This is...NEVER PJ , The tone in the guys voice is nothing remotely like PJ's. Even though pj as many different vocals styles its not him. good voice on the singer though
Thanks for the clarification. I am not all that familiar with Proby's work, other than the hits. Most Cricket collectors come up with Proby as vocalist on the track but it didn't really make sense to me for the reason mentioned in my earlier posting - Naylor had already been signed up as vocalist, so why try out other people. Thanks again
It is widely recognised in Crickets "circles" that it is indeed Proby. He was born on 6/11/38 making him 24 when this track was cut. He signed for Liberty ( as were the Crickets) his first 45 was "Try To Forget Her" in 1961. "Face" was included in the RockStar Crickets CD "Ravin' On From Califormia To Clovis. The only problem with Brian's statement that that the Crickets were searching for a new vocalist being they had already recruited Jerry Naylor in that role.
P.J. Proby has listened to this song. He has never heard the song before. This is not his voice and he has never aspired to be "a Cricket". This is definitely not P.J. Proby singing.
@manjadolan Many thanks, Manja. The problem is solved with the comment from PJ Proby. Now I wonder who the singer is? And since it is a good song I think I, at least for a while, will keep it uploaded here on Youtube.
@Lindgren33 It's a fantastic song.Supposedly sung by Ronnie Smith who replaced Buddy for a few weeks after his tragic plane crash on the tour. By 1962 Ronnie had serious drug problems & in October of that year hung himself at the age of 24.
THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT P.J.PROBY HOW CAN A PERSON LIKE BRIAN MATTHEW BELIEVE THAT ?? To upload it without any reaction ....??? Not the first time even "Probyans" can´t notice the difference....Strange
No way that is PJ, unless he recorded it when he was 16 - it just not his voice (too mellow and smooth), although some of the inflections and the fast vibrato are similar (as was his desire to go into a Gene Pitney impersonation on some high parts) ... and this is coming from someone who is still convinced it WAS PJ singing on "Give Me Love" by Rosie and the Originals !!
The vocalist could be a guy called Earl Sinks.For a while he was the lead singer with The Crickets

P.J. has said it's not him but suggested it could be Trini Lopez or even Peter James. It's another mystery!

@BearGrove Welcome to my channel! No, it isn´t Proby - but a very good song, don´t you think?

@BearGrove
Brian retracted this claim on the show on 29th October, saying the contributor who sent in the story was normally reliable.
