I think Joaquin's behavior IS most likely an act for the documentary Casey Affleck is filming, but if it's not then I think it's most likely drug/alcohol abuse in order to cope with the guilt he still feels about his brother River's death. He once told a magazine that he had begged River to go out the night he died, and that River didn't even want to. I think Joaquin really beats himself up about that.
