the time he was sticking to talking points that were clearly not prepared by him (I feel that he was essentially given a script detailing exactly what he should talk about during the debate). Why didn't any of his script writers prepare him for this question? Layton asked nearly the exact same question to Dion in the 2008 debate.
LOL @ this part of the debate. Though I didn't agree with all of Jack Layton's political views, and didn't vote for him, his frankness and spirit will be missed.
I fucking hate Ignatieff, he's just a Money Hungry American bitch. I can't believe people WANT him in OUR Country. He's evil and his platform makes me be in shame for our country. Canada is better than that.Layton should of won by a landslide. People should of watched this Election stuff. The Debates the Rallies. Instead of voting for Harper and not knowing what you're doing to your Country.
@pingramnet i wish the camera was on Harper when Layton tore Iggy a new one, :D, i could just see what he was thinking, like a school yard kid jumping around flicking his hand saying "ohhhh snap, owned bitch yo ass got fucked up" instigating a fight :D.
Layton has come to the table guns a blazin!! Hes battling hard while everyone else sits back. If he makes it may 2nd. i think your gonna see this same agression with the follow through as PM. We may just see a interesting next 4 years!!
Canada free yourself and vote Libertarian, so i could move back if USA becomes a socialist police state under the Neo Cons and Neo Libs like Obama and Bush.
@augerrusty Libertarians are against corporate welfare as well, they believe that business should not have the high taxes they do now, they also believe no subsidies and no tax breaks for an exclusive business. they believe that every business should have a fair chance to do well in the market. Also with workers rights they believe goverment should stay out and let the employees strike if their employers treat them bad and let the 2 handle it, they are against the taft hartley act for example.
And you also have no plan for the poor and the under-privileged. Remember Bakunin, "Liberty without socialism is injustice and privilege, socialism without liberty is slavery and brutality."
you stupid fucks, michael's attendance record is low because he was busy touring the country on his big liberal bus, meeting and greeting hundreds of canadians every day. jack layton is a pathetic wuss and that was a low blow on his part
Did you count the number of time Ignatieff is using the word "democracy" during the debate? Incredible for someone who justified torture and "even the violation of rights" in his "Lesser Evil" article of May 2, 2004 in the New York Times. he says: "to defeat evil, we may have to traffic in evils: indefinite detention of suspects, coercive interrogations.." Pretty alarming from someone who claims to be a human right activist!!!
For those who wonder why Harper was away 46% of the time is because he's the Prime Minister! That means he has more important issues to deal with such as the economy, national defense and traveling extensively to deal with national and international leaders! Iggy on the other hand is merely an MP and has no excuse! Liberals say "oh, but he was talking to Canadians!" So what? That's not his job! His duty is to represent the constituents of his riding not preparing to "possibly" become the next PM!
@tdotcityfour16 Right on man. Like or not, Harper needs a majority to do the job right otherwise he has to spend his time and energy on these two punters trying to stop him for doing what Canadians elected him to do.
@BOULDERDP canadians didn't elect him to do anymore than he's doing. minority government, and thank god it is. look at all the stuff he's gotten away with as it is, imagine he had total power? might as well change canada's name to oceania
Jack Layton made a very good and important point. How on earth did he become Ignateff became the leader of the Liberal Party? He should be fired for being even a member of the parliament! I despise Harper and Conservative, Ignatieff is just a complete opportunist and a joke, NDP will never win. I think I'll just not vote at all this time. Garbage Canadian politicians
@telecake If you don't vote at all, then Harper will win his majority, and we'll all be fucked. Instead, use your vote strategically, to oust Harper. And on the point that the NDP will never win, it's actually beginning to look like a possible NDP opposition, what with the incredible momentum of the past week since the debates. Anyways, rather than throwing away your vote, or not voting, try the catch 22 solution, to fell Harpy. catch22campaign(dot)ca
@telecake wow, i'm extremely disappoined in you as a canadian. apparently you don't care what harper does to our country, do u realize that if harper gets a majoroity he will probably get rid of collective health care. this is a serious thing.... vote ! damn it! and get him out

Amazing how such a lazy bullshitter was able to get acclaimed as a major political party Leader after being in the country for only a couple of years of his adult life. Must be some serious New World Order muscle behind this guy. We'll see how well the Liberals are "Standing on Guard" for Canada by how long they follow this jackass.
@SilvoKnight CBC reality is their own. Harper missed 29% of the votes but that's because he's Prime Minister and can't be in the house all the time. Ignatief has no excuse other than his perception that the Commons is below him.
I'm a Red Tory. Ya know; the kind that dislikes market monopolies; the kind that tends to be more anti-American and pro-Britian; the kind that favours local communities over centralized government; etc. etc. I think I'll be voting for the NDP for the first time in my life. The tory party of old is long gone. The current Conservative party is just a manifestation of foreign, American republican values such as individualism and market fundamentalism, as opposed to communitarian values.
@MrEthekyaa The current Conservative Party represents REAL conservative values of the free market and individual freedom. The values you describe are essentially socialism (communitarian values?!). No wonder Joe Clark was an epic fail - today's MAINSTREAM Canadian believes in individual choice. You are not a Mainstream Canadian, but rather an extreme-leftist in disguise.
@crawto201 Since when did libertarianism and free market fundamentalism become part of our constitution? Those things have been imported from south of the border. Typing "real" in capital is not going to make them any more Canadian. Moreover, calling people "extreme-leftist" because you disagree with them is not going to get you more votes. I think you need to brush up on your Canadian history because you can't even distinguish between communitarian conservatism and socialism. Sad and pathetic.
I thought Layton did the best job overall. A real shame that the Canadian mainstream media virtually shuts out the NDP from political coverage...everything is Harper and Ignatieff, Harper and Ignatieff...the CBC and other networks need to remember that there are THREE major parties in Canada, not two—that’s in the States! I’m voting NDP! Down with Free Trade! Let’s get our economy back!
Jack finally said something sensible with sensible timing. "Most Canadians, if they don't show up to work, don't get a promotion". Iggy, looked like he crapped his pants underneath his facade.
@gundamWWW LOL. He never said he was Tommy Douglas OR Woodsworth OR Broadbent. He's Jack Layton and he's comin' to GIT ya. Oh yes he is!! LOL When the Liberals give us back the 250 MILLION dollars they stole from us in 2004 maybe then you can talk. Until then the Liberals will remain the corrupt gang of theives they have always been known to be. Trudeau, in fact, destroyed Canada. We still can't get rid of the Quebec albatross he tied around our goddamned necks. Iggy got OWNED....get over it.
Trudeau was a fucking traitor and the main reason the rest of Canada is sitting on our back right now. Next time we try to become independant don't rush inside to show us how you love us. Fucking hypocrite
@RastaForces LOL....hey RastaFart....the election's over. Didn'tcha hear? Stephen Harper won. He got a majority. Stop living in the past. Put yer dick back in yer pants and pull up yer zipper. Move along now, ya hear?
This cracked me up, I have to admit. If we're scoring points here, Layton won by a mile, even if I won't vote for him. He makes a brilliant point here, but he should have gone deeper. Here's a guy who wasn't even an MP before he decided to run for leadership. He figured he'd skip all that pointless service crap and get right to being the prime minister. Say what you want about Harper and Layton, but they've both put some work in as MPs. And then he doesn't even show up? Pompous ass.
