Hey old etho, Tree's with bonemeal follow a simple formula. The tree first checks if there is enough light for it to grow, Then it see's if there is enough space to grow, Then if there are any obstacles in the way. Following these rule's permit a tree to grow. To guarantee a large tree make a 3x3x2 cube with a block missing from the bottom of the two high wall, Then use bonemeal on the sapling in the middle. Hope this helps you old etho in the future.
