Except Nirvana is the greatest fucking rock and roll band to come along for years. Nirvana WAS bigger than the entire universe, because of theri emotion. Other alternative bands may have been technically alternative (mumbled lyrics, distorted guitar, covered melodies etc.) but NO BAND... NO BAND had the emotion of Nirvana. just watch the MTV unplugged, once you strip away all the distortion covering thier songs, or any song they choose to cover, its beautiful, flawless emotion.
