nice banjo work! I bet john would be proud of your rendition....I definately here his influence in this tune. It would be fun to have him accompany you on this sometime....huh? :) thanks for the music!
I also heard this song for the first time performed by John Specker - he's amazing and has such a strong presence. I'm taking banjo lessons and this is one of many songs I plan to master...Hope all is well
Nice playin. The banjo really cuts through. Also enjoyed your Round Peak, Part 1. Workin on my fretless a bit. It was frustrating to not have the frets to get the pitch right (at first). I'll keep pushing. Thanks.
Nice work Tom. I'm lucky enough to have played with Specker a few times over the years. Even called a dance once with him on fiddle. Between the crooked tunes and his enthusiastic thrashing it was a challenge but a great time.
Nice job, first time I heard that was about 30 years ago when I came across an LP of the Camp Creek Boys, I believe Fred Cockerham was on fiddle and Kyle Creed was on banjo.
That Camp Creek Boys album has been a constant companion of mine for 6 years. John Specker introduced me to it, and I've just about worn a hole in the CD. Great music!
Have you heard this tune as performed by the "Rockridge Boys"? You can download several tracks (free) of theirs at musicDOTdownloadDOTcom, search by artist. Pretty raw but also pretty refreshing.
Yes, this is a very thin calfskin head. I haven't adjusted the head at all yet, but with the humidity increasing I probably will have to tighten it a bit.
It's been trouble free thus far, and I'm thinking of using them on my other instruments.
The neck on Jason's banjo is a bit James Ashborn-ish . Great plkaying Tom . All the best , Guy

really love this - what tuning are you in please?
johnh123abc 3 years ago
Sounds like plain old A-tuning:
aEAC#E. Same as standard G capoed up two frets, this guy just didn't bother with the capo and tuned right up. That's what I do too.

I keep coming back to your performance of this , can't get enough. Do you have a solo CD available. I'll buy a bag of them for Christmas gifts.

Should also say that John Specker is something to see. Those in the Northeast might be able to catch him at performing at your local Farmer's Market.

That's a calfskin head, right? Wonderful sounding banjo. Do you need to adjust the head very often?

Sweet! Is that a Jason Romero? I love the slotted peghead.

It sure is a Romero. I just got it a couple of months ago, and I absolutely love it.
