@bobszvetics1 XD You said "Who's Jack Benny I dont Know." OH. Duh, u were quoting the episode right?!! How could I forget that line?!! Well srsly tho, u do know who JB is, rite..?
Barbara Pepper occasionally appeared on "I LOVE LUCY" in "bit parts" during this period as well, as she was one of Lucy's close friends [they were "Goldwyn Girls", when Eddie Cantor appeared with them in Sam Goldwyn's "Roman Scandals" (1933)].
It was great. While harem-costumed Miss Bara was still popular in 1927, I wonder how many folks still remembered her in '54? Well, maybe they laughed due to Barbara's uncanny delivery!
This was one of Jack's earliest filmed episodes, first seen on October 31, 1954; he preferred to appear "live" doing topical material on alternate Sundays, but he began filming several episodes a season to allow himself time off or fufill other engagements (and taping the last season of his radio show at the time). This was adapted from a radio script that slightly exaggerated how he actually met Mary {Sadie Marks}- she DID work at the May Company as a salesgirl in 1927 before they formally met.
Good background explanation! Did you catch Mary's plump friend? That's Barbara Pepper a fave character actress on Lucy's programs (e.g. hysterical maternity ward nurse) but would become 'Green Acres' 1st Doris Ziffel. Wonder what happened to the 'stocking tester'who did the splits? Oddly enough, Sadye(later Mary) was 18 and Jack was 33 when they hooked up in the May department store (in Chicago, NOT LA) but were 45 and 40 by this depiction. And,yes, she was a cousin to the Marx Brothers.
I love this radio show!

The great thing about all these performers was their ability to create great skits without the use of sleaze or sexual innuendo. True talent.

On Jack's "walk"; Phil Harris once joked, "You could put a dress on him, and take him anywhere!".
