Up until the early fifties Hotter's voice was absolutely fabulous. Unfortunately, his stereo recordings date from a later period in his life. By this time his voice had developed an unfortunate tendency to wobble on sustained notes. His recordings of lieder bear witness to his beautiful voice, but generally his lieder interpretations do not carry the insightful interpretation required in this genre. They do serve as examples of great singing. He was much better in opera than in lieder.
Was there ever a better Wotan? The question needs no answer. This man sang the God like a God, and then could spin out a song of Schubert, Brahms or Wolf with the same interpretive skill.
@ApsisApocynthion My comment is amazing singing from Hotter and appalling conducting from K, listen to the strings overlapping and sliding between 4.00 and 4,10, no idea where the beat is or what he's going to do next. Big thick gloopy sound. I am not yearning for Solti or Keilberth, but some degree of precision would be nice.....Yuck.

Hans Hotter is a little tired, his voice too, but Wotan is sad here.
