Nizoral works on the scalp. Then you can use it to also wash the face. I personally use Head and Shoulders mixed with nizoral and it works well. Although the H&S stings a little on the face.
Believe it or not i used an acne treatment for my seb dermatitis and it worked a treat. I got it sent over by mama nature from england. It is called teenage dream and i used it after reading someone on a forum had tried it for seb dermatitis. I will spread the word about it because if it has got rid of mine and surely it must help others also.
The most perfect product that absolutely eliminated my SB (as long as I kept using it on a daily basis) was the ZNP soap bar. For some odd reason, this product has been backordered for about 6 months now. I tried an alternative that I found on Amazon, and it didn't come close to ZNP. Now I use an alternative shampoo that contains 1% zinc for my face, but again, not as good as ZNP.
I have had SD my whole life. I do have flare ups, also. I was on a medicated shampoo as a child, but I cannot afford it now. The doctors never told me it was yeast, though. They said it was your body's natural oils called Sebum building up at such a rate as to cause your excess skin to be unable to shed properly. Now I wash my hair everyday twice and blow-dry. If you leave your hair wet it will cake the dead skin onto your scalp.
Mainly, it's our diet that needs to change, imo. Wheat breaks down into acids similar to dairy, so usually if one has a skin reaction to dairy, wheat will also be an issue (wheat only, not all gluten) and red meat is bad. Yeast eats sugar, so keep the sugars to a minimum. Coffee really makes it flare up for me, as does chocolate (big :( for that!), any bad sugars like soda, cookies, candy...off the list. MACROBIOTIC diet is probably the best, but you have to be able to cook at home.
I've had sd for about 30 years. Just 2 years ago, I found out exactly what it was. I read different accounts of people having luck with a vegan and wheat free diet. I tried it. When I quit wheat, I saw a huge improvement (huge!) The only problem is that wheat free was really hard to stick to. Now I'm trying kombucha and B vitamins. Borax helps for sure, as does Apple Cider Vinegar, it keeps the fungal growth down. Since SD is a skin growth, auto-immune disorder, we need to heal our skin...
One last thing I forgot to mention. Sun is your friend. You probably realized that you feel better during your summer vacation at a beach. You have a sea caused peeling effect for the skin dandruff and the uv-rays help to keep the microorganisms causing your rash at bay. If you have a severe outbreak look for creme/shampoo with aditional salycilic acid, it will have that same peeling effect i described earlier. F.e. in germany there is a shampoo stieproxal with CO and Salycilic acid
In short: combine antifungal shampoos with antifungal cremes and maybe steroid cremes. Look for Ketoconazole (Ket),Ciclopiroxolamine (CO) ,Selenium Disulfide (SD), Zinc Pyirthione (ZP) and Hydrocortisole(HC - steroid). I cycle through shampoos with KET, CO, SD and ZP. And use fungal creams with KET and CO twice a day. HC creme kickstarts the healing but has side effects in thinning out your skin so drop it after a few weeks.
During my treatment i dropped the HC creme (sideeffects) and the SD shampoo (it smells). Right now I wash my Hair with Head&Shoulders (ZP) 3 out of 4 times and use a CO shampoo the 4th time. I use a Ketokonazole Creme on my skin where the rashes used to be once a day. That stupid disease plagued me for years until i started researching. Very good summaries can be found by google-ing for: aafp sebborheic dermatitis
neosporin cream applied frequently worked for me. after it cleared up, its never come back. I used this on my face. My hair on the other hand, I still haven't figured out.
For the hair, use Hand and Shoulders Clinical Strength. My dandruff completely disappeared. My face, I haven't figured out. I'll try Neosporin as you suggest. Thanks!
@joellie2010 My doctor told me to use the Ketocanzole until the condition subsided. Make sure to continue to use it even if the results aren't within the first day. I have been using ketocanzole for fours months off and on, depending on the condition of my sd. I don't have a specific soap but I like Head and Shoulders with selenium sulfide as a shampoo. Hope that Helps!
@joellie2010 The bottle says to use it every time you shampoo, but I tend to do it about 3 - 5 times a week. Find a couple of shampoos that you like and put them in a rotation. To me shampooing is probably the best way to keep your sd down.
I forgot to mention, after getting wet I find it important to wipe your face of the flakes and put on the cream. If nothing is working for you after that would be either to go to your Dr. and ask about light treatments or try to spend as much time exposing your sd lessions to the sun for as long as possible and see what happens.
When I Later I used it again I had great results. After a couple of days my face was smooth, had no flakes, and was back to the way it used to look. The only issue with it was that I get sd on my forehead and with my tan now it is slightly offshade with the rest of my skin. I would go to a dermatologist and try to get something like ketoconazole cream. If you don't want anything to aggressive you can always use an antifungural like lotrimen but that doesn't work as well.
@rtreatman THANKS I did try the ketocanzole.. works only short time.. tell me please how long you are already using this and if so in combination with which soap.. take care!
I am a young adult and have been suffering from sd for about 4 years. When I first got it It would only appear after i got my face wet, so I started putting baby oil on it. This lasted for about a year and a half until my face rebelled against the oil. After that I went months without solutions. Then my doctor prescribed me ketoconazole cream. The first time i used it, my face felt horrible so i stopped but it got rid of my sd in a few days after one use.
Scalp psoriasis and seborrhea dermatitis of the scalp can be difficult to tell apart. They share similar symptoms as itchy, red, scaly skin. usually the scales of psoriasis are thicker and drier in appearance than the scales of seborrhea dermatitis.if you have scalp psoriasis, you might have mild psoriasis on your elbows, knees, hands or feet or may notice subtle nail changes. The american Institute of advanced medicine has your solution. theaiam.com
