you can't compare saloons with sports cars. apples with apples and oranges with oranges. AMG? Maybe you are thinking of Mercedes and not Audi? That Mercedes has that much engine because of the weight of the car. have you ever seen an s class AMG? Corvette being made of plastic will crush that saloon. But if you compare that Mercedes to an american saloon, there is no competition. I think you are still missing the point.
vcool, they are the same capacity engines almost. 6.0 liters for the AMG and 6.1 for the vette. more cylinders does not equate to a bigger engine. Ever heard of big block and small block v8's? What's their different? Liter capacity, check your facts please.
@clover0958 "6.0 liters for the AMG and 6.1 for the vette. more cylinders does not equate to a bigger engine"
Which sort of proves my point that theres no right or wrong way of building an engine. Both are over 600bhp .One by using more cylinders to make up for the less dsplcmnt, and one using a larger dsplcmnt to make up for the less cylinders . As long as they do what they're supposed to do.
This suspension is made to make you feel like you were rolling on a cloud, not for sharp turns and performance. God that guy can be an idiot sometimes.
no doubt v8cool. but expiriencing american and european cars, europeans tend to use better quality in their biulds and smaller engines that produce a better hp/weight ratio (Generally speaking). More specifically european cars in europe have these. European cars for the US markets don't have available all the options due to pricing and US market restraints. From my expirience, German is the way to go to cover all your needs. (Never expiriences Japanese though)
@clover0958 But you didn't say anything about Weight/hp ratio, you just said big engines that under produce. I don't call 630+bhp from a vette underproducing considering it uses LESS technology than alot of euro cars of similar sized engines like the 12 cylinder 6.3 litre Audi which only produces 500bhp.
@v8cool1 I think you are missing my point. I was agreeing with you that there is more to a car than horsepower. The interior features, quality build, and a good power plant that produces for its size. Americans in their entirety don't build quality cars. That is why Americans buy and sell cars constantly. because their cars die. European and Japanese cars hold their standards higher. That is why throughout Europe, people still hold on to their cars for longer because they actually last.
@v8cool1 you mean Audi's R8 v10 5.2 liter naturally aspired which states it puts out 525 hp. You are comparing it to a lager liter engine with a supercharger which it only pulls out an extra 100 horsepower. With the extra liter capacity and supercharger that is mediocre engineering. The vette's rev limiter is 7000 when the Audi maxes at 8700. Once again, engineering plays a huge role. That vette engine is under-performing for it's size. I don't know if you understand that.
@clover0958 At the end of the day, the corvette doesn't underperform. All this talk of rev numbers, superchargers etc etc all leads to one thing. Speed. And the vette does enzo performance for less than £100k with eight cylinder and a S/C. Theres no right or wrong way of doing it whether its a V10 or V8 .In the real world all this stuff about revs means nothing to 90% of people .It only matters to boffins. As long as an engine does what it sets out to do, then it performs well.
@v8cool1 GTR's and EVo's are more better compared to those supercars when it comes to performance. Have you ever seen a vette take a curve? Performance is not in a straight line.
@clover0958 I've seen a vette go around a track. I used to live near a race track, and I've seen the youtube video of the vette pursuing a Lambo round a track. Never once lost it, or spun it. The vette actually uses the same suspension as the R8- Magnetic ride adaptive suspension.
So whats the excuse of the 2008 6.0L V12 Bi Turbo AMG. 612bhp. Four more cylinders than the vette and two turbos and it's about 20 bhp less than the vette. Is that under performing?
Europe uses more cylinders less discplacement to get power, the US uses larger dpclmt less cylinders and S/C.
Yes engineering does play a role.which is fine, if you want to charge people for it. But chevy don't. US car companies have always been about lots of HP for a good price. The R8 is more expensive than the Vette. Having a large dsplcmnt S/C V8 in the vette is a good way of giving people lots of HP in a car that just under £100k and still delivers good fuel ecnomy.
@clover0958 just watched it. Although you can't really trust clarkson driving, as he does over do it for entertainments sake., and sometimes doesn't even do his own driving on the show as it's been leaked out, he does point out pros and cons for both.
Funny how he said "in the real world the corvette doesn't work", when he'd just based that comment on throwing it round a track at 200mph. To me, race track is not the real world
@clover0958 If you want an honest unbiased review and track race with the vette , look for the video 'Corvette ZR1 vs Lambo SV by autocar'
It's a british show and they drive them how you would in the real world not a racetrack. The reviewer says how nicely and honest it handles and is really impressed by it's handling, without any Jeremys OTT over steering and un-nessasery wheelspinning.
@clover0958 "European cars for the US markets don't have available all the options"
True. They also get the HP dropped as well by the US government like they did to US cars before they started using S/Cers on their cars to get high H/P and still pass emission standards.
@clover0958 US engines Produced well until the mid 70's when the government decided to limited the HP by fill them restricters and emission stuff. Luckily over the past couple of years, they HP has comeback.
But besides, theres more to a car than HP. Styling, comfort, robustness for starters.
@HRHooChicken Alot of them were designed by the same corperations . The same way Audis look like VW's and Seats . The Mercury marquis, Crown vic, and Lincoln towncar were the same corperation for example and use the same platform and parts.
Most cars from the 1970s were rubbish... and nice hair Clarkson ...LOL!!! Now go drive an Independent Rear Suspension, DOHC four valve 4.6 liter Supercharged 2003 SVT Cobra... or better yet, a new 2011 Boss 302 (BMW M3 killer) Mustang (that's right, M3 killer, don't believe? Look it up)... Times have changed since the 1970s fuel embargo days, or the learning to balance emissions with horsepower 1980s, the 1990s were getting closer, but now, they have figured it out!
I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone made a good car in the 70's even the Japanese ones where dumbfounded by cold weather. Many of the Euro cars were riddled with electrical problems (I consider the most annoying). Wait ....... I just remembered. The Germans .... they were the only ones that made good cars back then, not all of them were nice to look at, and the parts costs were ...... awful.
@GrandMoffSilvey"The Germans .... they were the only ones that made good cars back then,"
I wouldn't even say that I remebe rin the early 80's a 71 BMW sitting in a garage forecourt rusting away with an un-repairable gearbox. It must of only of been 12 years old, and it was rotten. The Auto transmissions were terrible on old German cars. My dad owned a 70's Audi in the 80's, and binned it off. Ity was only 10 years old, and useless. And the Porsche 924.
@v8cool1 Yeah the Porche and Auto Union were pretty bad. I forgot about them. Getting parts for Mercs and BMWs was a pain. And, if you went to the dealer ..... I was like preparing to give a large man a crying Blow Job. You paid a lot. I the only tolerable automatic transmission I can think of were a few american ones from GM and Ford, but they killed power and gas mileage like no other. But, you have to admit VW made alot of beetles because of there low cost of ownership.
The steering wheel position looks like a bit awkward. "If you could imagine sharing a water bed with a baboon, that's just been done some itching powder" Did i hear correctly ?
I fuckin' love the Town Car! In fact, I love all these large cars from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I might have missed out on those times but dammit, I would of loved to be livin it. Too bad gas is so expensive nowadays.
@DTerminatorII ahahahaha typical American! He thinks USA is center of the WORLD! U know what? it isnt.who makes audi, bmw, wiesmann, porsch, vw, mercedes, ferrari, lambo, fiat, lancia, aston martin, land rover, jaguar, lotus, mg, mini, tvr, triumph, renault, peugeot, volvo...aso...? E-U-R-O-P-E!!!America makes cool cars, but they are not...hmm how to say...they are plastic inside
Maybe they've learned their habits from the Englishmen building Vauxhall. lol.
Back in the days it was not unusual to find half smoked cigarettes and beer-bottle caps under the floor carpeting on the Vauxhalls. When we started importing the German-made Vauxhall (Opel) to Norway that was no longer a problem.
Lincolns are actually one of the most durable cars ever built. They would regularly rack up 300,000 miles as taxis and police cars. Keep in mind this car was probably 15 years old in this video.
Would be funny to see someone set that Towncar up with some stiff springs/shocks, lowered about 2 inches, huge sway bars and some 17" wheels. It would probably handle pretty good. But then the brakes are only 11" discs up front lol... 13" Brembo's would work lol. =P
This guy knows some stuff but he should stick to cars that he knows like his english cars because he says this car is awful but he says that about most American cars.
This car is awesome i would buy if i could find one.
@shobin05 Don't forget Crown Vic's. Yeah they aren't rockets and don't handle the best but lets see a Jaguar run the odometer past 400,000 miles on the mean streets of NYC...
How about you do American cars in the 50's & 60's and compare that to European cars and see which is better. I swear, Clarkson will only look at our bad cars and completely tip-toes over all the great ones we had. 50's & 60's: Bel-Air, Malibu, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Firebird, Cougar, DeVille, Falcon, Impala, Corvette, Chevelle, Thunder-Bolt, Capri, Duster, Charger, GTO, Barracuda, Super Bird and the list goes on and on. Completely ignores those beautiful cars and only shows our worst ones.
I love how all the Americans are taking this to heart and raging about English people. lol
I'm sorry, but this car does look awful. Not saying the English always made perfect cars, because we didn't, but there is a reason James Bond drives an Aston Martin and not a 10 ton Cadillac (Not sure if the spelling is correct) American cars are not popular in the UK, i would imagine its the same for English cars in the US, i don't know if Astons, Jaguars and Bentleys are popular in the US.
@paypointpal Of course they aren't, but only because, for the most part, they're extremely expensive. I see alot of old Jaguar XJ8s (alot of people overlook its similarities to a car like this) but I haven't seen an Aston or Bentley in person in a long time.
@desertfox2020 I see a lot of Bentley's, Aston's, original Mini's, Lotus's, Land Rovers.
All those cars here in England.
You could buy an American car in the UK, but you would have to find a specialist dealer and they are always extremely over priced for what they are.
Most people drive Automatics in the US though, no idea why. In the UK we mostly drive Manuals, but you can still buy classic 70's English cars, there are still a lot about.
@paypointpal I see quite a few Range Rovers too, forgot about that, and my friend has a brand new Mini. I really don't know why we like manuals over here, we just do... maybe we really are as lazy as we're stereotyped to be.
My sister drives a Semi Auto, Speedgear. You can drive it as a Full Auto, but you can switch it into Manual mode and push back and forth to go through the gears yourself, its great fun for overtaking, it selects 1st on its own when you come to a stop.
Its quite fun, but when you're used to a 6 speed manual like i am, its hard to adjust to back and forth for the gears. lol
My dad had a Auto Jaguar, it had 2nd and 3rd as an option for more power though.
@paypointpal My friend has a Jetta with one, its fun. I drive a truck (typical American, I know) with a column shift, automatic, which is what I like most of the time. However there's alot of times where I wish I could shift it, especially for over taking, pulling something heavy, and accelerating up hills. I believe newer ones have a +/- button on the end of the lever, but mines too old for that.
@desertfox2020 Does your Auto truck not have the kick down then.?
Automatics over here have a kick down, so when you push the pedal to the floor it activates the kick down, which basically goes down a gear and gives you more power so you can overtake, like if you changed down to overtake in a Manual.
I find certain Automatics interesting, like Toyota's MMT, multi mode transmission, thats a very interesting take on the semi auto style, i would love to try one out.
@paypointpal It does actually, I thought all autos did. However it seems that you have to literally stand on the pedal to activate it, its not very sensitive at all. It actually takes some effort to floor it completely. I know this can be adjusted but I don't want to strain the engine unnecessarily by flooring it often. For my truck the more reliable way to quickly overtake is to let off the accelerator, drop a gear via speed loss, and then accelerate as much as you can before it shifts up.
@desertfox2020 Yeah, i can imagine that must kind of suck.I know someone who just passed there test, and bought a small car, its very slow, the only way of over taking in it, is letting off the accelerator, dropping back, then flooring it to get a run up to overtake.
Its awful, there is no punch at all by dropping it down a gear. A lot of Auto's have a Sport button too, which keeps it in gear for longer before switching up, so you can get more revs and more power. My dads Jag had a sport button
@paypointpal Yeah, I can do 0-60 in a respectable time for a vehicle its size (8 or 9 seconds) but accelerating to a higher speed from about 50 or 60, it just isn't made to do that and resists you telling it to. My mom has a small Ford, its the equivalent of a pre-2000 Mondeo for you, and its absolutely terrible in every way. It makes my truck feel like a sports car.
My dads Jaguar is an Auto, it can do 0-60 in about 6 and a half seconds, which isn't bad considering its an Auto, it weighs like 2 tonnes, and is a 1989 classic Jag. lol
Its very fast for its age, still has a lot of horses under the bonnet, it can still do around 145mph, but i wouldn't like to try it lol.
My car is a Manual, i have a Saab. 2.3 Turbo Sport, it does 0-60 in just under 5 seconds, i had it tuned, but standard it can do it in 7.
@paypointpal Yeah old cars are often plenty fast, but you never want to go that fast in something that old. I'm not really aware of my truck's top speed and considering its age and that it gets driven almost 500 miles a week (250,000 on it right now) I'm not going to find out.
@paypointpal Yeah, I know alot of people who keep their older cars not because they can't afford new ones, but because their old ones are dependable and will continue to be. I know people with very high mileage fords, jeeps, hondas, dodges... they all can last. How long a car lasts depends more on the driver than the brand. Sure there's some cars that are just junk, but if a car is taken care of and driven sensibly, it can be driven as much as you need to for a very long time with few problems.
@desertfox2020 Yeah exactly. My dad had a very good car, it was a 1991, never had any problems with it, he decided to buy a 2004 Renault Megane back when they were first introduced, he had nothing but electrical problems with it, never ending, he sold it quickly, and bought his Jaguar, which is a 1989, never had any problems with this.
My dad trained as a mechanic when he was younger, so he does most repairs himself. He looks after his cars, engine, interior, exterior, always look great.
@paypointpal It's amazing how ignorant people can be sometimes, my friend has a mid size pickup with a custom muffler system and so he enjoys flooring it all over the place, because it sounds cool.... and just today he was complaining that its pinging and he doesn't know why. He redlines it at every chance, and sure it sounds great, until it breaks down. My sister blew the head gasket on a 5 year old Hemi Durango because she floors it all the time, the car had only 70,000 on it.
@desertfox2020 And the funny thing is, my brother who is now 23, bought a car about a year ago, it was a good car when he bought it, but he likes to drive fast all the time, last week the head gasket went on it, and hes had a few other problems with it too, all very expensive. He doesn't understand why it has so many problems, yet hes always telling me stories of how he went over a hill so fast he made the car take off, and how he did doughnuts and handbrake turns and what speed he had out of it
@paypointpal I wish I had the skills and self confidence to work on my own vehicles. I work on lawnmower engines, but I don't trust myself to work on a car. This has come back to bite me before. Last summer, on the highway, my left rear wheel flew off. 3 of the lugs snapped and 2 were bent. The lug nuts I found were cracked, and all of the brake components and the wheel itself were destroyed. All this because I didn't put on my own tires, and the shop over tightened the lugs on that wheel.
@desertfox2020 I don't really know much about engines and stuff like that, i'm not very good with it. My dad knows his stuff, so if i have problems i ask him to look at it for me. lol
I don't trust a lot of garages, i always get the feeling they are over pricing things or they haven't done what they said they have done.
@paypointpal Exactly, I know a guy who I think is pretty trustworthy, but I'm going to start having a friend of mine who definitely knows what hes doing help me in the future. He restored a barely running car on his own and it runs great so I'm sure he can do some small repairs here and there to a perfectly good vehicle.
My dad does that sometimes, he had a few cars in the past which he bought cheap just so he could restore them. Seeing as i don't know about engines and car parts, he would order whatever he wanted, and i would go pick them up. It was actually a lot of fun, seeing the car a huge mess when he bought it, we would take pictures so you can see how it progressed over time.
The last car we restored was in 2010, it was another Jaguar.
@paypointpal My friend's a bit of a Ford fanatic... he has an Edge for a family car, an F250 for his work at a steel mill, and the car he restored was a '91 F150 that he got for $500 at a junk yard. It had a bent frame, mismatched color panels, terrible interior quality, and no exhaust system at all. The engine ran, barely. Now, it's a great weekend cruiser, despite the terrible gas mileage (something like 11 mpg on a good day).
@paypointpal I tried to buy it off him, but the sense of accomplishment you get for doing something successfully like that is too great, and he'll never get rid of it. I really like the old Jaguars, I've never seen one in person in the states though. My dad used to work with a guy who had one, and he gave him a few rides in it, he said it was so fast on the open highway it was almost scary. It was a convertible, not sure of the model but it was a smaller one.
@desertfox2020 Yeah, the sense of accomplishment is great. I love it, because you experience different cars, all cars are different, its cheap to buy, and you can re store it in your own time, and then finding the right parts at cheap prices, its really fun.
Jaguars are common in the UK, but mostly new Jaguars, you rarely see the model my dad has. They are very fast, my dads is a 4.0, straight six.
Very powerful car, and such high quality interior.
@paypointpal I hope to restore a classic car one day, preferably a muscle car, they might not handle well on the track but they're definitely fun cars and sound good. I know someone with a '65 Mustang, its his daily driver, and it looks about as good as I'm sure it did in 1965. I want to have a car I can say that about.
@desertfox2020 You can cruise a long at 90mph in my dads Jaguar and it doesn't feel like you're moving, its so smooth, with the power and being an Auto, its so easy to just accelerate from 60 onwards and cruise past people, its very gruff sounding if you accelerate quickly, being a powerful car.
But if you just accelerate gradually you will reach 90 and just glide past people comfortably. Its 1989, but it has electric seats, heated seats, cruise control, all electric windows & on board computer
@paypointpal Very nice. I will never understand why someone would want a car with a small, hybrid engine, a CVT transmission, 12 second 0-60 times and an exhaust system that makes it completely silent. I want at least 6 cylinders in any case, I want it to be loud, and I want to feel it shift. The Prius may be great on gas but I'd rather not drive than have to put up with the lack of stimuli you'd receive while driving it.
Sadly, i was forced to have a small engined car when i first passed my test, because car insurance is stupidly expensive in the UK.Now that i have been driving a few years though, i was able to get my Saab which i'm so happy with, i don't drive fast constantly, but i like to know if i get stuck behind a line of cars, that i can drop it down a gear and be put into my seat lol. It doesn't make a lot of noise because its a Turbo, it just whistles and whines a bit
@paypointpal Turbo whine or supercharger whine is just as good as the engine itself being loud in my book. Insurance is stupidly expensive here too when you are in school still, and can't work full time to pay for it. I don't know what it costs to have a car registered as a classic, but I can't imagine the insurance on that is cheap at all.
@desertfox2020 Yeah, i love the Turbo whine, especially when you let off the accelerator a bit and it calms down, sounds so nice.
When i bought my first car, the main figure i was interested in was the MPG, because i knew insurance was going to cost so much, i needed to get the most out of what money i would have left after paying insurance every month.
It was a very stressful time to be honest, but i'm so glad my insurance has gone down, now i can look at buying cars and buy whatever i want.
@paypointpal Yeah MPG is killing me, only due to the amount I drive though. I'm just not ready to give up my vehicle despite what it costs to drive it. If I could make a decent amount of money closer to home, I wouldn't care about the price of gas... but I can't.
@desertfox2020 I know what you mean. My dads Jaguar does about 17mpg.
Even with my Turbo and it being a fast car, as long as you don't drive it hard, my car returns a decent MPG. Its all very expensive now though, car insurance, yearly road tax, M.O.T's, on top of that you need more money to actually be able to drive your car.
Its stupid. I do quite a bit of driving for my job, its hard because i don't earn a set wage, money can be up then down for me, sometimes i lose money in my work.
@paypointpal That's got to be really frustrating. I like driving, and would love a job where I could drive alot, but only if I got compensated for gas haha
@desertfox2020 lol. I love driving too, its so much fun.
I don't know if you have heard of Snooker, but its a cue sport like Pool in the US.
Snooker is huge in England, where as in the US Pool is huge.
But yeah, i'm a professional Snooker player, i enter tournements through out the year all over England, Poland, Germany, Brazil and more on the professional circuit, so my car is important, i drive a lot.
@paypointpal Wow. I can understand how gas prices could pile up quickly, all to have you make nothing off all that you spent to get there, if things don't go your way.
@desertfox2020 I have to pay £100 entry fee for tournements, if i can reach the last 64 then i get £200, and the prize money goes up and up from then on in the tournement.
There are tournements a few times a few month, but if i don't reach the last 64, then i'v lost my £100 entry fee. The winner of these tournements gets around £10,000 though, much more for the bigger events too, some going up to £300,000.
So yeah, money can be tight, lots of pressure on me winning. I do well though mostly.
I won a tournement in late 2010, that got me about £11,000. I got got to the semi finals etc of a few in 2011 which earnt me a little bit more to keep me going.
I just need to win a big one haha. It can be hard to keep your spirits up when you don't even reach the last 64 though.
@paypointpal "You could buy an American car in the UK, but you would have to find a specialist dealer and they are always extremely over priced for what they are."
It depends. If you buy the classics, they're very well priced. Parts a cheap as hell if you get them from the US as the £-$ exchange makes them half price, specialist insurance reduces the cost too and the simplicity of the mechanics and community aspect of owning classic US cars in the UK, makes repairs cheap.
@paypointpal "and they are always extremely over priced for what they are."
The new ones imported to the UK are aimed at fans, like the Mustangs and Vettes etc, so they will pay a higher price as fans do for things they love. But even so, I don't think they're overly expensive from an importer unlike a main dealership.
An ordinary car you see on the streets most days in the US, is really over priced in the UK because they are rare here, and to be honest, everyday American cars are not suited for English roads, every day English cars are probably quite small on American roads.
I would pay quite a bit of money for classic muscles cars though, and the cool 1950's cars.
@paypointpal But we don't really get the everyday american cars here except for chrysler. But £23k for a 300, a full sized fully loaded car isn't bad.
Who cares about Top Gear?? the people who 'hate' America writhe their knowledge around Conspiracy Theories.....watching David Duke videos....and neo-Marxist (left) propaganda...mask themselves as 'liberals'... :D
@jm57971 rule number 1- don't take anything serious on youtube. its fuckin youtube. i was just fuckin around...i actually think hes a funny sonofabitch and i enjoy the ORIGINAL top gear show. now, please
The suspention was for a smooth ride. The car was long and heavy because we Americans like space and we used steel to build cars not aluminum. Get it?
@xPyroxx An amphicar is still a car ..hence the word 'car' on the end. The same way a sea plane is still a plane.
I think an amphicar would be quite fun though. Stuck in traffic for an hour whilst they fix that road bridge over the river?? Well, cross the river yourself T'daaaa.
No parking spaces in the city? Well you can moor your car instead .
Man I tell you...you freakin Europeans worry about only 1 thing.... how to TRY to make Americans look inferior. The whole purpose of cars of that caliber was luxury....not performance. Mind you this is a late 1970's car. What level of cars did the UK make in those days? As you all would say....RUBBISH. 80% of your car makers dont even exist anymore because they were so horrible. So just be clear, dont throw stones in a glass house...look at yourself rather than look at other countries (USA)
@DTerminatorII Just because our country made bad cars doesn't mean we can't make fun of the equally bad cars of other countries. At least we had the decency to stop offering terrible cars to the general public
I agree what you say about UK cars, but just face it these cars had been crap. ugly and bad engineerd. Europeans don't want to make you look inferior. They only want to set things straight. The self-perception you have differs a lot from how people abroad see you. America is not superior and Europe isn't too. You have an army, a lot of money and pride, that doesn't make th US superior.

This suspension is made to make you feel like you were rolling on a cloud, not for sharp turns and performance. God that guy can be an idiot sometimes.
TheMudDragon 1 week ago
no doubt v8cool. but expiriencing american and european cars, europeans tend to use better quality in their biulds and smaller engines that produce a better hp/weight ratio (Generally speaking). More specifically european cars in europe have these. European cars for the US markets don't have available all the options due to pricing and US market restraints. From my expirience, German is the way to go to cover all your needs. (Never expiriences Japanese though)
clover0958 1 week ago
@clover0958 But you didn't say anything about Weight/hp ratio, you just said big engines that under produce. I don't call 630+bhp from a vette underproducing considering it uses LESS technology than alot of euro cars of similar sized engines like the 12 cylinder 6.3 litre Audi which only produces 500bhp.
v8cool1 1 week ago
@v8cool1 I think you are missing my point. I was agreeing with you that there is more to a car than horsepower. The interior features, quality build, and a good power plant that produces for its size. Americans in their entirety don't build quality cars. That is why Americans buy and sell cars constantly. because their cars die. European and Japanese cars hold their standards higher. That is why throughout Europe, people still hold on to their cars for longer because they actually last.
clover0958 1 week ago
@v8cool1 you mean Audi's R8 v10 5.2 liter naturally aspired which states it puts out 525 hp. You are comparing it to a lager liter engine with a supercharger which it only pulls out an extra 100 horsepower. With the extra liter capacity and supercharger that is mediocre engineering. The vette's rev limiter is 7000 when the Audi maxes at 8700. Once again, engineering plays a huge role. That vette engine is under-performing for it's size. I don't know if you understand that.

v8cool1 1 week ago
@clover0958 At the end of the day, the corvette doesn't underperform. All this talk of rev numbers, superchargers etc etc all leads to one thing. Speed. And the vette does enzo performance for less than £100k with eight cylinder and a S/C. Theres no right or wrong way of doing it whether its a V10 or V8 .In the real world all this stuff about revs means nothing to 90% of people .It only matters to boffins. As long as an engine does what it sets out to do, then it performs well.
v8cool1 1 week ago
@v8cool1 GTR's and EVo's are more better compared to those supercars when it comes to performance. Have you ever seen a vette take a curve? Performance is not in a straight line.
clover0958 1 week ago
@clover0958 I've seen a vette go around a track. I used to live near a race track, and I've seen the youtube video of the vette pursuing a Lambo round a track. Never once lost it, or spun it. The vette actually uses the same suspension as the R8- Magnetic ride adaptive suspension.

@clover0958
No, I mean't the Audi A8 W12.
So whats the excuse of the 2008 6.0L V12 Bi Turbo AMG. 612bhp. Four more cylinders than the vette and two turbos and it's about 20 bhp less than the vette. Is that under performing?
Europe uses more cylinders less discplacement to get power, the US uses larger dpclmt less cylinders and S/C.
v8cool1 1 week ago
@clover0958 "engineering plays a huge role."

True. They also get the HP dropped as well by the US government like they did to US cars before they started using S/Cers on their cars to get high H/P and still pass emission standards.
v8cool1 1 week ago
Yea, american car's never had a good touch. Big engines that under produce aren't my idea of awesome.
clover0958 1 week ago
@clover0958 US engines Produced well until the mid 70's when the government decided to limited the HP by fill them restricters and emission stuff. Luckily over the past couple of years, they HP has comeback.
But besides, theres more to a car than HP. Styling, comfort, robustness for starters.

In grade school, '69-'75 I watched all the teacher' american (and foreign) cars bio degrade rapidly (rust).
Add loss of power due to 1st generation emissions, nasty chrome, white walled tires, and you had some real losers.

Many of the Euro cars were riddled with electrical problems (I consider the most annoying). Wait ....... I just remembered.
And the Porsche 924.
v8cool1 2 weeks ago
@v8cool1 Yeah the Porche and Auto Union were pretty bad. I forgot about them. Getting parts for Mercs and BMWs was a pain. And, if you went to the dealer ..... I the only tolerable automatic transmission I can think of were a few american ones from GM and Ford, but they killed power and gas mileage like no other. I'm sorry, but this car does look awful. Not saying the English always made perfect cars, because we didn't, but there is a reason James Bond drives an Aston Martin and not a 10 ton Cadillac (Not sure if the spelling is correct) American cars are not popular in the UK, i would imagine its the same for English cars in the US, i don't know if Astons, Jaguars and Bentleys are popular in the US.
paypointpal 1 month ago
@paypointpal Of course they aren't, but only because, for the most part, they're extremely expensive. I see alot of old Jaguar XJ8s (alot of people overlook its similarities to a car like this) but I haven't seen an Aston or Bentley in person in a long time.
desertfox2020 4 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 I see a lot of Bentley's, Aston's, original Mini's, Lotus's, Land Rovers.
All those cars here in England.
You could buy an American car in the UK, but you would have to find a specialist dealer and they are always extremely over priced for what they are.
Most people drive Automatics in the US though, no idea why. In the UK we mostly drive Manuals, but you can still buy classic 70's English cars, there are still a lot about.
paypointpal 4 weeks ago
@paypointpal I see quite a few Range Rovers too, forgot about that, and my friend has a brand new Mini. I really don't know why we like manuals over here, we just do... maybe we really are as lazy as we're stereotyped to be.
desertfox2020 4 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Erm. I'm not sure that made sense at the end.?
You said you don't know why the US likes Manuals, maybe we really are as lazy as we are stereotyped to be. Did you mean Automatics, not Manuals.?
paypointpal 4 weeks ago
@paypointpal Yeah that's what I meant, sorry for the typo
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Thats cool. But yeah, Automatics can be fun, if you have a fast car that is.
But i prefer the control i have with a manual.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal I'm a fan of shiftable automatics, so you can drive how you want whenever you want.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah they can be fun.
My sister drives a Semi Auto, Speedgear. You can drive it as a Full Auto, but you can switch it into Manual mode and push back and forth to go through the gears yourself, its great fun for overtaking, it selects 1st on its own when you come to a stop.
Its quite fun, but when you're used to a 6 speed manual like i am, its hard to adjust to back and forth for the gears. lol
My dad had a Auto Jaguar, it had 2nd and 3rd as an option for more power though.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal My friend has a Jetta with one, its fun. I drive a truck (typical American, I know) with a column shift, automatic, which is what I like most of the time. However there's alot of times where I wish I could shift it, especially for over taking, pulling something heavy, and accelerating up hills. I believe newer ones have a +/- button on the end of the lever, but mines too old for that.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Does your Auto truck not have the kick down then.?
Automatics over here have a kick down, so when you push the pedal to the floor it activates the kick down, which basically goes down a gear and gives you more power so you can overtake, like if you changed down to overtake in a Manual.
I find certain Automatics interesting, like Toyota's MMT, multi mode transmission, thats a very interesting take on the semi auto style, i would love to try one out.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal It does actually, I thought all autos did. However it seems that you have to literally stand on the pedal to activate it, its not very sensitive at all. It actually takes some effort to floor it completely. I know this can be adjusted but I don't want to strain the engine unnecessarily by flooring it often. For my truck the more reliable way to quickly overtake is to let off the accelerator, drop a gear via speed loss, and then accelerate as much as you can before it shifts up.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah, i can imagine that must kind of suck.I know someone who just passed there test, and bought a small car, its very slow, the only way of over taking in it, is letting off the accelerator, dropping back, then flooring it to get a run up to overtake.
Its awful, there is no punch at all by dropping it down a gear. A lot of Auto's have a Sport button too, which keeps it in gear for longer before switching up, so you can get more revs and more power. My dads Jag had a sport button
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Yeah, I can do 0-60 in a respectable time for a vehicle its size (8 or 9 seconds) but accelerating to a higher speed from about 50 or 60, it just isn't made to do that and resists you telling it to. My mom has a small Ford, its the equivalent of a pre-2000 Mondeo for you, and its absolutely terrible in every way. It makes my truck feel like a sports car.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Haha. 8 or 9 seconds isn't too bad.
2.3 Turbo Sport, it does 0-60 in just under 5 seconds, i had it tuned, but standard it can do it in 7.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Yeah old cars are often plenty fast, but you never want to go that fast in something that old. I'm not really aware of my truck's top speed and considering its age and that it gets driven almost 500 miles a week (250,000 on it right now) I'm not going to find out.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah i agree with you, anything can go wrong at high speeds, especially if you're driving an older car.
My dad used to drive that far in his van, he had a Ford Transit, he used to get up at 4am to set off to work because it took so long to get there.
He drove so many miles, but he was highly paid so it was worth it for him i guess.
He sold his Transit a few weeks ago, to buy something different, very high mileage on it but it just kept going, never had 1 problem with it.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Yeah, I know alot of people who keep their older cars not because they can't afford new ones, but because their old ones are dependable and will continue to be. I know people with very high mileage fords, jeeps, hondas, dodges... they all can last. How long a car lasts depends more on the driver than the brand. Sure there's some cars that are just junk, but if a car is taken care of and driven sensibly, it can be driven as much as you need to for a very long time with few problems.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah exactly. My dad had a very good car, it was a 1991, never had any problems with it, he decided to buy a 2004 Renault Megane back when they were first introduced, he had nothing but electrical problems with it, never ending, he sold it quickly, and bought his Jaguar, which is a 1989, never had any problems with this.
My dad trained as a mechanic when he was younger, so he does most repairs himself. He looks after his cars, engine, interior, exterior, always look great.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal It's amazing how ignorant people can be sometimes, my friend has a mid size pickup with a custom muffler system and so he enjoys flooring it all over the place, because it sounds cool.... and just today he was complaining that its pinging and he doesn't know why. He redlines it at every chance, and sure it sounds great, until it breaks down. My sister blew the head gasket on a 5 year old Hemi Durango because she floors it all the time, the car had only 70,000 on it.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 And the funny thing is, my brother who is now 23, bought a car about a year ago, it was a good car when he bought it, but he likes to drive fast all the time, last week the head gasket went on it, and hes had a few other problems with it too, all very expensive. He doesn't understand why it has so many problems, yet hes always telling me stories of how he went over a hill so fast he made the car take off, and how he did doughnuts and handbrake turns and what speed he had out of it
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal I wish I had the skills and self confidence to work on my own vehicles. I work on lawnmower engines, but I don't trust myself to work on a car. This has come back to bite me before. Last summer, on the highway, my left rear wheel flew off. 3 of the lugs snapped and 2 were bent. The lug nuts I found were cracked, and all of the brake components and the wheel itself were destroyed. All this because I didn't put on my own tires, and the shop over tightened the lugs on that wheel.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 I don't really know much about engines and stuff like that, i'm not very good with it. My dad knows his stuff, so if i have problems i ask him to look at it for me. lol
I don't trust a lot of garages, i always get the feeling they are over pricing things or they haven't done what they said they have done.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Exactly, I know a guy who I think is pretty trustworthy, but I'm going to start having a friend of mine who definitely knows what hes doing help me in the future. He restored a barely running car on his own and it runs great so I'm sure he can do some small repairs here and there to a perfectly good vehicle.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 That's really good.
The last car we restored was in 2010, it was another Jaguar.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal My friend's a bit of a Ford fanatic... he has an Edge for a family car, an F250 for his work at a steel mill, and the car he restored was a '91 F150 that he got for $500 at a junk yard. It had a bent frame, mismatched color panels, terrible interior quality, and no exhaust system at all. The engine ran, barely. Now, it's a great weekend cruiser, despite the terrible gas mileage (something like 11 mpg on a good day).
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal I tried to buy it off him, but the sense of accomplishment you get for doing something successfully like that is too great, and he'll never get rid of it. I really like the old Jaguars, I've never seen one in person in the states though. My dad used to work with a guy who had one, and he gave him a few rides in it, he said it was so fast on the open highway it was almost scary. It was a convertible, not sure of the model but it was a smaller one.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah, the sense of accomplishment is great. I love it, because you experience different cars, all cars are different, its cheap to buy, and you can re store it in your own time, and then finding the right parts at cheap prices, its really fun.
Jaguars are common in the UK, but mostly new Jaguars, you rarely see the model my dad has. They are very fast, my dads is a 4.0, straight six.
Very powerful car, and such high quality interior.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal I hope to restore a classic car one day, preferably a muscle car, they might not handle well on the track but they're definitely fun cars and sound good. I know someone with a '65 Mustang, its his daily driver, and it looks about as good as I'm sure it did in 1965. I want to have a car I can say that about.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 You can cruise a long at 90mph in my dads Jaguar and it doesn't feel like you're moving, its so smooth, with the power and being an Auto, its so easy to just accelerate from 60 onwards and cruise past people, its very gruff sounding if you accelerate quickly, being a powerful car.
But if you just accelerate gradually you will reach 90 and just glide past people comfortably. Its 1989, but it has electric seats, heated seats, cruise control, all electric windows & on board computer
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Very nice. I will never understand why someone would want a car with a small, hybrid engine, a CVT transmission, 12 second 0-60 times and an exhaust system that makes it completely silent. I want at least 6 cylinders in any case, I want it to be loud, and I want to feel it shift. The Prius may be great on gas but I'd rather not drive than have to put up with the lack of stimuli you'd receive while driving it.

@desertfox2020 I completely agree.
It doesn't make a lot of noise because its a Turbo, it just whistles and whines a bit
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Turbo whine or supercharger whine is just as good as the engine itself being loud in my book. Insurance is stupidly expensive here too when you are in school still, and can't work full time to pay for it. I don't know what it costs to have a car registered as a classic, but I can't imagine the insurance on that is cheap at all.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 Yeah, i love the Turbo whine, especially when you let off the accelerator a bit and it calms down, sounds so nice.
When i bought my first car, the main figure i was interested in was the MPG, because i knew insurance was going to cost so much, i needed to get the most out of what money i would have left after paying insurance every month.
It was a very stressful time to be honest, but i'm so glad my insurance has gone down, now i can look at buying cars and buy whatever i want.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Yeah MPG is killing me, only due to the amount I drive though. I'm just not ready to give up my vehicle despite what it costs to drive it. If I could make a decent amount of money closer to home, I wouldn't care about the price of gas... but I can't.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 I know what you mean. My dads Jaguar does about 17mpg.
Even with my Turbo and it being a fast car, as long as you don't drive it hard, my car returns a decent MPG. Its all very expensive now though, car insurance, yearly road tax, M.O.T's, on top of that you need more money to actually be able to drive your car.
Its stupid. I do quite a bit of driving for my job, its hard because i don't earn a set wage, money can be up then down for me, sometimes i lose money in my work.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal That's got to be really frustrating. I like driving, and would love a job where I could drive alot, but only if I got compensated for gas haha
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 lol. I love driving too, its so much fun.
I don't know if you have heard of Snooker, but its a cue sport like Pool in the US.
Snooker is huge in England, where as in the US Pool is huge.
But yeah, i'm a professional Snooker player, i enter tournements through out the year all over England, Poland, Germany, Brazil and more on the professional circuit, so my car is important, i drive a lot.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Wow. I can understand how gas prices could pile up quickly, all to have you make nothing off all that you spent to get there, if things don't go your way.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 I have to pay £100 entry fee for tournements, if i can reach the last 64 then i get £200, and the prize money goes up and up from then on in the tournement.
There are tournements a few times a few month, but if i don't reach the last 64, then i'v lost my £100 entry fee. The winner of these tournements gets around £10,000 though, much more for the bigger events too, some going up to £300,000.
So yeah, money can be tight, lots of pressure on me winning. I do well though mostly.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Glad to hear you're successful.
desertfox2020 3 weeks ago
@desertfox2020 haha i'm some what successful. lol
I won a tournement in late 2010, that got me about £11,000. I got got to the semi finals etc of a few in 2011 which earnt me a little bit more to keep me going.
I just need to win a big one haha. It can be hard to keep your spirits up when you don't even reach the last 64 though.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal Somewhat is better than not successful at all.

@paypointpal "You could buy an American car in the UK, but you would have to find a specialist dealer and they are always extremely over priced for what they are."
It depends. If you buy the classics, they're very well priced. Parts a cheap as hell if you get them from the US as the £-$ exchange makes them half price, specialist insurance reduces the cost too and the simplicity of the mechanics and community aspect of owning classic US cars in the UK, makes repairs cheap.
v8cool1 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal "and they are always extremely over priced for what they are."
The new ones imported to the UK are aimed at fans, like the Mustangs and Vettes etc, so they will pay a higher price as fans do for things they love. But even so, I don't think they're overly expensive from an importer unlike a main dealership.
v8cool1 3 weeks ago
@v8cool1 I understand the muscle cars, etc.
But i was talking about the US every day cars.
An ordinary car you see on the streets most days in the US, is really over priced in the UK because they are rare here, and to be honest, everyday American cars are not suited for English roads, every day English cars are probably quite small on American roads.
I would pay quite a bit of money for classic muscles cars though, and the cool 1950's cars.
paypointpal 3 weeks ago
@paypointpal But we don't really get the everyday american cars here except for chrysler. But £23k for a 300, a full sized fully loaded car isn't bad.
v8cool1 3 weeks ago
@v8cool1 I know, that's my point, we don't really get them here, so when you do see any for sale they are over priced.
Although i never liked Chrysler's, so 23k is 23k too much for me.

@xPyroxx A boat with wheels is still called a car. Heard of an amphicar?

@v8cool1 >A boat with wheels is still called a car

Wait, what? Thats a bit contradicting isn't it? A boat with wheels is an amphicar, not a car.
But besides, I'd hate to have to use an amphicar to drive around doing menial task and parking.
xPyroxx 1 month ago
@xPyroxx An amphicar is still a car ..hence the word 'car' on the end. The same way a sea plane is still a plane.
I think an amphicar would be quite fun though. Stuck in traffic for an hour whilst they fix that road bridge over the river?? Well, cross the river yourself T'daaaa.
No parking spaces in the city? Well you can moor your car instead .
v8cool1 1 month ago
@DTerminatorII so you're saying you can't design a good car?
Digdigs2 1 month ago
Man I tell you...you freakin Europeans worry about only 1 thing.... how to TRY to make Americans look inferior. The whole purpose of cars of that caliber was luxury....not performance. Mind you this is a late 1970's car. What level of cars did the UK make in those days? As you all would say....RUBBISH. 80% of your car makers dont even exist anymore because they were so horrible. So just be clear, dont throw stones in a glass house...look at yourself rather than look at other countries (USA)
DTerminatorII 1 month ago
@DTerminatorII Just because our country made bad cars doesn't mean we can't make fun of the equally bad cars of other countries. At least we had the decency to stop offering terrible cars to the general public

@Digdigs2 nah, mostly just aggressive
DeanoTXR53 1 month ago
@DTerminatorII
