  • When it comes to the question of which accent, did you noticed, that in Hogfather movie, the head of assassin guilt is offered 3mil of dollars, not pounds? 0:)

  • In what part of england do people speak in small caps? :)

  • Well personally, as I am english and as is terry pratchett, i would think of death with an english accent. However, the whole idea of Discworld isnt even on earth. SO i dont think its accent specific. This script is performed worldwide, so accents and languages cant really be that much of an issue? i mean if your Italian and love terry pratchett, it would be shit to go an see mort in english. Im currently performing this with a small youth theatre and I think u did a great job.

  • Oh yeah - and as for what part of england Death comes from? It's Norwich.

  • Most amusing... If you ever want to do an English accent, then I am an English voiceover artist. I wuld happily record and download/upload/whatever a script for you... I can do a variety of accents, or RP (recieved pronunciation - what is usually considered a 'correct' english accent without regional variations)

  • The original was already great, I just wish the audio quality was as audible as this one. The static in the background from the first video was kinda annoying, and I couldn't understand what Death was saying at some parts because of some echos, too...

    THIS video = LOL! xDD

  • love take 2,3 and 8

    burst out laughing there

  • Even though I did like the accent Death had- I still prefer the accent Death has when he is played by Christopher Lee.

Although now I just have ask while I'm doing this: do any Americans believe in the stereotype that everyone in Britain either lives in a castle and has a posh accent or in some mock-Tudor cottage and takes tea with Miss Marple everyday? I don't mean to be rude but it seems that every American TV show I've seen e.g. Friends, Ugly Betty, Scrubs, ect follows this stereotype.

  • Allow me, an American to answer, if you will.

First off, I love Terry Pratchett's work, and that's from only reading the Bromeliad Trilogy and Thud!. Some Americans feel this way, but a lot feel this way 'cause we keep hearing anti-American rants from Europe. I'm not saying everyone in Europe hates America (Hell, most of the time I do), but It's our perception. And I've met British people before, and they were extraordinarily fun to be around.

  • Some do. Ignorant folks who don't have any exposure to British culture do tend to base their assumptions on what they see on TV. Those of us who've seen a lot of Monty Python and Eddie Izzard know you're also all transvestites too. *grin*

  • "Touch my monkey!" lol

    xD take 7...

And take 2 is my favorite! It sounds like the Nac Mac Feegles with a microphone.

  • ok fine if death sounded like coach Z I'd probably go past death happier as I do expect death to be just a lightswitch flip alive dead light dark something nothing.

  • I liked the original. God and death aren't english but universal.

  • haha! brilliant :D

While I do love this video and the video it's a response to, I just think that Terry Pratchett's novels are at their absolute best in writing.

  • I agree completely. Pratchett is far and away my favorite author.

  • I think a lot of people might be comparing it to Ian Richardson's accent (he did the voice of Death in a couple of the films)

I didn't notice anything about the accent, all I was thinking was that it should have been deeper.

  • "What part of England is Death from?"

Hahaha, well said! Very good point. I agree that the English accent is totally unnecessary. American productions usually should have American accents, unless they're very, very good at doing British accents.

Now, if Death had had a Southern drawl, then I MIGHT have has some issues. Such as it is, you're okay. :)

  • Surelt death wouldn't have an accent, wouldn't it be just words (i seem to remember his voice being described as the sounds of coffin doors closing)

  • Don't do british, do English! The scottish and Irish really don't work... If Death is english, he's upercalss. Not snooty with extra h's in front of w's, just, posh. ish.

But personally I thought they oringinal was great :D x

  • Well said!

Personally, I loved the performance, and the accents rather blended into the background for me. But even so, does it matter? I realise that people assume that English author = English accents, but Death isn't supposed to have an accent of /any/ kind, is he?

So stop nit-picking - I'd like to see some of the people complaining get up there and do it themselves. Honestly, job well done, never change.

  • LOL Love it! Had to do an American accent for a play once, t'was hard to keep up! But I like the accents on this, you guys did well. I think people like the English accent because Discworld was written in England by an English author (and takes the mick out of a load of English concepts) but I think it's get how far spread the books are.

  • I enjoyed the original sketch, and agree with other posters that a British accent isn't required. If the production were taking place in England, then yes, I'd pretty much expect it. But in most cases, Americans attempting to do a British accent don't pull it off effectively (except in the case of James Marsters on Buffy; that's just impressive), and I don't think it'd improve things. I quite liked the original treatment of Death's voice, really. :-)

  • I agree. Yanks and Brits just don't do each other's accents very well at all. For every good imitation (and here I'm thinking Bob Hoskins in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"), there are a dozen bad ones (and here I'm thinking pretty much every American accent every attempted by the Pythons).

That said, we *did* have a few actors try English accents. As the director, I encouraged this, if only to challenge the cast a bit. Death just wasn't one of the ones who was willing to try. *grin*

  • Loved the Death's job interview sketch that you did - i really don't think it matters that accent isn't english. As you say, what part of england does death come from? Death's been around all sorts of people so he'll have had varying influences on his accent, and anyway who's to say Discworld accents are completely english? Follow up video was a gem - made me laugh out loud. If you do anymore productions don't try and change your accents - there's no need. Great work.

  • realy good sketch allready but try a very posh british accent. in fact ENGLISH axent like monty python or somthing thankyou from one english to one american good luck!

  • I don't think you have to change anything, guys.

  • Oh, definitely. But if people are gonna be snarky about it, I'll snark right back. *grin*

  • People are always sharky. Just have fun. It seems you are doing well enough. If they get *too spicy* in their comments, just ignore them. Be patient. They just want to be listened.

  • So far, liking the San Fernando one best. Think you should do a total reshoot using that voice. Call it the Valley of Death.

  • I love it! Maybe we can get Alicia Silverstone for it. I hear she's looking for work . . . .
