just think,a kid in pasadena ca. about 30 or so figured this all out himself and invented the best soundind guitars and amps all by himself, and went through this in guitar player mag.in 1983! and i ruuined only about 7 pick ups myself, but got it down finally.
When the string manipulates the pickups' magnetic flux, the coil vibrates due to a transfer of energy. This could create it's own force when it comes back to rest. I think that's why you hear a flubby sound before potting the pickup.
@amihol i use the grocery store brand Parowax, but if you can get beeswax, melt it in with the Parowax (parafin). beeswax helps keep it from cracking so much :)
They are Duncan Desined...i am asuming something got coated that shouldnt have ,thats the only thing i can think. It all worked out great though...my wife told me to go replace them with what i want..."ear to ear"
@dragonlense oh okay, i thought u were the guy with the EMG's. i have those pickups. shoulda worked fine. maybe they had lived their last days. CONGRATS on the new pups! woohoo!!
Hey I followed your instructions on my Jackson and now it kind of sounds like its shorting out after wax potting them. I had to cut and reconnect in the pickup holes...could that be the problem that the connection is right under the pickups?
@PatrykdeRosa Well i took everything apart and checked it all and no luck. So I figured the pots were bad and replaced everything including the switch and output jack. Still no go. So I have come to the conclusion that the pickups just didnt handle the potting and fried them somehow. So it really suck that I have to go down and get a set of EMG 81/85s!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSS....THANK YOU JESUS!
@dragonlense that is a shame they don't work. EMG's are different and they seem pretty well sealed. like i said, i have limited knowledge about them. did you monitor the temperature? it might not have mattered. they might have extra circuitry that should not be submerged.
Hey great vid man really helpful. I'm getting some weird microphonic stuff through my EMGs....but im not sure if I can pot active EMGs and I cant find the answer anywhere! If I pot my EMG 81 and 85 will they die? or will it benefit the microphonics?
@judgeshred66 thank you, dude! is there a coil you can see? i have very little experience with EMG's/active pups. i never found them appealing for the lack of natural resonation and sound of passive pups. not sure. sorry. BUT, if you can see a coil that could be safely potted, i don't see why not.
Thanks for a great vid! You inspired me to pot the pickups on a Ric that was feeding back so badly it was virtually un-playable. The results blew me away! I got my guitar back! Thanks.
@dtravish2p6 always great to hear a success story. you must have done it right! nice! glad this helped. i used my Dean EVO 7 (used in this video) last nite for a gig and it was very quiet- fully cranked, overdriven to the max through my marshall 100 watt half stack. i couldn't do this when i got it. re-potting does amazing things, huh?
@milkmextian excellent question. nope, leave on. it won't get that hot at the recommended temp. BUT, sometimes it comes off because it's not fastened, just held with the wax usually. if it comes off, just press it back into place. when the wax dries it won't move.
...... i'm not sure how long the pickup was sitting around at the store before i bought it.. but i live in a wet / warm climate, the guitar has been well taken care of otherwise..
@sphacelus my first thought is probably what yours was. it may have been exposed to a lot of climate fluctuation, causing the wax to break down. if you feel ambitious, carefully re-pot it. worth a try.
I have a question. I have a fairly-new Ibanez RG series guitar. Its got the standard INF ibanez pickups. its been working perfectly till a month ago. now, whenever im getting louder, the strings give this nastyyy feedback whenever i try to mute the strings with my hand(without turning volume down). My volume basically has to be off everytime im not playing a riff. Havent seen much help around here;/ hoping you could? Thanks
@jjeeffffrreeyyb yea that's the feedback you get from a space in the coils. better pot them! just dunk that sucker in wax and watch how well that works.
@PatrykdeRosa SHIT lol. weell seeing im not very awesome with taking apart guitar stuff and things like that, and i dont want to make my guitar temporary unplayable by Fing it up. Is there any other temporary solution? like is a noicegate/suppressor gonna do the same job? thanks for the help man
@jjeeffffrreeyyb noise gates are fine, but it won't be like it used to be. it will cut off your sound and you might find it frustrating. AND, it may not even solve the problem. i use a noise gate, but it works properly (doesn't cut into my notes) because FIRST, you gotta get your pickup working properly. if sounding good means anything to you, you should either get a new pup or re-pot the old one. it's not difficult.
I've had an Ibanez pf300 Les Paul copy that I have had for years! A year ago one of the pickups just started to squeal like a hot mic. I normally had to play the guitar with the volume on that pick up at half way. If i had it full volume it would squeal but not while you were playing it only when it was not touched. Do you think that potting might fix this?
@morbe77 yep, i'm gathering by the age of the axe and what you describe it's in need of re-potting. that sounds like the problem. just wait until all the bubbles go away while it's dunked. that will ensure a good seal. this should work wonders. what happens is the factory wax dissipates and falls out. what is left is open spaces around the coils. this causes microphonic feedback. very common.
The pickups were so old and producing unwanted feed back...unwanted means terrible screams which by no means you can control when you are playing on stage...
I ended up having my amp and guitar volume lower than the rest, and i had to play lead :)
after wax potting, things went 70% better... No repairman allowed me to change the pickups since it sounded awesome especially on the clean channel...

@CaptainCocaine i wouldn't recommend just doing this to all your guitars. if they sound good, leave them be. this one needed it.

Thanks.

yes, by "air" i mean "space". big thanks man. i'm no expert, but i try!
PatrykdeRosa 2 years ago
It's not the air. It's the vibration of the coils that the sir space permits that makes it squeel. But great video no the less.
