I think everyone should remember that this was a song that Suede recorded for a War Child album called The Help Album that consisted of other artists including The Manic Street Preachers covering other songs. Don't knock them too much. "It'sss alll for cheearrity mate!"
It's a reasonable cover, but the voice simply doesn't match the lyrics. Robert Wyatt's has an plaintive urgency that this version lacks - just my view...
i believe in one's power to live and inspire and mutate (just kidding). suede is one of the soundtracks of my life when i dream and write my thoughts out. they seem like people in my room who watches as i die when i make a rhyme. they are GOD. you know when you listen to their songs it's as if everything ended yesterday and you do not know it. it's as beautiful as that.
let's listen to their songs to make the world a round thing.
So I gave Suede's rendition another try this morning, and it does sound better after hearing it a few times. I think the way that Robert Wyatt sings it warmed me up to Suede's style of singing this, but still not completely convinced.
I like this version, i love Robert Wyatts version, Brett Anderson is just a bit too middle class to carry it off for me personally. Still an ok version though. Just not quite right.
I'm impressed by this version. I really love Robert Wyatt and Costello's ones. But what did those guys is not bad. Respect !

this sounds quite a lot like Five Years, a song by David Bowie
even the style, instrumentation and vocal styles are similar

Love the song and love Roberts version. But I like Bretts fragile take on it. Would be better with just a piano. It's ok as you say.

I LOVE Elvis Costello, don't get me wrong, but somehow I've never quite loved this song as much. And now I do.

Whatever happened to Suede? Elvis' version is the best. Steve Buscemi rules. Fargo!

That'll be Steve Buscemi then?

Of all of the people who have covered this song, Suede's is my favourite.
Elvis's is wonderful, of course, however Brett's vocals and the band's smooth delivery are first-rate.
Thanks for the post.
