  • Captain Smith did the right thing when it comes to steering the ship further to the south. But still he shouldn't have had his right hand turn until the ship was about as far south as the state of Florida. There is one thing you do when you approach an icefield like that. If you can't slow your ship down enough to make it safely through, then you get away from the icefield by steering your ship to the south. But DO NOT EVER increase your speed on the ocean!!!

  • did you guys know to actual ship they filmed this on was the queen mary, i went there last summer and it was awesome

  • Weird how they say that the triple screw config is to blame for the slow ROT, I'd say it was rather the fact that they reversed the engines and the under sized rudder. As they took away the flow of water over the rudder by reversing, they minimized the effectiveness of the rudder. This is true for modern day ships as well. They could have turned hard to port, reversing the port prop and letting the stb prop and the middle prop going ahead, that would have been a better way to turn...

  • @RocketFisk Yes, going full ahead on the starboard engine and full astern on the port one, while keeping the helm hard over, may have averted the collision. Of course, Smith knew exactly where the ice field was and when he'd be in it. He mistakenly believed he'd be able to see any iceberg big enough to sink the ship in time to avoid it. I agree on the triple-screw design; there was nothing wrong with it, even though a 4-screw layout like the Mauretania's was indeed better.

  • another thing... The "witness" who "overheard" ismay claim to beat Olympic's record.

Miss Elizabeth Lines, was not sure in cross examination at the limited liability hearings if it was The Captain Ismay was talking to. She Knew it was Ismay who did the talking. But wasn't as sure if he was in fact talking to Smith or just some other "elderly Gentleman"

  • 64 Lifeboats would have been nice True!!! However, with the absence of lifeboat drills it would not have mattered as they barely managed to lower the 16 boats they had as it was.

  • @TitanicApril10151912 If you know how to launch lifeboats it will go faster and if people are aware the ship is sinking they will want to go into them. There had been 20 lifeboats on board the Titanic. They didn't even get the people they could have gotten, time wasn't a factor at first, the lifeboats didn't go in the water fast because people thought the ship was safer. The Titanic had lifeboat space for 1100 people. 705 where saved from the ship.

  • @WTCLover There was 18 life boats. 16 regular, and 2 collapsable. And people thought the ship was safer, because they were all told that it was just regulation and that they would be back on the ship by breakfast. But the people on 3rd class, the men and women were sent by crew members towards the back of the ship, leaving more time for the 1st class to be saved beforehand. most 3rd class were just a few decks below. in one boat alone. out of the 12 on it only 2 were women.

  • @maestro790 Also there was only one life boat full to it's max capacity, 8 children being among the 60 odd people in that boat the only reason that became full is because it was one of the last to be sent down and only one that stayed. The rest rowed a quarter mile away from the wreck as not to be taken under by the masses., and one of the colapsable boats was found drifting, with only 3 bodies and that was due to lack of time. Orders were not followed and that is why so many died. as well as..

  • @maestro790 Lack of life boats.

  • yaaf? what is she talking about? I can't find any information on the Frankfurt and its communications with Titanic. Can someone help me out?

  • @KayBeeEee1983 The Frankfurt was the first ship to respond to Phillips' CQD. The Frankfurt's operator, after consulting his captain, keyed "What is the matter?" This irritated Phillips, who keyed back "YAAF" for "you are a fool." This may have been part of a known rivalry between Marconi and Telefunken, who built wireless sets for ships. If the Frankfurt operator had had a Marconi set like the Titanic, Phillips may not have given an insulting rebuke. Frankfurt was a Telefunken ship.

  • @galoon Why would the question "What's the matter?" irritate him? I doubt he would care what type of wireless the other ship was using when his own ship was sinking. None of that seems right.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 His question was actually "What is the matter with you?" meaning what's wrong with the ship. I'm not sure why it irritated Phillips, but it obviously did. At the US inquiry, Senator W.A. Smith asked Harold Bride, the Titanic's surviving operator "do you think the operator understood he was a fool?" Bride's reply was "No, I think we keyed it too fast for him." So these operators were encouraged by their employers to actively carry out this rivalry between wireless companies.

  • @galoon Are you sure that wasn't before they hit the iceberg? I thought I remember hearing somewhere that something like that happened while the wireless operators were sending passenger messages.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 Yes. The incident you're referring to is the exchange between Titanic and Californian just before the collision. Cyril Evans, the Californian's operator, was ordered to warn Titanic that she'd stopped due to the ice. Evans wired "I say, Old Man, we're stopped and surrounded by ice." Phillips, feverishly dealing with a backlog of passenger messages due to the set breaking down earlier, replied "Shut up, shut up; I'm busy. I'm working Cape Race and you're jamming me." (con't)

  • @KayBeeEee1983 (con't) The thing here is that Evans hadn't preceded his message with the letters "MS" which stands for Master Service Message. That prefix means that this is navigation-related and the recipient HAS to pass it along to his captain. So without that prefix, Evans' message sounded to Phillips like mere operator-to-operator chitchat which was why he ignored it. With the MS prefix, Phillips would have been required to take it down and pass it to the Titanic's bridge.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 Correction: the prefix was "MSG" meaning Master Service Gram.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 It must be remembered that at the time the Frankfurt replied, neither Phillips nor Bride realized the ship was really going to sink. So they didn't yet grasp the gravity of the situation. Believe it or not, they did care about company affiliation. The operators weren't employed by the shipping lines at the time; they were employed by the radio companies, which is also why passenger messages took precedence over navigational ones; amazing, but true. That changed after the Titanic.

  • @KayBeeEee1983 This was covered in the 1912 Senate inquiry into the disaster. All the testimony and transcripts of it are available online for free, I believe. Interestingly, the Titanic's sister ship RMS Olympic (also Marconi-equipped) asked an equally stupid question: "Are you steering southerly to meet us?" and Phillips politely replied "We are putting the women off in the boats." As it turned out, the Frankfurt was 170 miles away; too far to reach Titanic in time.

  • 3:35 That Music is awesome than film in 1997,

The Massage from the Californian at 10:55 is sand it to the titanic to give warn of Ice and The Titanic is telling The Californian to Shut Up. That's why, The Titanic has been Hit An Iceberg.

  • lol @ 1.22

  • I believe that if Titanic was built after the introduction of SS Normandie (either 9 or 10 years), White Star could have had a design that made her stronger, less expensive to operate & different results than the infamous resutls.

  • what the hell did Cap. Smith care if it was his last voyage. He could have told Ishmael to go to hell. This part is a grey area.

  • @germaniajim according to the 1997 film, if titanic reached new york early, it would have been a record for the captain to end hes career in that way. too bad it dident happen.

  • that is really the best music than a film.

  • There is no evidence whatsoever that Ismay was giving orders to the ship's crew to go faster. It was standard practice for passenger ships to sail across the Atlantic at high speeds, reaching their destination on time being the top priority.

  • @FlaviusConstantius Traditionally, westbound mail steamers of any type did not slow down for ice. The ship in the vicinity which had stopped was the Leyland Line's "Californian" - a cargo vessel, not a mail steamer. The problem with this documentary is that it is judging the actions of Titanic's crew by modern standards - the standards that were set as a reaction to the disaster.

  • 3:35 that is awesome music

  • 3:05 The revolutionary, unsinkable design should have excluded iron!

  • omg! 5:22 he says titanic 1,300 passengers! there was 1.500 passengers! MASSIVE MISTAKE!

  • @clctitanic no he was right,

around 2200 people on board and there were over 860 crew members,

  • @celtagas 860 crew members seems ridiculous. Thats like a crew member for every 3 passengers

  • @tanrat7 hmm, but its a big ship, plus that includes, chefs, stweards, waiters everything.

  • @tanrat7 Also, Titanic was only carrying around 2/3rds of her "normal" passenger complement - mercifully.

  • @tanrat7 Some modern ships have many more then 860 crew members.

  • If you do your reseach, you will fine and conclude, If you mock God...he will react. I dont attend church like I should and I dont talk much about such things but if you search you will fine this to be true. It happen to John Lennon. On one is his intervews, he did just that. NO KIDDING...do your research.

  • The reason that there were 16 lifeboats was because of antiquated maritime regulations. The white star line wasn't required to have any more than 16, so if you meet the requirements, why go beyond that? The olympic class was already "practically unsinkable," and regulations say we only need 16 lifeboats, so why don't we just slap on 4 extras and call it a day?

  • @veronicafan2000 However wasn't there 2 of the collapsibles on the roof one thing White Star could have done was put more collapsbile on the roofs where passengers are not aloud passengers may not notice and then you still have the entire deck not cluttered with boats instead the roof is
