Political choices sold by lowest common denominator are what stand between the problems of the world & what scientists & engineers could do about them right now. Don't drape your lack of curiosity in moral frills. Or your resentments.
@Richdelacruz2000 LOL you're complaining about scientific achievements? If I were you I would complain about the money that goes into defence and war-mongering. Atleast with space exploration you're generating knowledge and BENEFITTING human kind rather than killing people.
Your right, its simple, ignore all the drug problems our world is plagued with, all the starving children, a doomed economy, and focus on space exploration, just what the would needs, a space coffee cup.
go mankind!!! i dont know if your living in the same world as me but we must fix yourselfs be for space exploration will ever be a reality.
@Richdelacruz2000 Might I remind you that despite efforts for thousands of years, poverty and other hardships have been reduced, but never eliminated. Even to do so, in theory, would take a massive amount of resources. Meanwhile, some engineer looked at a fuel tank the right way and taped some plastic together and bam! Astronauts won't get burned tongues from coffee.
Not to mention, our only hope of supporting a greater population is interplanetary expasnion, so... you're wrong. On every level.
@EpimetheusLC our ONLY hope of supporting a greater population is interplanetary expansion? if that were so then we would be doomed.... People like you are the reason problems don't get fixed. You think that just because a problem will take "massive" amounts of resources means it's not worth solving. Did you know the amount of money spent on the War in Iraq was enough to end world illiteracy. Thats a real fact btw not an opinion.. don't believe everything people tell you...
@Nunew1234 You're an idiot to be honest. It's inevitable in the future that the Earth will be become a deathbed. It's only a matter of time before we seriously attempt to colonize other planets. Solving world literacy won't do jackshit for that. Did you know military power is what runs the world? Like hell the most powerful countries care about ending world literacy you moron. Oil, money and weapons is what runs the world, unfortunately.
hey guys stop hating on him this guy is mind-blowingly smart and I would know because I no him and his family. He is One of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
you are in space... its an enviroment where you are expected to make concessions. No gravity, so then... no cups.
At least when its in a bag its not going to spill no matter what mistakes you make. the point is to drink the coffee yes, not drink it from a plastic psuedo cup because it some how reminds you of home.
anyways.. rant over. redundant plastic space cup... NFTW.
@CyberNeticRodent they simply adapted the same concept to the fuel tanks if you listened carefully, this is just to explain just some of the ingenious simple solution's nasa has come up with.
@Serveck Actually, if you listened too and correctly understood the video yourself. This is what they 'already' use within rocket fuel tanks (0:40 & 0:58) and this novelty space cup was inspired from it.
@vodka721 Pencil shavings, graphite smudges and broken pencil fragments can damage sensative equipment. Eraser shavings also will drift around with the other items.
@allensanchez1990 the ship is pressurized and there isn't much free space inside of you so there really isn't a lot of room for stuff to "float" inside you.
@InferusExitium straw in an open cup won't work in microgravity. However a straw shaped like that cup was (teardrop) might actually work in an open cup.
@InferusExitium It works for the liquid in a straw, but no further. If you've ever drank a slushy and ended up sucking out a 'void' in the slush, you've basically experienced how a straw works in microgravity. When you drink from a straw, you always create a void, with regular gravity, that void is likely to be filled by more liquid, since it's all at the bottom of the cup. In this case, air can easily mix with the liquid, and you create an air pocket.
@druxka There's air in the spacecraft right? And the air pressure will be just right or else the astronauts wouldn't survive long in the cabin without a suit.
@FrigidFlare The americans used decades to develope a working space pen which could withstand no gravity, they spent millions so the ink could reach the bottom of the pen.
The russians used a pencil.
Same thing here.. America take years of developing a way to drink liquid while the russians used a straw.
@iDontbreakPS3 Try looking up your factoid sometime. Both space programs, US and RU, used pencils, which were a constant danger to onboard equipment. The space pen was a definite improvement. Also, have you considered that hot liquids through a straw in zero gravity pose a risk? At all? Have you noticed at all that Russia and the US have been collaborating for years? That NASA astronauts have been drinking through straws for years, and this makes it possible to do without? No? Oh well...
@FrigidFlare They do all the time, the bags got straws to drink but they searched a way to drink it from a cup like on earth and that is their solution.

@Bluedash3r nope, the second you swallow, the start a wave of peristaltic movement until your food reaches your stomach. It's also the reason why you can drink whilst doing a handstand.
