The effect of alcohol depends on the person and genetics...most of my family drink hard for 30-40 years and die at 85. However it does ruin peoples lives in many other ways.
He was possibly the best player ever to dribble a football but he couldn't take the pressure, yet he still leaves many great memories in those who saw him play (I'm only 23 so I can't comment there sadly). If alive he would be the same age as my dad is today (65). That is a sobering thought.

The criteria for liver transplant for non celebs is at least 2 years abstinent. My father has been dry for 5 years now, has the commonest blood group and has spent 3 years on the waiting list, 1 as "urgent". Please don't spread false information or make the ridiculous assertion that George Best met any criteria and wasn't bumped to the top of the list because he's famous. Best made a mockery of the transplant system and his donor in his usual selfish manner, & no amount of talent belies that.

II never, at any point, said that the bottle chose George Best. He had an addiction, he tried it, liked it but got addicted. He didn't set out to be an alcoholic. It was something that he felt is body just couldn't do without. It's not a narcissists disease, it's a fuckin ADDICTION! The logic of my statement is that he lived life the way he wanted, and nobody's perfect, far from it. If you played, looked, were as rich as, famous as George Best and had the media breathing down your neck and winding you up constantly, it would be difficult not to fall at least partially for some vice as a coping mechanism. Bottom line is, it was his life not yours, and a higher power will judge him, not you.

To say anyone who 'becomes' an alchoholic is an idiot, is an idiot themselves! Some alchoholics get through it and stay sober, but it's rare in general, it's a disease and something you're born with. It's like an allergy, you eat eg: shellfish, are allergic, and come out in a rash. It's the same for someone who's alchohol dependent, only once they have a drink, the chemical and phycological response is to need another drink.

yeaterday, i watched "best:his mother's son" and it was sooo sad!! he had soo much potential and yet he retired at 27!! i think george messed it up by himself altho, he missed trainin sessions, missed matches and had gotten himself suspended bt i do feel sorry 4 him!! the way they showed the ending - so sad!
