such a pity that ukraine has never won a team medal, world or olympics, since the breakup of the ussr, because they have such beautiful athletes, yet very inconsistent. i'd love to see ukraine win a team medal
you stupid bitch. the crowd doesn't dictate the scoring. the russians NEVER put it together, in any meet. not at any worlds or any olympics. always have to find something to blame their disastrous competitiveness on!
yes, but the crowd can distract the gymnasts, in a sport where concentration is crucial. the russians are a traditional legend in gymnastics; they and the romanians laid out the foundation for the americans, who will never be a traditional power; just a new one. so if you're a true gymnastics fan (I doubt you are) then you'd respect them.
no bitch, the SOVIETS were legends. the SOVIETS comprised Ukraine, Russian, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and other Republics. The fact that you would lump the Soviet Union with Russia shows your ignorance you stupid cow. Go read a book and get back to me.
So to sum it up, the Soviet Union = EPIC. Russia = massive disappointment. The RUSSIAN team has NEVER put it together in any team event, EVER. Russia does not equal the Soviet Union, so stop talking as if it does. It was just one republic within the Soviet Union, and it was not even the most prodigious at that.
@vontrappster and BrittanyxKila- thats a rude way of saying it, but not completely false either. Svetlana Khorkina has great respect for her country, so when they failed to win, she was probobly just feeling let down. Most gymnasts perform better when there is a lot of noise, however I will agree that the crowds in Atlanta were a bit much. One girl was in the middle of her floor routine when one of the Americans stuck her dismount, and the crowd cheered so loud she couldn't hear her music!
I agree...Americans get into sports like crazy...but its expected...otherwise the olympics wound't have been in atlanta. I also can't wait for 2012...I think Cheng Fei is coming back and so is Shawn, Liukin and maybe Romania can step it up. Looks like Russia is doing good as well.
wow. i never really liked sveta, but now i realize that she was eargly awaiting to be part of the always gold russians. then, when she competes, it goes silver, silver, bronze. poor her.
*bows respectfully* I agree. The Romanian sure know how to produce the greats...2000 and 2004 - they showed ho tough they really are. 2008 wasn't that great but they still medalled! And it was to be expected since they no longer had Octavian Belu --> 2012 Olympics are going to be interesting, after the Romanians and Russians bounce back. I can't wait!!
poor poor russia and romania. russia really should've taken gold in 96. i hate seeing sveta and roza cry. 96 was hard to watch with romania nor russia not winning.
Coz they suck?? The Chinese, the Americans, Romanians and the Russians are the defintives of this sport - it's like the other teams don't even exist. Well...except maybe the Ukraine.
@chuckalababe You're totally right. And I don't even think that the Ukraine is as hyped up nearly as much anymore since Lilia Podkopayeva stopped competing. She was the one who really shined from that country. imho.
@Mikizzle15 Its all about money those countries are poor over there in eroupe. America and China are doing fine they can spend money on gymnastics. I mean you break up the soviet union and that money got slit up too...plus everyone left europe...Liukin was a soviet and so would have been nastia if he never moved to america. It will take awhile but everyone will be back soon.
What!!,russia got what they deserved, USA was solid and deserved the gold. Why is it everytime an american win a medal, it always got to be an issue, FACE IT U.S WON!!!!,dam let it go!!!!
I have to say, the US soil thing was a big issue. America has really bad spectators, and France too. I'm an American and I'm saying honestly, were you guys at Atlanta??? People (Americans) were sooo rowdy and rude!! people were booing when other countries went up (particularly russia and the ukraine) it was disgusting.
Thank you!! I just watched the whole gymnastics thing from 1996 and WOW! the non-American teams had it rough!!! I was distracted by the noise and I was just WATCHING!! Imagine how the gymnasts felt?? And maybe the Americans weren't necessarily the best but the other teams didn't perform to the best of their abilities, considering? Congratulations nonetheless...
@chuckalababe Oh Lord. Nice passive aggressive language there. The US earned their team gold that day. No excuses. Every gymnast deals with noise & if you think any Russian, Romanian or Chinese crowd would not cheer just as loudly if 1of their gymnasts had done the equivalent of the Strug vault (an incredible act of heroism), you're naive. The US won fair and square, they were the best that day. Just as at every other Olympics, the Chinese, the Soviets, whoever was the best that day. Moving on.
yeah i agree it's seriously unfair to boo when other nations are competing, but i must say i was in clermont ferrand for the european championship this year, and the french didn't boo once! they were being loud when france was on though, but that's to be expected isn't it? remember when monette russeau was on in 2005 in melbourne? same thing happened there.
@Selecious EVERY home team has the advantage. Americans were not booing that day, they were cheering because a girl had just stuck a vault on a severely injured foot--that's pretty incredible. American crowds are very good sports in general, and the crowd at Atlanta was loud--just like every other crowd, all over the world. No one was rude. No one was booing.
I attended the Atlanta games, it was not bad as some may say, they may have cheered louder for the americans, but the also cheered for the other nations. I didn't hear a hint of a "boo" when the other nations competed so I don't know where u got that from, as I said the americans won fair and square so don't discredit their gold medal.
I too would love to know the name of this song(s)! I have been told it is "The Quest of Culhruch" by David Arkenstone, but I have heard that song, and the two are not the same.

I think Russia would of won in atlanta if it wasnt for that loud, disrespectful, classless trash audience. svetlana khorkina even said so herself

They were loud, but they weren't booing. They yell "oohh" really loudly when someone falls or make a big mistake.

Romania would have one if they had their key players in 96 look at the all around results. All of them winning metals.

Tell that to the crowd at the recent Pan Am Games. At least we didn't cheer when foreign athletes fell.
