If you lift the revs and the noise disappears then it is just the VVT dephaser on the inlet has failed (common failure). Car is running race cam setting at idle so will run rough and the rattle is the dephaser rattling back and forth. Best to get it replaced with cambelt change. If the car is well serviced it is unlikely to be tappets.
Mine did exactly the same. Spat 2 spark plugs out a month later. Cost me £100 to have the plug holes helicoiled. I was lucky the cylinder head, valves and piston heads were fine. Check the plugs if you haven't already.
Check the spark plug wires, it sounds for me like a electric problem.
