@meforgodforall Very few checked badly. The groove we ran down the middle really seemed to help. But I'd do it right next time and dry them first. The cabin was sort of spontaneous. On the other hand, dried logs are much harder to peel the bark off, and if you do it beforehand they'll get black with mold and have to be scrubbed with bleach water before using.
Wow, very nice location! And I thought mine was in the middle of nowhere... Good pitch on that roof for heavy snow, looks like you thought of everything, but when the snow covers the solar panels... uh... what then?
lol you guys look like you have so much fun doing that even tho its amazingly hard work do you work throught he winter and spend the spring summer and fall in the mountains untill winter comes or is it a year round thing?
Sad to say I haven't spent time up there this year since I have a job (at the moment!) in the lower 48 that pays well so I figure I'd better make some money while I can. The typical Alaskan works 18-hour days during the summer when tourists come around, then takes the winter off. Lots of them vacation somewhere warm during parts of winter when it can get down to -50F in McCarthy. Eventually I'd like to spend summers up there. March is also a great month with snow, sun, & temps in the 30s.
At the time I bought, the University of Alaska was selling plots of land in a "subdivision" for residential use. The nice thing is they came with financing, so i only had to put about $2500 down. They were about 10 acres and about $2500 per acre. They are all gone now, but in the new few years the University will open up more land in McCarthy for sale, so they say. Outside of that, there is stuff for sale but prices vary.
Well, the boards were just a temporary measure so animals would not get in. I always intended the logs, because they have insulation value and I like the way they look.
I could have just insulated the boards, but they were not fitted or lapped in any way and the air and water went through the cracks. I still have to decide how to do the gable ends. which at the moment have boards with tar paper stapled over them.
