  • Great movie but some of the comments on here are crazy. I'd like to know what "oiling up ones snatch" has to with "Imitation of life"?

  • When it comes to this movie I like the 1959 color remake. That starts Juanita More and Susan Kohner alson that has Laner Turner and John Gaving and Sandra Dee making her debut.

I have seen this movie since childhood and decided to watch it again today. It is just as powerful today as it was back then. Did you all know that the 1959 remake was a box off hit, bring in over six million dollars. It is said that they spent one million on Laner Turners wardrobe alone. Imagine that.

  • What does you alls sexuality have to do with this movie. I find this offensive, please post it else where. Just saying, ok. Repent!!!!!

  • wow i did not know that there was an earlier version of the movie i watched as child very interesting to watch--i like this version as well

  • I didnt know there was an original version of this movie.. thank you :) Loved the one with Lana Turner.

  • I prefer the remake with Lana Turner. I am not politically correct in anyway but this version was so terribly racist , the relationship between Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers was not a personal one but more reminiscent of master and servant, it wasn't as personal as the one shared in the remake. I couldn't feel for either of them. The saving grace in this one was Fredi Washington as Peola. She was outstanding, my heart broke for her, one could feel her torment.

  • @twilson11208 Sounds like YOU feel more comfortable with the 59 remake even as nature of the relationship as had been portrayed in the original would have been much closer to reality.

Glad you don't get to sign off on the content of flicks!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: You're correct to say that the original would be far more realistic in terms on how the 2 protaganists would have related to one another given the era. You're incorrect in saying comfort had anything to do with my preferring the remake over the original. I couldn't buy the pain of loss shared by Colbert when Beaver passed on since the two interacted superficially with each other. In the remake, the two shared their experiences and showed much more concern with another.

  • @twilson11208 Just a tad bit more, the walls that separated them were still very much in evidence.

  • @tomkes100douchebag: A tad more? Why not pretty much the same? Let's just say I appreciated the relationship exhibited by Turner and Moore vs Colbert and Beaver. The death bed scene in the remake had me crying uncontrollably to the point where I took a valium just to go to sleep. In the original which I own as well, it was Freddie Jackson's performance that touched me deeply unlike Susan Kohner (hateful bitch). So each film holds a different value for me with respect to the characters.

  • @twilson11208 Everything you have written represents your personal reaction to the film and I have been focusing on historical aspects of it, particularly Hollywood's treatment of social issues of the day.

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Everything you say is your personal reaction to my personal opinion. The historical aspects you threw in were simply a means in which to validate why you felt the original which in your opinion was better in the event my sentiments were initiated by some politically correct knee jerk reaction. Relax, I get it.

  • @twilson11208 OMG, you MUST have daddy issues.

FYI, I enjoyed the second version more because Lana Turner is simply lucious. Now that completely fucks you up in the head. Don't engage in self-injurious behavior.

  • @tomkes100douchebag :Careful now, don't let your brains go to your head. If I recall last, I never asked you or even cared if you liked one version or not. I merely posted a comment and you like a little bitch imagined you were some renowned film critic imposing an unasked, pleonastic piece of wasteful dribble. BTW, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the remake simply because of Lana Turner's beauty. So the tilt factor was fluff over substance? What a mooncalf.

  • @twilson11208 Blah blah blah, the more ya spew the more ya proove ya just an empty headed windbag. Your "analysis" such as it was, reminds me of the know it all brat who everyone tries to ignore, constantly chiming in. "listen to me, listen to me." Of course invariably you hear, "yes dear, now run along!"

  • @tomkes100douchebag :zzzzzzzzzzz.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz......zzzzzzzzzzzzz...zzzzzzz

  • @twilson11208 ha ha you're such a bore, that's what a wild cock would do to ya too!

    SPINSTER HAG TO BE

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Oh goodness, you're about as witty and riveting as a dial tone. Not that there's anything wrong with it but are you gay?

  • @twilson11208 Suck my TRANNY cock, callme Chaz you filthy cunt!

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the ...oh I'm sorry...that's right...you'd prefer to land on it ass first..don't cha?

  • @twilson11208 You and Lana would both fuck tranny Chaz and ya know it!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Oh please, STOP! Remember, you're a facsimile of what you'd like to be. Sorry rugby, but why would Lana or I settle for "An Imitation of Life" when we can have the real thing? Why would any woman settle when we can have the likes of John Gavin or Chris Hemsworth...girlfriend puuuuuuuuuuhleeeeeease. Give it up, you're no match. Here I am thinking I'm corresponding with Mary, instead I get Butchie. Brush up on your Freud and read up on Penis Envy. You have serious issues.

  • @twilson11208 Seriously, ya know ya wanna fuck. Maybe ya can expand your horizons and find a tranny like Chazzie. Right now ya life is a pure hell of boredom.

  • @tomkes100douchebag:No siree, you're giving me the laugh of my life. As for Tranny, sorry kiddo. Men are far too precious and far too beautiful to resort to something so deviate and twisted as yourself. You hate yourself, trying to be something you are not and never will be. Brush up on your Freud and read up on Penis Envy.

  • @twilson11208 You should brush up on what being a total bore is. Tell ya what: Take your clothes off and describe yourself.

  • @tomkes100douchebag : I can't be all that bad if you still continue to reply...evidently something is tickling your...um..err...hmm..oh well...whatever it is you call it...Tell ya what, lets not and say we did. Sorry for the hackneyed expression.

  • @twilson11208 You are one witless wonder. Back to more important things. Describe yourself naked.

  • @tomkes100douchebag: I'm witless, you're dickless and never the twain shall meet.

  • @twilson11208 So if you're witless how would you be able to tell that I'm dickless? That big fat object I'm driving through your twat right now? It aint nuthin, just relax and let it do it's thing. We'll help you come up with a word for it later after I've had my fill of ya! Promise we won't call it a dick.

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Wow, you're real swift aren't you? Didn't you want me to call you Chaz also a "Tranny" dick? We call it deductive logic. Sorry, not the real thing...you're dickless and you know it.Sorry, you can't do anything for me at all...has to be the real thing. Now with that said, you sound like a reasonably, somewhat verbally astute individual, must you really resort to this kind of gutter talk? I mean really, especially in a forum to discuss a film so beloved by many? Fuckin' bitch.

  • @twilson11208 Yep fuckin can be a bitch. So let's do it again, bitch!!!!

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Didn't know we did anything to begin with save me indulging your childish remarks. You need a man....badly. I can give you some makeup and fashion tips if ....oh that's right...sorry Chazzy...never mind. Have a good day.

  • @twilson11208 we could do a threesome if ya want honey. Are you sayin you want me to take the dick while ya watch? Perhaps ya want both of us to do ya a good double fuck! Lemme know!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Miss Thing, please. Get a life and stop indulging in porn sites. Find a good tranny like yourself you can share notes with. This queen has no time for deviates like you.

  • @twilson11208 This is ridiculous, you look for your men on a Fannie Hurst site, you found the real deal and now you play hard to get. What gives?

  • @tomkes100douchebag: LOL!!! Sorry kiddo...deflect..BIG FAIL!

  • @twilson11208 Be careful lovey, too much Fannie Hurst can make ya an old spinster!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Beats being a tranny.

  • @twilson11208 Maybe not. Let's debate both sides. You in?

  • @tomkes100douchebag : You are so full of it..now stop...I just checked your photo and you're a guy...probably gay ..as I don't know of any straight males who would even have an inkling of who Fannie Hurst is. I'm not saying that as a negative but more so as a matter of fact. Miss Thing now please let me alone and move on to your tricks or whatever it is you do to preoccupy your time other than being a nuisance to those on the web. Snap!

  • @twilson11208 My fat juicy cock is NOT posted all over the net liar!! Now what about the debate spinster?? You riskin complete dryout a ya snatch cause ya choose not ta use it. Tranny embrace life not run away from self. Tranny say, high risk shit? Deal me in cause I wanna live 'fore I die. You, spinster, can't wait fa death. Who live richer life?

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Unfortunately it would be a moot issue as I'm far from being a spinster, so to be perfectly frank. I wouldn't be able to debate on their behalf, i.e. spinster. So being that as it may, go boast your fat juicy stub to your boyfriend. Out of curiosity, do you feel male or female? Do you wear skirts or just plain ol' butchie? Snap!

  • @twilson11208 Listen spinster, stop spinning and diddle, you'll like it. When you and I renezvous, if you really want me to ring up a feminine side, SNAP! And it's done. Remember, a snatch is a terrible thing to waste!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: If you really believe that then why not go fuck yourself? Snap!

  • @twilson11208 I hope that "snap" is cause ya gyro still got the snap in the gyro and not cause it broke from spinsterin' honey!

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Not to worry honey, I'm not you. Snap!

  • @twilson11208 every time I hear snap, I just know ya diddlin good! Our therapy is workin!! Moisturize that snatch baby!

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Not to worry honey. I'm not you. I wet naturally. Eats at you don't it?

  • @twilson11208 I'm glad you're on top of the situation just as I wish it were I.

  • @tomkes100douchebag: Just think, and its all my mine to enjoy.

  • @twilson11208 Again, I'm glad you're on top of the situation just as I wish it were I. And again.......

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Ran out of ideas huh? Figures. Now go back and see if you can fit back into mommies shoes and dress.

  • @twilson11208 They fit!! Now take your finger out your snatch and let me insert my big fatty!

  • @tomkes100douchebag : Oh pleeeeeease. The only fat thing you could possibly make claim to is your girth as well as your stupidity. Now shoo little fly.

  • @twilson11208 we could do a threesome if ya want honey. Are you sayin you want me to take the dick while ya watch? Perhaps ya want both of us to do ya a good double fuck! Lemme know!

  • This is definitely the better version. The remake is only a remake. This is a very emotional movie.

  • I love both versions

  • that baby is so cute

  • Lovely movie, although I favor the '59 version more. It has more feeling to it in my opinion. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thank You So much for posting this! I never knew about this one. My mom made me watch the 1959 version when I was younger, no doubt to show that no matter what race you are, you need to respect your mother because you only have one and when she's gone that's it, especially if she is a good mom. Much love and respect to all of the good mommies out there! I hope to be one one day :)

  • I Prefer this version. I think this version is so much better

  • This movie was so sad. If she was my daughter I would have been so hurt by the way she would have treated me.

  • I like this version..kus sarajane is an ugly ass name lol

  • @B3auty5150 I found that name to be better than Peola, lol.

  • I know Claudette's little girl is supposed to just be a headstrong toddler but man, she made me so annoyed in the first 15 minutes I don't know how her mother could be so patient with her.

  • Our whole nation's history is based on the invention of race--and the inequality that resulted from it. this movie is just another example of it, with tragic dramatic results.

  • To hell with this, the color purple, the help, and all those other mammie ass movies Sarah Jane can eat dog dick.

  • interesting movie especially for the time period it was in

  • @supremezen77 bro you must want some attention...

  • the little girl is cute<3

  • Definitely better than the remake.

  • I heard about this from reading The Bluest Eye I think...

  • PRETY LADY

  • don't wanna go to heaven want my quack quack.so cute.

  • sooo i was watching the remake, fuckz that, they concentrated too much on the white family..this movie was intended to have the black family as the main characters.

  • This is definitely better than the remake.

  • any1 know if i can get this version on dvd in the uk? ive looked and can only get region 1

  • thanks for posting this! All along I thought the 1959 version is the original one and I loved it. I'm gonna watch this one.

  • Too bad they could not find any decent actresses back then. It really tests one's suspension of disbelief to think that anyone in their right mind would ever pay to watch this woman act. Much better than the obsenity they made in 1959. That one sure portrays women in a bad light. Where there is racism, sexism is not far behind. Baa baa, say all the sheep who who take joy in degrading others and themselves!

  • This movie was intended 2 releave whites of the responsibility for the ills N which the part that they r responsible 4 N race mixing-by establish'g a 1/2 white biological father of Peola instead of a full white man as her father who left out of the picture & had no other part, than sperm donor N Peola's life! Who answers 2 this behavior, the 1/2 white? NO! the full white father should have been portrayed & answered 2 the reason of his absence N Peola's life!

  • A very misleading and stupid movie about mixed racial ralations & circumstances! Portrayed from racist white screen writers. Where is the White dad of Peola, instead of the 1/2 white father as this movie portrays, which is a false reality in mixed raced circumstances!

  • Is this where the "Barney Song" came from?

  • i like this better than the remake.

  • @SCOTTTHOMAS That's alright too. Again, this movie was absolutely wonderful to be made in the time period it was in. I was surprised at how much the remake was able to stand right above it to me of course.

  • @SCOTTTHOMAS I agree

  • this is a case where i think the remake is better than the original

  • @thechristykay Agreed. I thought the 1959 version was better than this movie and bit more powerful. That's not because I saw that version before this one though. I re-watched both movies back to back a couple of times afterwards and each time the 1959 version takes the win. But this movie was really good too. I think the later version proved that a remake can be better in some cases and stand on it's own without relying on the original.

  • @harriettewinslow especially that scene with Mahalia Jackson singing at the funeral *chills* i cry every time

  • That lil girl is too adorable

  • this version is not as good as the 1959 version..ugh cant stand black and white videos..its jsut scary to me.

  • @SoYahYah I love black and white movies and photographs. Sometimes color can be so distracting, you can't see the true depth and meaning of the focused point and what it actually contributes to the setting around it... LOL. That is such a true statement, but I wasn't talking about racism right now.

  • @2441883 i like photographs that are black&white too. I guess i take back that statement. I do enjoy some black and white films. I was watching this movie late at night and I guess i got scared. I actually saw this one movie that had so much color it was distracting and bad i forget the name. some 1970s movie. i get yr point

  • @SoYahYah I also know what you mean as well, especially if the film is scratchy or too dark. I guess it depends on the physical qualities of the film (or "what-have-you"). That baby... what a pretty little girl.

  • @SoYahYah why be scared of it? if it was good enough for your grand parents its good enough for you too!

  • @windstorm1000 because it looks creeepy! lol

  • ”What's mommy got to dooooo?” cute!

  • i watched this in my african american hist. class, it was definately a great movie!!!!!

  • Peolas mother has enough money, she could have sent her daughter to britain, france or switzerland. Then she would not have do hide her identity, even if noone asked, nobody would have seen this as a problem.

In Austria in the period of austro fachism in the mid thirties, a black american studied in Vienna and was well received, and became something like a son in law of the dean of the institute of chemistry. I wonder how racism got that bizarre in usa, like collective madness

  • interesting movie

  • I just love the way they spoke back then.

  • CAN ANY ONE PLEASE UPLOAD THIS MOVIE CALLED (I PASSED FOR WHITE 1960) I really want to see it and i bet alot of other people want to so if any can put it on youtube that would be great.

  • I like the (1959) version of IMITATION OF LIFE better with Lana Turner and Juanita Moore.

  • It was brave on the part of the filmmakers to make this movie in the 30's or the 50's..considering the institutional attitudes of the time.

  • @LUVJONZ99 there were man other films like this. I actually read it was kind of popular, almost a genre itself to make movies about blacks passing as whites.. but kudos to both cast and crews of each versions. this movie is def a classic and something future filmmakers like myself look up to

  • @SoYahYah thanks for the information.

  • @LUVJONZ99 yea look up pinky if your interested in this topic..its a good one too.

  • AHAHHAh i liked the old unerversial opening, and the kids funny, this is intresting to watch thx for the upload

  • thank you for posting peoplewho dont like them shouldnt even comment ,,and just enjoy and be glad people like you take the time to upload..havent got the hang of that yet,,thankyou

  • Absolutely one of the most profound movies ever made. What a time when movies really had substance and real acting.

  • maybe for people that can't HEAR....just a thought.

  • @ykrussell Yeah that's a good reason. The subtitles can come in handy in that case.

  • @BlueLeopard200 It was like that when I uploaded it.

  • @BlueLeopard200 I'm a bit hard of hearing and so I always watch my movies with the English subtitles on. Otherwise, I'm bound to rewind and decipher what people say sometimes. Subtitles make it easier for me to follow the plot without having to stop it every so often.

  • This was the best version ever of this film!!

  • Powerful movie OMG, They made her out to be the typical mammie and the daughter the tragic mulatto.

  • @babyfods18 YES -sigh- So racist, but the movie wouldn't have existed if people werent. -le sigh-

  • I don't wanna go to heaven i want my quack quack!

    xD

  • @Lyn7721 omg she is so cute and innocent ^.^

  • Thank you for posting! As a representation of light-skinned Blacks, it's an historical oddity, to be sure, HOWEVER, if it's taken as what it was, a flawed but interesting depiction of the struggles of a light skinned African-American woman, it is a pretty absorbing tale.

  • @RETROGEMS are you kidding me?

  • @sheri451 it's a old ass movie, stfu.

  • This woman ought to know you DO NOT leave a toddler in a bathroom with water around, she could have drowned in less thatn a minute.

  • beatifully crafted film, reflecting events that happend in a black persons life during that time era.

Sadly not many people know the woman starring in this (Fredi Washington) was nothing like her character, and refused to pass as white, because she could never understand why no one let her be a strong black star.

I think this film was also a message for the audiences at the time, although i don't think they ever really understood.

Fredi portrayed her role wonderfully. & is an inspiration.

  • Thank you SO much for the upload. I have the movies but it's so old that I can barely watch it without it glitching. U r the best!=)

  • @ChuckleBunny90 You're welcome.
