i badly cut mt elbow when i was helping my dad cut would on a table saw, my sleeve got coght, im only 13!!! got it so close to the bone 1.5 mm, never wear long sleeve sweaters, 13 stiches, 5 hours in emergency, just weaiting for the nurses, 20 minutes to get stiches
Unfortunately this happened to me on boxing day last year, i cut my right hand index finger pretty much off it was just hanging by the top of the skin, 6 hr surgery and another 2hr 3 months later and its back to normal. but like u say when it happens, ur just shocked as to it happening
@BornAgainEngineer Yep that's exactly what happened, I was cutting some timber into small strips using a push stick with my right hand and as the piece went past the blade it started to flap about on the table, my instinct was to reach over the table to hold it down with my left hand to finish the cut..... My hand got too close to the blade at that point.
I gotta say, after having watched some videos of the SawStop safety brake, I'm fairly convinced it's the way to go to help avoid stuff like what happened to you.
Here's a demo video of it :

The inventor even tests it with his own finger. Brave bastard I say. With something like that, a person could conceivably get away with a little cut rather than loosing a finger.
i once had a wire brush on a drill cleaning the engine bay on my car. the drawstring on my top was tucked in but fell out onto the drill. it wrapped it up until it stuck all the wire bristles into my chin
i work in a cabinet shop and there are guys that have worked there for 10, 20 years accident free before doing something like this, all it takes is one careless moment.
After 20 years of carpentering accident free, I finally managed to injure myself with a power tool and it just had to be a table saw. I'm pretty fucking lucky. Right hand, middle finger, straight across the tip, about back to the beginning of the nail. Broke the bone. I clenched it in a fist and said, "that did not just happen". Well, it did, so I wrapped it up, finished the day(5 more hrs.) and went to the Hpital. Glued it back together, no stitches.
@steventurtle1963 atleast you didnt get what this one kid got at my highschool. he was pushing a board through the table saw and kept turning his head back talking to someone, and right when he turned his head again half his arm went in and threw the blad no joke, his hand bent back and he almost lost it. and almost lost 3 of his fingers.

When making a deep cut that has a forty-five degree angle , or similar, make sure to watch your thumb when that blade pops through at the end of the cut. This i how I ALMOST lost my thumb this Spring. Couldn't help to look at my thumb the rest of the day smilen!
I haven't used a guard on mine for years. I actually performed experiments on my saw when I first had it....experimented with kickback and "pinching". I learned alot about my saw from those tests....most important would be to only raise the blade only as far as it has to be AND make sure the blade and the fence are EXACTLY perpendicular. I don't think much needs to be said about keeping your hands out of the way......
When you get over-familiar with your machines, and make such comments, is when your machines bite back. Don't 'turn your back' for a second, 'cos when you do, they will have you.
Table saws are actually one of the safest saws to use. Just use your guards and spreader or riving knife. Use the fence or miter gauge and keep your hands away. If you're cutting a small piece use a push stick. As with any tool pay attention to where your hands are at all times and make a plan to make your project safer.
never used a table saw before but am considering to buy one for projects. kind of nervous to use such powerful device and possible injuries are almost irreversible.
Hi table saws are so dangerous some stupid guy saying circles can be cut on one I can do it but only because of my experience. You need many more vids like this to make others aware of the dangers. It don't metter a dam to me if all americans cut their fingers off on their table saw but it sure will to someone. It dont hurt at the time if you are not watching but the pain is indiscribable later.
that stuff takes a long time to heal. 8 years now since i cut my left hand on a table saw. cant open and some of my fingers still have lightning pain, still have clawing

So after 20 years accident free, what did you do wrong to cause this? Or what were the events leading up to it?

most table saw accidents are caused because people dont use their common sense. theres 2 ways to use tools, the right way and the wrong way,
its not that hard to keep an eye on your fingers, blade and piece of timber your ripping.
