Similarly, he had free will, he could be right then and wrong the next day, and his recording likewise. It's a compelling tune though in light of some of the things that haven't changed since his time, like white bread bias in the media. The things he was protesting were essentially in spirit the same things that OWS is protesting as an organization. That's what musicians do sometimes...
In my opinion, those that think that the song has a specific message are missing the point about media - on the one hand this is a historic moment and there is no question that Gil Scott Heron had a specific kind of revolution in his mind when performing. On the other hand he says some things that are not "historic" (in the "it only happens once" sense of the word) and that are more universal.
Let all people from all places know, the truth will always be the truth. For those who choose to ignore it, let them live in their bliss. All false prophets and their sheep will eventually fall into the sea. The revolution is still alive...as is the truth, it will never die.
Each one's perception is his own reality. Therefore, if there is an "ultimate truth" none of us can know what it is. We each have our own ideas about "the truth" ... according to our past and present experiences. One's individual journey along life's winding roads are reflected in one's belief and opinions.
Without Gil, there would be no Chuck D, no EPMD, no Wu Tang, no NWA, no Saul Williams, no Bejamin Zephaniah, and no Jay Electronica. This is his legacy. We're all living through Gil's revolution.
UK is waking up. Next anti cuts protest 30th June Trafalgar Sq. If you have slavebook type in "Today's students are tomorrow's pensioners - STRIKE FOR OUR FUTURE"
Great poet but a lousy prophet. In fact, the revolution WILL be televised, live on CNN and every other 24 hours news station, interspersed with analysis from `expert' commentators. I haven't been a media monitor for 25 years without knowing my business. : D
@TWO7rabbit Um..CNN is not a real news station. Nor is any other American news media outlet. What they show is edited and the narrative presented fits the interests of the corporations that own those media outlets. Even the ppl they interview are biased with the analysis they present. So maybe an updated title should read - The Real Revolution will not be televised.
@TWO7rabbit you may know your business, but you missed the meaning of this piece completely. It was not a prophecy, it was a wake up call to our people at the time
@TWO7rabbit you do not understand the revolution he is talking about. unless you have a magic camera that can somehow record an individual's internal revolution of mind, perspective, and attitude, then the revolution is unfilmable. the revolution is live, and it defies technology.

@TWO7rabbit think deeper... there will never be a technology or a medium that makes what he's actually talking about here obsolete...
