Trouble is I watch this and I know it was the last bit of TV to ever feature Marc - within 2 weeks he would be dead, another 2 weeks and he'd have been 30, a tragic loss, but thank God we'll see him again someday - for now Marc left the most amazing legacy of music better in my opinion than any other "act" ever, from Rarn to Dandy KALMIYH
He is a genius, goes without saying....this song is a classic, love the performance...but , as a woman, can't keep my mind off of how hot he is here!!! And that little gold cross around his neck, for some reason, makes my sweet little panties sooooo wet, (I'm almost ashamed to say...ha ha..don't even know why that does it for me, but it does!!!)
I remember fondly seeing Mr. Bowie perform live in the late 70's, seems like only yesterday. He was great then and is still rocking today. Thanks for sharing this video.
ledgerdeathshit -That's because he sometimes surpasses sex and links into something beyond being human when he performs. I suspect he used sex consciously in his performances at that stage of his career.
Bolan and Bowie had the same spiritual interests at one point.
I could watch hours and hours of these two together, would have given my left arm to have seen bolan play and would be tempted to give my right to see bowie play again, two classic acts if not the best!!
Thank you for posting and please I'm obviously not the only one been brought up with their music meaning so much..
Bowie & Bolan have a long history. They were Mods together in London in the early 60s. Indeed, Bolan has been described as the first Mod. Bolan called his child Rolan and Bowie used the same rhyming model calling his son Zowie. Great performance
The song is in the key of E here. I've never heard it in this key before. I wonder if he performed that way or if it's just the sound in this particular upload?
I see so much sadness in Bowie's eyes..Very touching performance of heroes. Marc and Bowie play so well together. Sadly this all have to come in end :(
this pair would have been the birth of comic rock if they had gone on to do that said album together.... the sense of fun they are having is deep and out of it. Marc may have "settled down", but he still needed half the stage to bop while he played!!
This is classic musical footage. This was Bowie's first public performance of 'Heroes' and it is the ultimate performance of the song in my opinion. The one take recording of these two old mates singing 'Standing Next To You' (that they had just written) shows all the love and healthy competitive rivalry they had for each other. Bolan falling off stage at end is so symbolic. These two have got to be the greatest talents to come out of England, post Beatles.
@kalini The live version from Musikladen at Bremen 1978 quite clearly is far, far superior to this. In fact his vocals on this, the Bolan show, are pretty poor tbh.
@pollenprognoosi I do agree. But I have no idea why you mention this as it is not the point I made. The performance of Heroes on Bolan's show isn't very good.
This was the first time I ever heard this song. I think Bowie premiered it on Marc's show. He had never sounded so passionate and I was blown away. I absolutely love the rawness of this version. The next day I had to go out and buy the single. There's new wave. There's old wave. And there's David Bowie... thus ran the advertising for this record. (Even now it's hard to believe Marc died so soon after this was recorded)
This performance of Heroes seems so lackluster. I'm not sure if it's Bowie or the band-which seems to be playing some sort of weird Karaoke variation of the song-but the power and energy that usually sits behind a song like this is missing.
There's alot of history on that stage. Not just the obvious of Marc & David. Herbie Flowers on bass. Top session man, played with mid seventies T.Rex (probably on alot of their vinyl as well) AND worked with Bowie on "Diamond Dogs" and, of course, did the double bass track masterpiece "Walk On The Wild Side" with him, Mick Ronson on Lou Reed. Just thought I'd share. ;)

Bowie's studio albums from the 70's sound terrific, but I'm disappointed for the most part with his live vocal performances - this vid included. Most of the kids on American Idol could sing better than this!
American Idol kids belt out songs like a fog horn but that doesn't make them superior cause they lack in everything else...vocals aren't everything you know
Totally, but he had a great ten-year run in the seventies, so we should be grateful for that. And the "alien" that possessed him was likely some spaceship with a record label sticker posted on its side that could make him the most money from Let's Dance onward.
bowie too!!! i'll give him 'til after let's dance -('82?) - (i loved let's dance - i'll give him blue jean, too) .... and then i'll give him "i'm afraid of americans" and then "vitality".... the rest...? well... he's always been with me (and i'm sure will always be),,, this version of heroes is dull... it is usually so much more than this - more visceral, more touching, more important...
They were fantastic together. I remember watching this in my sitting room envigorated with the passion in DB's voice that he seems to have lost in later years. There I was in the jubilee year far too young really, but watching this with black hair dye on my hair enlightened with the gift of glam inspiration that pushed me to carry on with a little bit of Marc in my heart............forever and always xxx
I remember making sure I got home from school in time to watch this............Bowie...........what can I say!......oh Bolan was cool as well.......my older brother was a T.Rex fan. But come on Bowie, shit he was the Nazz!
To add more grim irony, he taped his Christmas duet with Bing Crosby later that month. Two weeks later, Crosby died of a heart attack after finishing a golf game in Madrid.
yeah, i heard that Bowie thought (or still thinks) that those he cooperates with/works with always end up dying, like with Marc Bolan and Bing Crosby.
Somewhere I also heard once Bowie got his forutne told/prophesized and was told that He, Jimi Hendrix, and Marc Bolan were mystic phenomenons that would only last a few years on this earth. it was laughable at first, because Hendrix was the only one dead, but when Bolan died, Bowie got real nervous about it. Luckily it was never fully fulfilled.
Heroes is a beautiful track as wel as heart felt cuz althought he hasnt got the greatest voice ever he doess put a lot of power in2 it and plus i think it works as a tribute song later that year cuz Bolan died a week after. Bolan rocks 2 but it was so brief.great x
"Bowieaoke" - this could be the latest next big thing - imagine a bunch of midwestern girls and Japanese Businessman in a club doing "Bowieaoke" or should that be called
I have played this song so many times - I know its every track, and I must say the instrumental backing as well as the vocals IS off. But the overal effect is still the precious Bowie
qwertyloop, How can parts of this be "wrong"? He wrote this song, and he has the right to arrange it and sing it however he wants. It's fantastic in my opinion. It would be awesome even if he was being backed by someone playing a kazoo.
