  • @easyscore Umm no. Ever heard of Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Landanian Tomlison, or Eric Dickerson? These guy would ru circles around those slow ass linebackers of that era. Sayers is overrated.

  • A healthy Gale Sayers was the greatest back ever

  • Butkus was the best of the three, and maybe the best of all time. Sayers would make cuts in the holes, run through tackles, and change speeds. He would slow down when they had an angle on him and then speed back up when they got close. No other back like him, ever.

  • If the bears kept George Allen, he would've surrounded those 2 studs with good players, and they would've been up there with the Pack and Cowboys. Instead Allen went to LA and DC instead.

  • Both of these guys belong in the Hall of Fame without question. Playing ability and stats are only part of the equation. These guys go above and beyond that. And the fact that they played for an overall mediocre team just enhances their status. They had to be great to do all this while playing for a terrible team. Team wise you can only do so much with what you've got to work with and the suit and tie management of a team is more the determinant of the overall makeup of a team.

  • The "greatest linebacker ever" and one of the "greatest running-backs ever" on the same team, yet they couldn't lead the Bears to a SINGLE playoff run the whole time they were there??? LMAO

    These 2 scream "overrated".

That's what happens when you play for a big market and:

    a) can make big hits

    or

    b) can juke a couple of players

I guess winning is not that important when you have those ^^^ qualities.

    How sad.

  • @QBDogKiller Football is a TEAM sport. Note that 2 players are not a team. There are 2 players on their team and, quite frankly, after their rookie season, the teams they faced essentially zoned in on them. They couldn't throw the football, so they knew the ball was going to Gale, and it was hardly possible for Butkus to make every single tackle of every single game. Btw, I've seen you trolling on other vids.

  • @rorank

In football, when you are a TEAM LEADER on offense (Sayers) and defense (Butkus) and are considered "one of the greatest ever" at your position, you are held accountable for the team's success and failures.

If those teams had won championships thanks to a higher talent level, the media would be gushing on how "Sayers and Butkus carried that team to a ring".

You can't have it both ways.

Btw, I can tell you never played football before.

You wouldn't understand what I said.

  • @QBDogKiller Barry Sanders never led his team to a single playoff win. Reggie White with the Eagles is a pretty good example. The Eagles were pretty well off, but never got past a conference game. Eric Dickerson with the Rams, Colts, and the other teams he was with were none too succseful either. These guys are great PLAYERS. Not necessarily great LEADERS. But hey, I'll just take you're word on it and disregard people who've played in the actual NFL.....

  • @rorank

    1. The players you mentioned GOT THEIR TEAMS TO THE PLAYOFFS.

    2. They were the ONLY great players on their teams.

    3. In some cases (Sanders, Dickerson) they got their teams to a championship game, ONE STEP AWAY from a super bowl.

How does that compare to Sayers and Butkus who were:

    1. From the same draft class (1965)

    2. Played together roughly 6/7 years.

    3. Were the leaders of their respective side of the ball.

    4. AND NEVER GOT THEIR TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS.

    -Nice try

  • @QBDogKiller Sanders got the Lions to a wildcard game, not a championship game. Dicerson got his team to a conf. championship (None of which he won). In Sayers 4 good years, he made up about 1/3 of the Bears total offense. At any given season, Butkus had either 1 or no pro bowl defenders in the roster to work with. The year Sayers was away, the Bears had 2 rushing TDs and about 650 rushing yards. Dick Butkus was their only pro bowler besides their punter.

  • @rorank

"Sanders got the Lions to a wildcard game"

    Not exactly.

He got the Lions to the NFC Championship vs. the Redskins during the 1991 season (after beating the Cowboys in the NFC Divisional Round).

-Good job, try doing some research next time before posting your dumb bullshit one here.

(That's the problem with YouTube, most users are fucking retards.)

  • @QBDogKiller Btw, BLOCKED ASSHOLE

  • @rorank

    WTF???

That's how you defend your intellect, by "blocking" someone???

    Go back to school kid.

  • @QBDogKiller Sanders didn't get them there, the team did. Do you know anything about the '91 Lions? Erik Kramer, Herman Moore, Brett Perriman, Mel Gray, Chris Spielman, Ray Crockett...I could do this all day. You keep telling people to do their research - try taking your own advice.

  • @sd31263

You have 3 Pro-Bowlers at: WR (Herman Moore), LB (Chris Spielman) and return-man (Mel Gray)....

The rest are a bunch of clowns (including a QB who threw for 1,635 yds. and 11 TDs...not exactly Dan Marino. LMAO XD) whose names you thew out there to sound like you "know" something.

Congratulations dipshit, you just proved to be a competent Wikipedia user. You can apply for a job at McDonald's with that kind of skill.

Don't make stupid arguments to "sound" smart. Doesn't work

  • @QBDogKiller It takes more than two players to take a team to a championship. Sayers and Butkus were surrounded by mediocre players. The '91 Detroit Lions were a multidimensional team.

    -Nice try.

  • 4 Packer transvestite fans dislikes this!

  • DICK BUTKUS?

  • RE: Comment about "Dean Jones", it's Deacon Jones, of the LA Rams, played on their defensive line with Merlin Olson.

  • I would go with Forte and Urlacher at least they got to a superbowl. Dickhead Butkus and overrated Gales Sayers did shit!!

  • @MegaJohnnywadd Yeah, shut the fuck up bitch.

  • @MegaJohnnywadd

It's called individual accomplishiment you MORON! I've personally seen both eras. That was real football back then. Urlacher would have pissed his pants trying to play in those days. He is NO Butkus! Get a clue pussy.

  • @JBILLINI Shut up old man! You fucking old wrinkly bastard..Urlacher and Forte are already more accomplished than them. I don't give a fuck what era. Butkus played in an era with shitty backs. he never faced guys Like Earl campbell, Payton , Sanders, Dickerson, Emmit Smith, Peterson and on and on. Oj or Jim Brown were the only good ones. Other than that running backs sucked compared to the backs in the last 30 years. So fuck you PUSSY!!!

  • @MegaJohnnywadd Ok, how many pro bowls has Matt Forte had? Out of 9 years, Butkus has had 2 Defensive Player of the years. Out of 10 years Urlacher has 1. Butkus has had 3 more All Pro seasons than Urlacher. P.S. Urlacher has gotten run over way more times than I can count.

  • @MegaJohnnywadd funny thing is forte wasent on there superbowl team and yea dick butkus and gale sayers did nothing k man if you say so...you know nothing about football at all.

  • LOOOOL @ 5:17-19

  • this guy could juke!!!

  • 0:10 is that elephant poop on the field? can't be sanitary

  • half those hits would be fined these days...this is the era when football players were football players, not over hyped and over paid whine asses.

  • DICK BUTKIS WAS A STONE COLD LINEBACKER OOH WEE HIS HITS IS BAD REALLY SUPERBAD I WOULDN,T BUMP HEADS WITH HIM LOL.

  • To give you an idea of how great Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers were. They didn't let the fact that they played on bad teams in Chicago in the late 60s and early 70s. Stop them from being great players.

  • Go Bears this Season!! All the way to the Super Bowl!

  • In all honesty, you can break down the dreams and aspirations of all football players by having them choose which of these guys they like more.

If you'd have sat me down at a young age and asked who I wanted to be, I'd tell you I respected the smooth and flash style of Sayers, but I wanted to be tough and ruthless like the Butkus.

  • lol. 3:26.

  • they never made the playoffs

  • @brucedavis76 Yeah, too bad too. They really deserved it.

  • Can you believe it? One NFL player points out to his teammate who Dick Butkus is... and the moron has no idea what he's talking about! Well, that' is exactly the mentality of many of today's athletes. They are quite ignorant!!

  • a very very great player, thank you Gayle for all the great memories...!

  • Of the 3 great Middle linebackers in Bears history:

    Butkus=Toughest

    Singletary=Smartest

    Urlacher=Quickest

  • @Gwitfu90 Idk if Urlacher is quicker than Butkus.

  • Wish Urlacher played pissed off all the time like Butkus did.

  • 2 of the Greatest ever....Butkus best LB ever no doubt

  • Dean Joes said he he wanted to inflict as much pain on those he tackled and he has the nerve to make a poem about Butkus.

  • @MIKECNW

Dean Jones? The actor in those 60s Disney films? He wanted to inflict pain on people?

  • The two best draft picks ever? Hard to argue, although injuries ruined them both.

  • BUTKUS OF THE 60'S

LAMBERT OF THE 70'S = THE GOLD STANDARD OF THEIR ERA'S

SAYERS THE BEST RB I EVER SAW....

  • BUTKUS OF THE 60'S

LAMBERT OF THE 70'S = THE GOLD STANDARD OF THEIR ERA'S

  • LAMBERT!!!!!!!!#58 BUTKUS!!!!!!#51 THE BEST EVER!!! after that Lawrence Taylor - Ray Lewis and then who the hell will remember you? but in a 4-3(i grew up playing) #58 and #51 ! Love L.T.,know him, lives less than a mile from me,but he was a hybrid DE/OLB-Blitz crazy!lol Ray Lewis ,a machine. Tough,Big,Fast,Strong,Mean, yet for all that said-he has NEVER put the team on his back and controlled the game.I saw Lambert,L.T.,Dick Butkus do that quite a few times.Watch Super Bowl X. 'nuff said

  • what is bill Crosby talking about really??

  • 2 totally class acts....Sadly, its an era long gone.....Too bad all the showboating and garbage goes on today and is rewarded by people paying tons of money to see these P'sOS. We are reaping what we sow, and that is not a good thing. Society is reflected by these worthless, arrogant, greedy, bastards that play today. Thankfully, we can watch old school games. I don't even watch ANY of this era's sports. F it.

  • LOL, 3:26 is hilarious. Who knew Butkus had a sense of humor.

  • 3:26 ... Hahahahaha!!!

  • just think if butkus and sayers did not get hurt sayers would there records would stil would not be broken

  • Butkus... what can you say. Best ever? I think so.

  • Two good men. Two great players.

  • The thing that I find most impressive about Gale Sayers is his ability to make his moves at full speed. I've not seen any runner since then that could do that. If he had the advantages of the medical/surgical technologies of today, who knows how many more years he could have played.

  • @ChiTown7721 Devin Hester can make those full speed moves too. Pretty cool cause theyre both Bears.

  • @ChiTown7721

O.J., Tony Dorsett, and Barry Sanders could do the same. All great, of course.

  • @uhmfar Sorry pal... these guys played many of their games on artificial turf... where if you're running straight and making cuts, it gives the runner an advantage. Sayers could do it all whether he were playing on artificial turf, natural grass or MUD!!! In my book, he is the greatest!!

  • @ChiTown7721 Well yea he had Butkus chasing after em on the practice field lol I'm not a Bears fan but i live in Bear country and these guys are legends here along with Sweetness,is funny that im a Packers fan but guys I admire most played for the Bears

  • @ChiTown7721 --Right. Sayres may have been the best talent wise ever, next to Jim Brown. Those 6 TDs on a muddy field---unbelievable. And in 1968, he was averaging more than 6 yds per carry until the devastating knee injury. He was finished after that, but even with a short career, still goes into Hall. 2 unbelievable players in same rookie group.

  • All of you who doubt either of these players being hall of famers hush your mouths. Talent is not the only thing that makes a hall of famer, you have to be smart. Gale may not have been the most talented but he was definately one of the smartest.

  • Finally, a highlight reel where you can actually hear the commentaries, rather than idiotic, annoying music.

  • @davidanthonyross I totally agree with you!!!!

  • Sayers only got into the Hall because the standards of entry back then were lower. Today he wouldn't get in. There are dozens of other RB's with better numbers who aren't in the Hall

  • @veryslyfox i agree mostly, but i also think it was alot harder to get those yards than it is today. Today, the NFL favors the offense alot more-alot of the tackles seen in this video would cause tacklers 10,000 dollar fines today. plus 6 touchdowns in a game is pretty rare.

  • @veryslyfox mkjhki

  • @veryslyfox If Sayers had played in a time where they had the medical technology that they have now, he probably could have played another 7 seasons. Recovering from a knee surgery nowadays is not nearly as bad as it was when he played. For most guys back then, that was a career ending injury. The medical technology they have now is a million times better.

  • @ChiTown7721 You can't assume that today's medical technology would have added much to his career. Terrell Davis didn't extend his career after his knee surgery. Stop speculating. All that matters is Sayers career rushing numbers were crap. Even average players Terry Allen and Rodney Hampton had more freaking yards. Sayers should be removed from the HOF

  • @veryslyfox You can't say that it wouldn't have made a difference either, and you can't deny that a player getting knee surgery today is a hell of a lot more likely to make a full recovery than somebody getting surgery 40 years ago. You don't have to get so pissed off. We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

  • @veryslyfox Total career yards alone do not determine greatness. You would be the first "ahh expert" I ever heard stating Sayers does not belong in the hall of fame.

Sounds silly. The fact that he had such a short career and people still talk about him

proves he was something special. Career stats for modern players should be bigger. They play 16 games per season versus 12 or even 10 in the 1950's.

  • @andrewr62 Not to mention the NFL is much rougher around this time period.

  • @veryslyfox Players today also have the advantage of steroids, the use of which is rampant in the NFL nowadays. People don't evolve over a period of 40 years. Also, as comicfanartist1 said, the NFL today favors the offense a lot more. You practically have to pick a guy up and lay him down like a baby not to get penalized nowadays. I once saw a penalty against the Bears because the defensive player "used his weight to push down on the quarterback". All I could say was "Are you fucking serious?!"

  • @veryslyfox numbers ain't everything

  • @veryslyfox It's because sayers was an outstanding player. He had a very short career, too. But numbers don't matter. I guarantee you that Sayers is better than any running back in the NFL right now.

  • @veryslyfox That is the most ingnorant comment ever made!

  • wow...gale sayers and butkus...

ironic how knee injuries took the 2 best players on those Bears teams...

  • Comment removed

  • Gayle Sayers was magic. Thank you for the video

  • "of his time" ? Dick Butkus is the best there ever was.

  • Pat Summerall has that announcing voice. AWSOME!

  • @xxchinookxx You said it, brother. The greatest of all time. THE VOICE OF THE NFL

  • Jesus...Gale Had a fresh lining at 0:33.

  • great video post......butkus was my favorite player when i was a kid.sayers had eyes in the back of his head.....i havent been a bears fan since they got cheap and traded away or released..wilbur marshall...but its good to see the greatest defensive player ever ,again..and the comet.

  • the greatest draft ever...yet, never in the playoffs

  • i think the current bears would be inspired by this video. Well they should be.

  • This should be mandatory viewing for the current Bears!
