Im with ya on that one, but they would have to rebuild everything back up again, like service facilities and hire an army of people to maintain them, which would make alot of jobs for people but would cost the railroads lots of money and skyrocketing insurance rates doesn't help either. Oh and 3751 is an oil burner.
I think if steam engines were brought back they would be lower maintinence. They would probably have a presurised oil system, and the fireing process would probably be computer assisted. The pressurized oil system would not be a difficult task, I've roughed up a few designs, nothing revolutionary, but they would work.
That would be cool. I bet the cab would probably in the front of the locomotive like a cab forward steamer to have better visibility I guess. Do you think an electric arc furnace would work? like a smaller version that comes from a steel mill?
I would like to have the cab in the back, it looks cooler. The electric arc I think would be a problem, The only way i would think to power it is steam, but you cant loop a system like that, to produce the amount of energy requierd to heat the boiler would be the same amount of steam to run it, it would cancel itself out. Every reaction has an equal and opposit reaction. Its a good idea, Im not sure how it could work though, might have to think about it for a while.
Yeah a cab in the back would look cooler. Now you mentioned that the fireing would be computer controlled. Now you also have to remember that water has to be injected into the boiler regularly to keep it from blowing up. And the boiler has to be washed also of sediment. Would a fireman be on board to control the water and boiler blowdowns? Or could it be controlled by computers and sencers and have a manual over ride just in case the sensers went wrong?
I would have pretty much everything run by a computer, but i would have somone on board to watch over it, nothing super fancy, but I would have sensors to tell when the injectors needed to be turned on, or when you need to make the fire hotter. I like the Idea of having everything mechanical, it more efficiant it would probably have a series of sensors, It doesnt have to be a program, you could make it work with electrical switches and thermometers to see how hot the fire needs to be.
I would run it off of what ever would burn, and what ever was the cheapest, Im sure cooking oil would work, Just need alot of it, If it burns its cheap then its good.
Yeah your right cooking oil would definitly burn but the problem is that you cant get the used stuff in large enough quantities, it would cost more just to go out to every fastfood restaurant and retrieve it. Would the boiler be any different? One expensive thing about steam locomotives is they use ALOT of copper tubing inside the boiler and that costs plenty of money. I don't know if they could use another material such as steel.
Nice Video! I'll have one from the other side posted in a little while. One minor correction though; this is the Soledad Lagoon, the Batiquitos Lagoon is north of Encinitas.
I plan to try to bring it back.

That would be a good idea. Also do you think it could run off of used cooking oil? Instead of expensive oil?

I think new boilers use steel tubes, This one may have steel tubing, I have not hear about copper tubing, I never new they used copper tubing.
NathansBackwoods 2 years ago
Really? Well I guess I was wrong about that then. Oh well it would be great if steam was resurected again anyways.
SouthernRR4501 2 years ago
I could be wrong too, iv just never heard of copper tubing in boilers.

Why not run it by the greatest computer of all time which is the brain?

I wonder whatever happened to the ACE 3000 (modern coal fired steam engine concept)?

well from what I've read the oil shortage came to an end and the project was scrapped. though I think they should start it up agian just in case.
