  • 4:15 to the end - one of the best bits of music of all time

  • in memory of Giuseppe Girolamo, the metal drummer died on Costa Concordia!

he left his seat on lifeboat to a child. now rest in peace in the sea, Giuseppe \m/

  • love that snare tone

  • Outro = Greatest solo of all times.

  • "innocence faaaaaaaddeeedd, AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the mirror faaalls behind yooou"

  • James voice was so fucking good then.

Not saying it isn't good now, but.... HNNNGH.

  • @ManMadeGod4 Fucking tell me about it. How the hell does somebody get their voice so high with such a nice and clean vibrato to follow up.

  • @ManMadeGod4 on new most of Dream Theater song his voice is better than ever! :)))

  • 1:05 - 1:20 ---> HEAVEN.

  • All these comments degrading DT's new stuff is unheard of. I look at a song as a whole. As a giant orchestra score. And to me, the newer stuff has such a togetherness and fullness that Dream Theater had at I & W and lost for a bit. Awake is an amazing album, though, just at the bottom of the list.

  • I think all the albums are on par because they all have something awesome about them but A dramatic turn, Scenes from a memory and images and words are a cut above the rest because Images and words was their first with labrie and the songs are DT classics, Scenes from a memory is an epic song/album thing that tells an incredible concept story and a dramatic turn is an awesome comeback after portnoy leaving which shows they're so awesome that they can cut it without him :D

  • 2:20 for eargasm.

  • It sucks that Portnoy is gone, but Mike Mangini is a good replacement

  • One of the best-sounding CDs I've ever heard. The drums are AMAZING!

  • This album is amazing every song is a masterpiece

  • Fuck all the haters of Labrie's voice, one of rock and metal's most underrated vocalists ever!! Before and after his vocal cord issues.

  • @greenfiero1986 Not underrated! He is a good singer but not one of the best of metal! He can do nothing more than what a proffesional can do!

  • @AXLPANOSROSE That's completely stupid...

  • @OneTakeJesus No it's not!I told you!He is a good singer!But he is just a good singer!

  • @AXLPANOSROSE No, you did not tell me. You told somebody else. Wake up.

You're obviously not a singer, nor have you ever sang, I can totally tell unless you're just stupid.

Not every "good" singer can just pull this stuff out of their asses. It is extremely hard to sing in octaves like this. Some people can do it, some people can't. It's not easy. It's more than being a good singer.

  • @AXLPANOSROSE Not just that his style of phrasing and unique tone of voice is one of the best out there. Metal sucks ass now. Plus people these days took progressive metal and turned it into screamo shit.

  • @OneTakeJesus I don't think that metal sucks now!And of caurse i am not talking about the scremo thing you said because this sure sucks ass!But i am more into Power,Symphonic,Heavy,Progressive and these kinds of metal! And these kinds of metal still bring out some good bands!Anyway!I still bealive that Labrie isn't something special but that's on anyone's taste! :Ρ

  • @greenfiero1986 Nah, only before ;)

  • @ConnorFGuitar That's exactly what he means.

  • my favorite song in terms of vocals... yes, its even better than learning to live. LaBrie's incredible here.

  • People disliked this? I mean, it's only four, but anything more than zero is offensive.

  • Comment removed

  • I love this Ibanez so much.

  • People here are right

And i thought EVERYONE is blind

  • @MyMytalMajesty Maybe it's just because i like the twelve-step suite so much as a whole. But other than some of the keyboard parts, Endless Sacrifice is too boring to me instrumentally.

  • @MyMytalMajesty I'd put This Dying Soul in place of Endless Sacrifice, but otherwise yeah.

  • ending solo is just to awsome

  • What does that symbol mean? (The one with the letters bunched up right below the mirror)

  • @Kid12Ghost It's dream theater's logo, conceived by Charlie Dominici, the guy who sang on their first album (but he was not their first singer, that would be Chris Collins back in 1985-86).

  • @xXSTFDXx Majesty symbol as well, the bands original name

  • @xXSTFDXx It's the old Majesty logo when that was their name

  • @Kid12Ghost look at Images And Words and se it on the top of the bed, Scenes from a memory, to the right of the face, six degrees, you'll se it under the Dream Theater text.

  • @Kid12Ghost The "Majesty Symbol" (as it is commonly known) is the letter "M" of "MAJESTY" in a stylized lettering, and is based on the symbol used by Mary Queen of Scots.

Charlie Dominici claims to have been the one creating the symbol, by using each letter of his last name to create the stylized version - but as can be shown by the actual stitchings by Mary Queen of Scots, the differences between the old original symbol and the current Dream Theater symbol is minuscule.

  • @Kid12Ghost Is the majesty logo.. the firt name of the Dream Theater Band

  • @Kid12Ghost it also contains all the letters in "DOMINICI" which i thought was pretty kool. :)

  • I think Mangini is a genius and a perfect replacement for Portnoy, I just miss the man..:(

  • One of DT's finest tunes.

  • How can you say Train of Thought was awful!? Like most of the rest of their CD's, there wasn't even a single bad song on that one.

  • 1. Train of Thought, Scenes from a Memory, Systematic Chaos, Images And Words, Awake, A Change of Seasons, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, A Dramatic Turn of Events

    2. Falling Into Infinity, When Dream And Day Unite

  • 1: Scenes from a memory

    2: Images and words

3: Black Clouds and Silver Linings

4: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

    5: Awake

    6: Train of Thought

    7: Octavarium

    8: Falling into infinity

    9: Systematic Chaos

  • @pinoa7x 1: Dream Theater

    2: Dream Theater

    3: Dream Theater

    4: Dream Theater

    5: Dream Theater

    6: Dream Theater

    7: Dream Theater

    8: Dream Theater

    9: Dream Theater

  • @pinoa7x Awake needs to be higher than BC&SL and SDOIT.

  • de mis canciones favoritas :d

  • All DT albums are awesome. Just some are more awesome than others. (For me its scenes form a memory, Awake and images and words)

  • I always thought the ending of this song was gonna have David Lee Roth as a guest singer lol

  • I think Falling into Infinity was far too underated. Lines in the Sand and Trial of Tears are easily some of their best work. Peruvian skies, New Millenium, Just Let Me Breathe, Take Away My Pain, Burning MY soul were all good too. And Hells Kitchen was an amazing instrumental, infact maybe my favourite.

  • 1. Images and Words 2.Awake 3.When Dream and Day Unite 4. Metropolis Pt 2 5.Octavarium 6. A Change of Seasons 7. Six Degrees 8. Systematic Chaos. 9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings. 10. Falling Into Infinity.

Nothing will ever top Images and Words. Its a perfect album.

  • @Zelda12592

Completely agree except for when day and dram unite. that should be at the very bottom.

  • @ploxioths what are you saying !! The first album is far better than many other albums..

It should be like this: 1.- Awake, 2.- Images and Words, 3.- Scenes from a memory, 4.- When DREAM and DAY unite, 5.- Six Degrees (CD1), 6.- falling into infinity, 7.- Octavarium, 8.- Black clouds, 9.- Train of Thought, 10.- systematic chaos...

By the way, A change of seasons is not an album, its just an EP, if the song by itself were an album.. i think it would be pretty much in the top three.

  • @SebaCabezon

Man no. Train of thought is great, way better than the first album. And images and words is perfection. Awake isn't quite there.

  • @ploxioths ToT is awful.

  • @alphaenemy

Did you stare into the microwave as a kid or something?

  • @ploxioths o_O

  • Oh! And you missed train of thought. Put that in where when day and dream unite is.

  • luv this album maybe 10 years..masterpiece for sure

  • this song makes me go :D

  • This song always makes me happy.

  • brilliant

  • seriously... Try the Andy Mckee cover Solo to the right! It is Unbelievable! best cover ever!

  • Looking back, it's hard to believe just how bad they would start slipping in less than 10 years. After listening to just how terrible "Train of Thought" is, it's hard to believe that just 9 years earlier, they released "Awake".

They have admitted that after "Scenes from a Memory", they focused more on instrumentation instead of songwriting. It really shows. That's why their new stuff can't touch the old stuff. Maybe a few songs here and there are close, but that's it.

  • @Brewzkier I totally agree with your previous Awake comment, the album is perfect. But I think it's interesting that you mention Train of Thought as a terrible album. For me it's the best album from their time after Scenes from a Memory. It has a theme, and style that works for the whole album. And while it may not be very prog, it's comprised of great songs (excluding Honor thy Father, not very good).

I agree with you about the emphasis on instrumentation not songwriting on later albums though

  • They will never top "Awake". This is one of the truly rare occasions when a band managed to produce a near "perfect" album. I&W is close, and some of the individual tracks on that album are stronger than the individual ones here, but as far as consistently good songwriting all the way through, "Awake" is at the top. I can't think of a more balanced album. It's heavy, it's melodic, it's relaxed, it's deep and insightful, it starts well, it ends well, it's got everything. It's perfect.

  • @Brewzkier you nailed the same i think about this album

  • @Brewzkier You speak the truth, my friend! Perfectly said! :^D

  • @Brewzkier you said it all my friend...i agree that some individual songs from images might be considered as better tunes...but godamn...the awake as album as a whole is an absolute masterpiece....also the loose concept that runs through the record and the themes that get repeated makes it absolutelly amazing!

  • @Brewzkier You just cant argue with that...absolutely spot on....

  • @Brewzkier i got awake a few years ago, and you know how after a while you get tired of that badass new cd? never happened. one of my favorites. falling/infinity is great too

  • @Brewzkier I agree with you, although i didn't really like Space Dye Vest. But that song is only on the album beacause Moore was going to leave the band.

  • @Brewzkier Couldn't agree more :)

  • Personally I wouldn't include Train Of Thought in any DT list of mine simply because it is contradictory to their genre. Sure there are some progressive elements in the album, but only because the players themselves just can't help it, It's a part of their play style. But It's just a generic heavy metal album pumped with DT steroids. "Generic" is not something I expect from Dream Theater. I don't even know WHAT the hell they were thinking with Octavarium, excluding the song of course.

  • @XanthapazeP

    Agree 100%.

There were moments in 6DOIT where I was worried about the direction of the band: "Misunderstood", the turntable scratching in "Glass Prison", the System of a Down sounding part in the 6DOIT song (which is overall a very strong song), but overall, I'd say 6DOIT was a passable album. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect them to churn out an album like "Train of Thought." Literally, no redeeming qualities, at all, and it's very sad.

  • @Brewzkier I think your comment on Train of Thought is somewhat valid, in my opinion atleast. From my stand point, I think that, yes Train of Thought was a lower point to their career as a progressive metal band, but as an album by itself, it's still pretty well made, despite somewhat odd lyrical concepts and wanky solo's (As I Am, namely). That being said, songs like Vacant and Stream of Consciousness are fantastic songs that are very much different from the rest of the album.

  • @Jahoragin94 Well the wanky solos were pretty awesome, and a LOT of fun to listen to but in general I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece like Awake or I&W. I like Endless Sacrifice, Stream of Consciousness, and As I Am a fair amount though.

  • @xXSTFDXx do you know what this song is about ?

  • @lsmartin96 This song is about the fading friendship between John Petrucci and Kevin Moore, the former keyboardist of DT.

  • I'd say ; 1. Awake 2. Systematic Chaos 3. WDADU 4. A change of Seasons 5. Octavarium for the top 5 :D

  • 3:09

  • 0:21 sounds calm

  • Total Journey vibe 4:16 thru 4:41! ;^)

  • The production quality of this album just blows my mind every time! Awake and Images & Words are, of course, their Twin Towers of Greatness. I suppose Kevin Moore was an important ingredient...

  • Comment removed

  • Playful solo with false climax moment is probably the reason this song is one of my most favorites for DT.

  • for me this album is one of the best

  • my favrourite of DT has to be Count of Tuscany :D

  • This is my favorite DT song in terms of vocals.

  • Here's how I'd rate their albums... 1. All of them!

Seriously, though, the thing that's so great about Dream Theater is that all of their albums are completely unique. If you listened to them all without any prior knowledge, you'd never guess that they were the same band (well, except for LaBrie's distinctive voice). I get bored with lots of other bands and end up just listening to one or two of their songs because they're all so similar, but Dream Theater alone has a song for any mood I'm in.

  • @MrTanookiMario yes!

  • lets see, my top 5 so far: 1.Awake 2.SDOIT 3.Octavarium 4.Train of Thought 5.Systematic Chaos, 3 and 4 are kinda even

  • Comment removed

  • i only hve 5 albums so far but hear are my top 5 1.Octavarium, 2. Train of thought, 3. Systematic Chaos, 4. Black Clouds and Silver Linings, and 5. Scenes From a Memory

  • Two words. James Labrie. Need I say more? Fucking AMAZING vocalist, no?

  • Hell, the ending solo is one of the finest solos ever.

  • Scarred, Lifting shadows, this one, erotomania... what a great album.

  • man can LaBrie belt those high notes!

  • I'm 56, and found these guys 1 year ago via my son.

Son, I am forever in your debt.

I got a lot of catching up to do! Too bad about Mike. I just hope it turns into a short hiatus.

  • @gornoman Mike Mangini is the new drummer, and he kicks ass. I was at their concert 2 days ago, and I really, really liked them!

  • @gornoman DAD?!?! :O

  • @gornoman That is most possibly the coolest thing I have ever heard.

  • 125 likes, no dislikes!

  • The only things that puts me off about this album is the drum tone, the snare specifically. I know this was released during a time when copious amounts of reverb on snare was cool, but I just can't get past it when I listen to any of the songs on this album.

  • Mine:

    1. SFAM 2. 6 degrees 3. TOT 4. Awake 5. Octavarium (for the title track alone)

    6. Images 7. BC&SL 8. WDADU 9. SC 10. Falling into Infinity.

I felt that WDADU was too forced, again they were all fairly young. I loved TOT because this dying soul was the best song of the 12 step in my opinion, and stream of consciousness is amazing. And octavarium is the best song they've ever written. Just masterfully composed. Fastest 24 minutes ever!.

  • don't care about albums. There are masterpieces on all of them but there isn't a single album which has only masterpieces (IMHO ofc). Dream Theater is just the most amazing band in itself.

  • my top 5 are bcasl , sdoit, awake , tot and octavarium ... disagree if you want bt its my opinion

  • q temoooooooooooon!!!

  • that solo just makes me pick the guitar up everytime :) just a shame i cant play it XD

  • 0 dislikes!!!!!

  • @cloudtool some douche will mess that score up

  • Don't know why, but i feel the need to change my list... 1: Scenes from a Memory 2: Awake 3: Images and Words 4: A COS, just the song 5: Train of Thought 6: WDADU 7: Black Clouds SL 8: Six DOIT 9: Octavarium 10: Falling into infinity 11: Systematic chaos So i didn't change this much, but i realized how weat Systematic chaos sounded when compared to the earlier stuff and even the more recent 'metal-sounding' cd's
  • @senecadawg2 I consider SC one of their most underrated albums.... I thought BC&SL was the weakest yet, and the only things I liked from SDoIT were the title track and The Glass Prison. 1: Images and Words 2: Scenes From a Memory 3: Awake 4: When Dream and Day Unite 5: Octavarium 6: Systematic Chaos 7: Falling Into Infinity 8: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 9: Train of Thought 10: Black Clouds and Silver Linings The ones who are adjacent are a lot closer than you think.
  • BEST OF!

  • Some will transcend spinning years <3

  • Theres no denying it Mike is one of the best ever..

  • I dream of a YouTube where all the comments actually pertain to the video.

  • @kingherold47 You just contradicted yourself. But I completely agree!

  • @kingherold47 so let it be written so let it be done.....

  • WOW 0 justin bieber fans =D

  • The intro is...Nostalgic! For some reason...

  • I love James LaBrie's voice when he goes really high-

    Condescending- NOT INTENDING TO EEEEEEEEENNNDD!!

  • 1 Images & Words

    2 Awake

    3 Metroplis 2

4 When Dream & Day Unite

5 Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance

    6 Train of Thought

    7 Octavarium

didnt really care to rate which was better or worse when it came to Falling Into Infinity, Black Clouds & Silver linings, and Systematic Chaos. All 3 had great stuff, but I&W, Metroplis 2, and Awake had their greatest stuff

  • @classicrockrockz

    I would say

    1. Scenes from a memory

    2. Images and words

    3. Awake

    Almost agree, Peace

  • Great song from this fantastic album, released in 1994 and the third studio album by this New Yorker band!

  • starting from 4:08 the song sounds like Journey :P

  • Sounds kinda like he's saying 'anal sex baby' in the chorus.

  • @jjmah11 LMAO it does sound like he is singing that

  • hahahahaha!!!

  • No dislikes ! YEAH!! That proves indeed that DT's Songs are just awesome and a work of the gods ...

    DREAM THEATER FTW!!! :D

  • LaBrie's voice at 2:25 is just about the most amazing thing ever.

  • LaBrie's voice at 2:25 is just about the most amazing thing ever.

  • LaBrie's voice at 2:25 is just about the most amazing thing ever.

  • For me the best albums of DT are Just these When dream and day unite Images and Words Awake A change of seasons Falling into Infinity Scenes from a memory SDOIT 7rain of 7hought Octavarium Systematic Chaos Dark clouds & Silver Linings
  • Images and Words Awake Scenes Falling Into Infinity A Change of Seasons Systematic Chaos Octavarium Train of Thought Six Degrees When Dream and Day Unite Black Clouds and Silver Linings I prefer the 90s Dream Theater sound, especially in their albums with Kevin Moore on keyboard. Derek and Jordan are very good too, but the band lost a lot of its "atmosphere" when Kev left. Also, his lyrics, especially on Awake, are beautiful.
  • 1: Scene from a memory

    2: Falling into infinity

    3: Images and words

  • when james sings "sharing flesh" i get paralized

  • 2:25-4:17>Every song that is "popular" today

  • Anyone else agree LaBrie is absolutley incredible in this song? and how well he did he do at score... It was incredible!

  • my opinion... albums in order 1. Scenes From a Memory 2. Awake 3. A Change of Seasons (just the song by itself is awesome) 4. Images and Words 5. Black Clouds and Silver Linings 6. Train of Thought 7. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 8. Octavarium 9. Systematic Chaos 10. Falling Into Infinity... What do you guys think???
  • @senecadawg2 You forgot WDADU, which is one of their top 3 albums.

  • @xXSTFDXx

ooo so sorry... i actually just got WDADU so its the one i'm least familiar with... but the couople times i've heard it... I love it too! They say that dominici isn't nearly as good as JL, and while James will always be the voice of dream theater. Dominici wasn't bad.

    ONLY A MATTER OF TIME!!!!

  • @senecadawg2

There's something about When Dream And Day Unite.. It's amazing in all of its 80's-ness :P Charlie's voice wasn't as strong as James' but his vocals are great nevertheless.

  • @Arthemesic That's exactly it!!! Wow... yeah, it's something about this elusive "80's-ness" that just makes this album so fantastic and nostalgic (even though I was born in the 90's). And even though charlie is not as great a singer as labrie is, I think he was just right for this album.

  • @xXSTFDXx

Exactly! All the 80's-ness, all the nostalgia, it makes the album very interesting.

Charlie's voice is definitely needed on this album, although I could imagine James LaBrie singing the verse of Light The Fuse And Get Away.

BTW I was born in the year when James joined Dream Theater ;)

  • @xXSTFDXx its awesome isnt it

  • @olliemedsy Hell yeah. Sad thing is, people spend too much time overrating SFAM/I&W/6DOIT and overlooking WDADU.

  • @xXSTFDXx i know. i mean my fave 3 albums by them are scenes, images and dream and day. so...YEAH!!!

  • @xXSTFDXx But Images and Words is a really great album...

  • @xXSTFDXx I agree. wdadu is excellent... and even if someone doesn't like dominici's voice, it still has Ytse Jam which is their best instrumental imo.

  • @xXSTFDXx 1. Awake, 2. Scenes from a Memory, 3. Images and Words, 4. Systematic Chaos, 5. Train of Thought, 6. When Dream and Day Unite, 7. A Change of Seasons, 8. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, 9. Falling into Infinity, 10. Black Clouds and Silver Linings, 11. Octavarium. That's just my opinion though.

  • @xXSTFDXx maybe top 5 but not top 3 in my opinion... just sayin

  • @xXSTFDXx Personally I don't like neither WDADU nor Falling Into Infinity as albums, but they have awesome songs like Afterlife, Ytse Jam, Light Fuse and Get Away, Only a Matter of Time, The ones who help to set the Sun, Lines In The Sand, Kell's Kitchen, and Trial of Tears. Also Burning My Soul would qualify, as it was part of Hell's Kitchen.

I don't know how Raise The Knife didn't get to be in FII, that song is really kickass.

  • @xXSTFDXx In my opinion: 1) Images and Words 2) A Change of Seasons 3) Scenes From a Memory 4) Awake 5) When Dream and Day Unite 6) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 7) Falling into Infinity 8) Train of Thought 9) Black Clouds and Silver Linings 10) Octavarium 11) Systematic Chaos
  • @xXSTFDXx that's because WDADU is, in my opinion (shared by many others), is their worst album. Which still earns it a 9/10 in my book.

  • @xXSTFDXx Except that Myung's bass sounds "farty" on WDADU! ;^)

  • @senecadawg2 good list, but Octavarium is one of my favorites.

  • @senecadawg2 1: Scenes From a memory

    2: Images and words

    3: Train of thought

4: Black CLouds & Silver Linings

5: Six Degrees of inner turbulence

    6: Falling Into Infinity

    7: Awake

    8: Octavarium

    9: Systematic CHaos

  • @pinoa7x How could can anyone put TOT & BCSL before Awake!

  • @senecadawg2 I don't agree fully but Falling Into Infinity is definitely last.

  • @senecadawg2 I don't agree fully but Falling Into Infinity is definitely last. Not that its bad, its just not great compared to the others.

  • @senecadawg2 1. Six Degrees 2. Octavarium 3. Images and Words 4. Scenes From a Memory 5. Train of Thought 6. Black Clouds 7. A Change of Seasons 8. Awake 9. WDADU 10. Systematic Chaos 11. Falling into Infinity

  • @senecadawg2 i loved systematic chaos, i think that should be rated higher than BCASL, i loved in the presence of enemies, dark eternal night, ministry of lost souls etc, bcasl was great as well, but i dont think SC deserves such a low rating, i would bring down TOT, only this dying soul, SOC, in the name of god were nice

  • @senecadawg2 OCTAVARIUM! Its one of their best songs, but the album :/ Train of Thought is also good but a bit, heavy!

  • @senecadawg2 I agree with you, the only thing that I would change is the place of Octavarium becuase for me is the worst album that dream theater wrote!!
